I'm not sure whether this is meant to be an action-rpg or a walkathon. It felt like it had aspects of both. I did like collecting the light lotuses to power up, but I was confused about the dragons. They didn't seem to be much of a threat, and there was no way to really disable or damage them? I did like the art, though.

I know you said you ran out of time for sound but sound is vitally important! Next time, make sure you set aside a designated time for sound design as I would argue it is just as important as gameplay and visuals.

Thanks for creating!

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed finding the lotuses!

Well it's supposed to be a stealth-action game with some elements such as the lotuses which are basically a combo of pieces of heart and magic upgrades from Zelda. and yes the dragons can be temporarily disabled by hitting them 3 times if they've seen you or the light you shed recently, or once if you sneak around their detection radius and hit them before they caught a whiff of you.

This game was really great!

Developer

I'm glad you liked the game

Fell free to also give mine a try, it just got updated.

It's cool, but damn it, I expected that there would be more various mechanics at the game jam

Developer

Thanks for playing.

Though, to be fair, when the theme is "Light and Dark", there's a strong direction people will tend to go, while there's still plenty of ways to go, people will generally gravitate to just a few, and I'll admit I went to one of the more literal and common interpretations.

The intense darkness, powerful dragons, and fast-burning light all lend themselves to an incredibly oppressive atmosphere. You really feel like any moment can be your last, desperately scrounging around for keys and lotus, hoping the dragons don't spot you. This feeling makes the final fight all the better, where you finally get to turn the tables on the dragons.

There are a few things I think would improve the game. Stunning the dragons should disable their hurtbox so you can walk past them directly. Dragons probably shouldn't be able to follow you to the next screen, so some bounds would be nice. I lost a run due to transitioning screens directly into a fireball, so something to prevent that would help.

Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed that final fight!

I'll admit though, there was more than a few bugs relating to why those didn't happen (the dragons not deactivating once off screen, or during a screen transition), they would disappear or fail to reactivate when resetting their initial position and alert level and I wasn't able to fix it in time while also making the game completable. Unfortunately, I don't really have time to go back right now.

Really enjoyable game! I think it maybe could have benefitted from being a tad easier at least in the beginning but other than that I had a lot of fun!

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you had fun.

Though I didn't think the beginning was too hard (supposing a certain thing doesn't happen), what was your experience?

Submitted(+1)

Upon initially picking up the game I didn't know what exactly the end goal or win condition was so I just kept dying to the beginning dragon because I didn't know what I was supposed to do. I initially did get it, but I wish there was leeway in the early game to allow players to figure things out without the pressure of constantly dying, cuz I found in my experience that players tend to bash their heads into a wall (metaphorically speaking) when faced with a seemingly impassable wall meaning they'll just keep trying the same thing over and over and over again instead of rethinking their strategy

Good game! We with so music and some feedback from the dragons the game will improve. Really interesting ideia about the theme.

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you liked the game!

Such a marvelous little game! I don't think I need to say anything about the missing music, etc, instead I will focus on the things I loved! The theme, a very nice take on it, to turn it into a fantasy story like this. I like how it felt like an OG Zelda without too much explanation. You get the exposition in the first screen, and then off you go to fight the dragon and their minions!

The graphics were my favorite, it feels like a lot time was put into this, all of the details are perfectly puzzled together.

One tiny thing: It would have been nice if your hits on the enemies made them burn for a while, so that you could see a bit clearer. Not too much, of course.

Well done!

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Zelda is indeed a major inspiration for me (and what I was thinking of when I made the screen transitions and put in the gates and keys), though I will admit I was thinking more of the old Atari game Adventure when I started this particular game, but it did shift a lot to Zelda as development went on, and I would look to Final Fantasy and Zoda's Revenge when working on the sprites and tiles.

I really like the graphics. It reminds me of the old ZX Spectrum games. Good use of theme.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked the game.

The game is very fun, I really liked the concept and the gameplay. From my point of view, the theme was used in a very creative way. I don't understand much English, but I was able to understand how the game works. With some music, sound effects, and more feedback on how many dragons we hit, the gameplay will improve a lot. Congratulations on the project, it truly is a great game!

Developer

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the game.

Interesting idea to perform the theme, great!

Developer

Thank you, I'm glad you liked it.

I like the graphics and the use of light, with its tradeoffs. Game does need more polish like some feedback when you hit the dragon. And of course, sound and music :)

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you liked it. Yeah it does need some work (especially with the dragons), I'm hoping to work some more once I have the time, maybe add some more content too.

Submitted(+1)

The game is enjoyable and you have a good idea ! It would be better with sound to enhance the atmosphere !

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

And I agree sound is something I plan on implementing in the future. (but it may be awhile)

Submitted(+1)

I realy like a light effect and game atmosphere. You created a cool game! This game need only music, I'm waiting for update.

Developer

Thank you!

I'll admit it might be a bit before I update, I joined another jam already, but I do plan on coming back to and updating Against Eternal Night a bit once that's over.

Submitted(+1)

Love the mechanics and the graphics! I think with a bit more of polishing and some music and sound effects this would be an amazing game! Hope to see more from it in the future! Great job!

Developer(+1)

Glad you liked it!

I think this is a game that, with a little more polish, could be really solid. Like many others said, the complete silence is pretty jarring, and some music and sfx would add a lot. Other than that, the core mechanic of using your light source as an attack is pretty neat. I do wish that it wasn't quite so costly to fight the dragons though; it takes pretty much the entire un-upgraded light bar to stun a single dragon. Since the whole game is about looking for keys and that's impossible without light, it feels a little frustrating to lose all my light because I wanted to fight one enemy. It would also be nice to have some checkpoints; getting most of the way through the game only to die in a single hit from a dragon is pretty disappointing. This is a very workable game concept though, and I think if you could resolve these issues then this would be a very enjoyable!

Developer(+1)

I'll admit I didn't give myself enough time to really code and debug and sound got cut for it, and it's still far from perfect on the code front. Several of the problems you mention are actually from this, you're actually supposed to have 2 HP that comes back when you get back to a light, and gets upgraded with the light bar. And I did consider check points but an issue with the dragons made the work a little harder than I thought was reasonable in the timeframe I had.

Thanks for your input! It's really good.

Nice game, loved the graphic and the atmosphere! I agree that some music would have gone a long way but the mechanics are neat and I really liked the graphics! The dragon was totally worth it :D

Developer

Glad you liked the game, and the dragons!

Sorry about the music, I spent too much time on everything else.

Submitted(+1)

the game was cool! but I didnt found any option to enable sound overall game is great good work!

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it! Sorry there's no sound, I ran out of time for that.

Submitted(+1)

Jumped on my sit on the first enemy. Nice pixel art! With some musics and sound queues for attacks, it would improve a lot!

Developer

Glad you enjoyed the art, unfortunately sound had to be cut for time, I really wanted to get them in too.

The atmosphere is great! Reminds me of good old Zelda games <3

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Really neat entry! Love the atmosphere of the game. I'm not sure if its just me, but I couldn't hear any audio :(.

Developer

I'm glad you liked the atmosphere!

Sorry about the audio, I ran out of time for that. those dragons demanded a bit more debugging than I was planning for, and I spent way too much time on the graphics and the shape of the map. (Believe it or not, most of the coding happened in the last 3 days!)
