I think having torrent or FTP links for games, make them more accessible & ease the process of downloading games.
Is it possible to add torrent or FTP download link for games on itch?
> That would only make sense for some of the games hosted here
Yeap, I'm talking about games that hosted here.
> and less security
Why is it less secure?! I don't get it. Torrent is being used in so many places as a secure & convenient way of sharing. For example. So many Linux distros have torrent mirrors.
> how would it make games more accessible?
1- It gives gamers more choices for downloading games.
2- So many people don't know about itch & its large collection of games. But those people r more familiar with torrent websites. When they could search & download games (hosted by itch), through torrent, It could help the itch to became more popular among gamers, Bcuz it acts as a smart advertisement for itch too. (& also for game developers)
I think the monthly collection of newly added games to itch, as a torrent, could be the best choice. For example:
Itch.io-games-collection-september-2020.torrent
Itch.io-games-collection-october-2020.torrent
...
That would only make sense for some of the games hosted here
Yeap, I’m talking about games that hosted here.
I believe (and they can correct me if I’m wrong) what No Time To Play meant was that torrent or FTP only made sense for a few of the games - as opposed to all of them.
I think the monthly collection of newly added games to itch, as a torrent, could be the best choice.
Not that I would have any interest in such a collection personally, but if I had, and I wanted to use something other than a collection on itch to see the entirety of a month’s releases… in an unfiltered list… regardless of genre, price, engine, state of development, etc. I would opt for rss as “the best choice”. You like torrents, and that is fine. But they would require users to install and use another bit of software that they don’t necessarily already know how to operate. An .rss file on the other hand could even be viewed with Firefox 3.0 and would be way more accessible.

Linux distros are open source and don't ask for payment upfront. Most of the games here aren't like that. See also what Wechenbetelly said. But I meant FTP is insecure, not BitTorrent. You also asked about FTP.
> torrent or FTP only made sense for a few of the games - as opposed to all of them.
Please tell me the reason of this.
> require users to install and use another bit of software that they don’t necessarily already know how to operate.
What r u talking about? People (around the world) knows better about torrent clients, than itch client.
Thats one of the reasons that I request this suggestion. To make people (That knows torrent but not itch) to get familiar with itch too.
> Most of the games here aren't like that.
Most games on itch r not free? (ಠ.ಠ)
People (around the world) knows better about torrent clients, than itch client.
While that might be true, I personally am using neither. I am using a browser and it works fine for me. Don’t get me wrong: I’m sure that itch.io’s client is great, but with the way I download, archive and document my gaming collection, a browser is what works best for me right now.
As an aside: In my personal experience the “people around the world” are generally pretty helpless when it comes to computers - even “the younger generation(s)”. When you say “torrent” they either hear “piracy and horse ####” or they won’t know what you meant in the first place.
Buuut: As I am always ready to change my opinion and if you stand firm for what you believe in (, until and unless experience proves you wrong) I would like to hear you out if you are that invested in the idea… Maybe there is something I am not seeing just yet. If you explained your initial idea in greater detail and also made some comparisons, maybe it would become more clear how such an addition would improve itch.io enough to warrant the time and work needed for properly implementing it as well as the complaints to the forum and the support when it turns out that nobody is seeding older releases. (Just to be clear: This is just about the BitTorrent bit; not the FTP bit.)
Pictures of mock up interfaces and such are also more than welcome if you think they would help your presentation.

I'm an experienced PC gamer. I played so many games in my life, & I was/am the user of so many gaming communities. Unfortunately, people r not very familiar with indie games of great indie stores (like itch); So those indie games r getting forgotten through time; And its a sad story. I don't want this happens. I just want more gamers to come & try indie games, & then support the talented developers behind those innovative games.
Using torrent for downloading, is a great way to prevent this sad story, & I believe that It could help those indie games & their developers to became more popular.
Most games on Itch accept payment. For most of them it's optional, but they do accept payment. Creators like to be paid. They can use the money. And you can't ask for money over BitTorrent or FTP.Don't worry. When people download games through torrents named (itch) & try & liked those games, they come to itch to thanks, donate & even try other games (free & paid) of the same developer. Its a free advertisement; Its a win-win for all. Its an opportunity that could increase the users of itch.
That was a nice read, but you jumped from (I’m paraphrasing here) “Indie games are great and more people should play it.” to (again: paraphrasing) “If you offered torrents, people who did not know this site before would come here and use itch to buy indie games (or at least donate to their developers).” What I’m missing here is the middle bit.
As an aside (and I hope No Time To Play doesn’t mind me butting in on their part of the conversation - again): My experience is that the vast majority of people who got a free game through a source that wasn’t in some way, shape, or form connected to a platform are content with having gotten a free game. They won’t go out of their way to thank a developer - let alone offer to donate.
Most people are ignorant. Otherwise EA and friends would have had to change their business practices to avoid going bankrupt several years ago.
This comment really confuses me and I really don’t understand what’s your position.

Are you suggesting Itch to allow paid games to be downloaded for free? I’m not sure you are aware of what you are asking here. If I could pay my bills with “free advertisement” I would.

No, No. U get me wrong.
I suggest this idea only for free games (not for paid games); Bcuz most of the games that available on itch, are free.

I don't know what u r missing here!
People download torrent, play free games, get in love with some of those free games, come back to itch to thank or donate game developers, Find other games of the same developers, & play those other games or even buy them. [Its a great marketing for itch!]

Sorry, I think u r wrong.
I'v seen so many people that do this sport & believe in this marketing idea.
Most people are ignorant. Otherwise EA and friends would have had to change their business practices to avoid going bankrupt several years ago.
U mentioned a good example. Why do u think a company like EA with obvious pathetic business practices, still sell good? Its all bcuz of good advertising & good marketing.
I suggest this torrent idea as a smart advertising, to improve the marketing business of itch.

If I may… When users filter for “Free” games, they get shown two kinds of games:
Games that kindly refuse any sort of donation for their work. These are in turn hosted by itch.io without asking the dev or the downloader for any money - despite the fact that such items contribute to the 35,000+ $ US per month that hosting costs them. That cost is independent from the number of downloads or sales. (This is not an exact number but rather based on speculation, rumors and other such estimations.)
Games that remind the downloader that they would prefer for a kind donation of a specifically stated amount of money, but will allow a download for free if the downloader feels entitled to it for any reason. Like just wanting to check if the keys are rebindable and if the localization is any good… Or being financially stable enough to own a internet-capable device for their sole source of entertainment but having to double-check their expenses at the supermarket before they get into an awkward situation at the checkout… Or simply because they feel entitled. But no matter what applies to them, they have now been informed how much the artist (who is most likely doing this as well as working a day job) would say their game is worth at the least and had the option to give them that money after only having seen the words and screenshots at the page. You know… Like every other game that they would have to pay for up front.
One of these categories is not like the other… I know we often say “Free game” because it’s easier to say, but most of us are acutely aware that there is a difference. Which you do not appear to know when you claim “Bcuz most of the games that available on itch, are free”.
And just so you don’t jump to conclusions: I’m not mad or angry, but I feel the need to point this out.
I don’t know what u r missing here!

What I’m missing is your explanation why you think having torrents as an alternative option to download the few games, that are neither age restricted nor accept donations, would be a big marketing move for itch - or anyone else for that matter.
I could replace “People download torrent” with “People download games directly” in your post and the situation you described would be the current situation. Like I said before: At no point in this thread did you point out the relation between Point A (having torrents) and Point C (“Profit!”). There are also a lot of other logistical issues, like the aforementioned age restrictions (and some newer developers maybe not tagging their games appropriately), version updates, getting all of the affected developer’s consent…
Let’s try this:
Suzy Strawman (age 12, Capricorn, USA) is very tech-savvy and wants to play a free, independently developed game that’s age appropriate - but “a good one”. As a tech-savvy person, she’s looking for a platformer with X-Box controller support, with a user-rating of 4/5 or higher (because that’s the new 2.5/5 now), that maybe has pink in the screenshots (because I happen to like pink), with a female protagonist, and that doesn’t run on Unity. (Because her friend Melissa from school said they have opt-out telemetry that isn’t even opt-out for many games and that John Riccitiello is a former Electronic Arts CEO.)
So where does miss Strawman go from here and how is her situation improved by your torrent idea in contrast to the current situation.
One of these categories is not like the other… I know we often say “Free game” because it’s easier to say, but most of us are acutely aware that there is a difference.
I don't see any difference in these two. They r both free, & can be torrented.
nor accept donations,
I already said. Donations will be paid after playing games. And I'm sure, most people gives donation, after playing games. Why someone should pay a donation for a game that not played it yet?! LOL
This is the correct way:
U play a game -> U like the game -> U pay the donation
the aforementioned age restrictions
Again, U want to make a huge disaster out of a small situation, that has a simple solution:
For "age restricted" games, we just add a "18+" phrase, in the game's name (inside the torrent collection).
for example:
games-name-18+.itch.io.exe
Dear raya2.
I am taking into account the possibility that I might be making a mistake in the judgement of your character. So I will let you know that I will not be responding to this thread anymore, because after all these attempts of the community to communicate with you I am convinced that you are purposefully ignoring what others have to say and avoid dealing with their core concerns and questions because you don’t have anything meaningful to say that would address them.
Goodbye.
