Spotlight uses a shader that swaps the colors of sprites under it, so they remain visible. Still only ever 2 colors.

My favorite so far. Great submission!

Developer

Thanks! I'm stoked it's your favorite. What's your high score?

Very clean and well made arcade game! The difficulty ramps up greatly once the ships start spawning all over the place instead of in neat little rows in thirds of the screen. This makes the gameplay much more dynamic than I had thought originally. I kind of wonder how hellish diagonally moving enemies would end up being haha.

I like the idea of the spotlight. I never ended up avoiding it since it spawns a lot of consistent enemies which racks up score a lot easier and safer than the haphazard regular ones. I wonder if the risk vs reward should or could increase as a run progresses with spotlight enemies spawning differently or moving trickier.

Great job overall!

Thank you for the detailed feedback, I'm glad you liked it. Indeed the spotlight is meant to be used to rack up points, but the more time you spend in the game and the more ships come, the harder it is to use the spotlight, as too many ships will make it challenging to stay alive.

Quite an interesting single button sh'mup.  It's hard to do a single button game well, but I think you got something here. Good job.

Thank you! I think the concept had already been validated by my source of inspiration. I just had to make it work for a 64x64 screen size :)

I liked the unique playstyle where when you shoot the ship changes directions!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I like it too, and was looking for an opportunity to implement it in a game.

Quite and original game, specially how the spaceship is controlled. It's challenging, but entertaining, I enjoyed it!

Glad you had fun. Thank you!

A great retro game! Loved the classic vibes :D

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Old-school simple retro is what I was going for and I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I want this game on my phone 😅

Developer

It actually works on well on phones using the browser. But I know what you mean. I'll consider doing an Android build.

Simple concept, very enjoyable !

It's quiet hard but the control are reactive :)

Well done !

Thank you, happy you liked it!

Original idea and great implementation :)

Was kinda hard at the beginning but i ended up playing a few more rounds, top score 18!

Developer

Thanks! Glad you liked it. It's actually based on a much more difficult game with the same control scheme, Switch 'n' Shoot

Simple and interesting.

Thank you!

Interesting concept. I feel the speed of the ship moving up/down on click is a wee bit too fast, but otherwise it's pretty fun!

Developer

Thank you! It's inspired by a game I saw at the National Videogames Museum in Sheffield, UK, but I can't find it anywhere and can't remember the name. That one was much harder. All ships were smaller and much faster (yours and the enemies). Could barely get 6-7 points :))

Very nice game and you have covered the themes of the 2 game jams perfectly.

Developer

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed.

This game was made in the span of 2 days covering two different game jams: LOWREZJAM 2023 and 1-BIT JAM.

For LOWREZJAME 2023 the game runs at an internal resolution of 64x64 pixels and the chosen theme is "Invasion" (hence the infinite wave of enemy planes to destroy).

For 1-BIT JAM the game uses only 2 colors: black and white. The theme is "Light & Dark", and is implemented by the use of the spotlight, which you're meant to avoid... or not :)
