We've participated in jams lots of times but most of them were the LDJAM. It uses a karma system (kinda like this one) where if you rate other's game, you get karma, so you appear first in the game list.
But here, although there is a "sort by karma" option, it doesn't seem very useful? we've played and rated (and gave feedback on most) near 30 games, but doesn't seem to affect anything and we've got only 14 ratings. Every time i look, there are games with 50+ ratings on top. How do they have so much karma?
In any case, doesn't seem to have any impact because i think most people just go by the random sorting or, like me, use the "rating x rating system".
