I'm making a new game!
Inspired by Earthbound, old Zelda, and Mario Odyssey.
I intend to do a video every week, keeping a Devlog through video.
The title is a work in progress.

Feel free to post your thoughts in here!

I would really love to see what you guys think!  :)

Have fun!

(+1)

Continuing my video Devlog on my next game.
Still don't have a name for it yet, leave me your suggestions the replies!
Here are the channels I mentioned that I used to help me
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCn7F...
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaMr...

I'm happy to hear any thoughts or critique you may have :)

Hopefully it wont be too long before I have a playable version up for you!

Have fun!  :)

Looking forward to a playable version!

(+1)

Hopefully I have one in a couple of weeks!  :)

Wow, very nice! I always love rpg's with quircky stories and nice humor. The graphics do remind me of earthbound, but the combat system with lots of different enemies and different reactions to your attacks also reminds me of undertale, wich is coherent considering the close relation between both games. I also LOVED them both, so I'm really looking forward to this.

About the pixel art and animations, I really loved the personality of roopit and boopit, I think it standed out as a very unique expierience and I haven't really played anything like it. This game has a little less personality in my opinion, but its true that the pixel art and color palette looks more polished and professional. Also the rolling/dashing animation looks amazing!

I also have to say the game sounds amazing, the music is really, REALLY good.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to a playable version and I will be waiting for the next video as well. I will also think of names, but I'm absoluteley terrible at it hahaha I still can't decide on a name for the game I'm working on... How about "Cat-powered space oddisey"  or "Interdimensional cat quest" Those  were awefull, I'm really sorry hahaha

I like the name suggestions!

Especially "Cat-powered space oddisey"  :D

I'll add them to the suggestion list!

As for the art not having as much personality as Roopit and Boopit, what do you reckon I need to change to get more personality in it?

You think I should have little cut scenes like in Roopit and Boopit?

Also thanks for being honest, Its nice hearing positive feedback, but constructive criticism helps the game more in the long run.

Hopefully you can have a go at beta version soon!  :)

I mean, the first second you see roopit and boopit you inmediatly get the feeling that you havent seen anything even remotely similar. I think its the combination of the pixel art, the animations and the color palette. But thats not the only way to make a game attractive, I see this game, I think of the mother series and I instantly want to play it. Also the riddle master looks unique AF! You are adding all sorts of pintoresque characters so its just a matter of time, this is a much more complex game after all.

Little cut scenes are always welcome, but I think what will make this game truly shine is the story, the weird characters and specialy the combat system. An RPG with a fun story with lots of great characters will stickl in your mind for a long time, but if the combat system is also unique enough you will come back to play it again and again and again!

Man, I love rpgs so much hahaha you touched a sensible fibre with this one.

Continuing the devlog for my yet to be named game.

I was wondering if you friendly people could have a look at these screenshots and tell me if it intuitive or not.

It's actually a bit hard to tell when things look to other people the way they look to me.  I know what things are supposed to be, so my brain can't see it critically.

So, I decided to make some buildings you can go inside.

I was wondering what you guys thought of the look of the outside and inside of these buildings.

For starters, is it obvious which building you can go inside?

Here is the other store, which has a name on it.  Do you think it might look a bit too out of place with the other buildings?

This is the inside of the building from the first screenshot.

It isn't finished yet.  What I would like to know is, is it obvious where the back wall is and where the exit is?

This is inside the mediocre bomb store.  It is ment to look tacky, being "mediocre bombs" and all..

Same as before, is it obvious where the wall is?

Thanks for your help!  :)

(2 edits) (+1)

I'm sorry for not seeing this, I was kind of in the middle of a gamejam (I still am a little bit busy on the post-jam).

First on the outside: I think its not really necesary to put the arrows on the doors. To be honest I would still try to enter the doors without arrows anyway so maybe you can add a little text when you try to enter a closed building. It can be a good chance to add a dumb joke or something (I love dumb jokes). But yeah its pretty obvious what buildings you can go in, but i would still click on the other ones.

Inside: on the first screenshot its pretty obvious (much more than the second one). Maybe it is because of the shadow or the different color on the floor. But still I dont think anyone would have any problem with finding the way out on the second one either. I mean there is nowhere else to go, so going to the bottom part to exit will always be the norm in my opinion.

I hope that was helpfull!

Edit: I also don't have any problem with the bomb store being out of place. Especially if there will be more stores like that in other maps, I think its important to notice them right away.

Don't be sorry mate!  Thanks for taking the time to tell me your thoughts!  ;)

Link me to the game jam game when its up!

The game is already up on my profile, it's called "Gregory's epic adventure" if you want to check it out. But its not a huge game, its just a little gamejam experiment I did so I don't really mind if you don't feel like playing it. Thanks for asking man!

(+1)

I've downloaded it!  I'll give it ago sometime today!

Thanks!

This time I talk about what I think makes a great game!

Had a problem that made me RAGE QUIT!!

This video Devlog is about that!

This devlog is about three ideas I had to indirectly direct players to where I want them.

Big thanks to all of you who watch these!  Hope you like it!  :)

I'm thinking of making a second smaller video in the week, one more about some specific changes and improvments to Cat-Powered UFO.

If that would interest you, please do say so!

(+1)

Yeah man it's brutal hey!  xD

I see your still amazingly consistent with your devlog, look forward to trying your game!  :)

(+2)

UPDATE!

The game will be up for play-testers on the 5th of October!

Thanks in advance, you guys are doing me a solid and I appreciate the fact that you're willing to spend your time helping me.

You can sign up for playtesting here -

https://itch.io/t/958535/play-testers-come-here

Also Cat-Powered UFO has some minor visual changes

I've added an alternative tree sprite, made the 2 different bush sprites a little more varied in their colors, and added flowers.

Also, the  ground and grass are now a little darker to contrast the objects and NPC a little more.

Here is one of the old screen shots for comparison

It is admittedly a subtle difference, but I think it has made it just a little bit harsh to look at.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!  And if you're keen to have a go at the game, don't forget to sign up for playtesting!

https://itch.io/t/958535/play-testers-come-here

The new visuals look good, the flowers definitely are a nice touch!

Please keep in mind that this is only an alpha version, expect to come across game breaking bugs.

Here is how you can help me out most! -

* Record your playthrough with "Windows key + G", it also lets you record audio from your mic if you wanted to go the extra mile.

* Copy paste any bugs or comments in here

https://itch.io/t/1001582/playthrough-comments-bug-reports

If you don't want to record your playthrough for whatever reason, that's fine!  Just get some feedback to me in whatever way suits you.

here are some other things to keep in mind when you play the game

* You cannot save the game in current state

* There are 8 cats to find

* There is no ending for the game at the moment

* I estimate there is 1.5 hrs of gameplay at the moment, tho that is a very rough guess.

I'd love to know what you think of the game!  What sucked and what was awesome!  Tell me all please, and don't be afraid to be brutally honest, this is to make the game better!

Thank you all so much!  :D

Hey everyone!

Just did a small update, mostly to fix some of the bugs found through play-testers.

6/11/2020

*  Fixed a bug where the big head could roll over you for 54 damage instead 4.

*  Fixed bug where you could search the trash can over and over and keep finding chicken nuggets.

*  Fixed bug where if you pressed "CTRL" while a fish, you turned back into an alien.

*  Fixed bug where when you move some items into other room, the game thinks your not holding an item anymore.

*  Fixed bug where you could go over the wall in the cave with the cat and red rocks.

*  Changed the target loving NPC to say "SHOOT" instead of "BLAST" to stop confusion with the medicore bombs.

*  Changed the well near Drive Man to say "sacrifice" instead of donate, so players will stop getting confused with the gold coin.

*  Changed the little devils max damage from 2 to 1.

*  Added new unlockable move in battle.

Anyway, have fun!  :)

Another update with some changes made thanks to you beautiful play testers!

9/11/2020

*  Fixed a Bug where you could get out the bottom of the bomb shop without triggering the exit.

*  Halved the damage taken by enemies in the water levels.

*  Slowed down the fish character and sharks in the water levels.

*  Made it so sharks will stop chasing you if you get far enough away.

*  Lowered sandwich HP from 15 to 12 and maximum damage from 4 to 2.

*  Made a path in the main village a bit easier to see.

*  Fixed bug where the lonely bird in the cave could make you do less damage to him then your minimum damage.

*  Altered the bottom of the race track to not have such a brutal 90 degree turn.

*  Fixed bug where the riddle master would tell you the wrong button to push to lift an object for Xbox controller.

*  Fixed a bug with giving the egg to the bird man.

*  Added a little icon next to the sass abilities in battle letting the player know which sasses they have used and if they worked or not.

If you have downloaded version 1.2, I'd suggest downloading 1.21 and playing that instead so you don't get stuck!  :)

Have fun!  :D

(+1)

Hello friends!  :)

It's been a while since I've updated you on Cat-Powered UFO, so I thought I should make a post to show I'm not dead!  xD

Graphic update!  With the help of my wife, I have improved the buildings a lot

Notice the back of the buildings now has a fire escape.

The shop has a sign now, and there is some space devil graffiti on the back of a random building.

The mediocre bomb shop looks more decrepit now, which makes sense given the name.

And here is the front of the police station...  Yeah, it's just better, not much else to say about that.

Here are some of the old building just to give you some comparison

The perspective was wrong compared to the other sprites in the game, that and the shading was a little whack.

There have been a bunch of other improvements as well!

But I think I will put them into future posts as to not make this one huger than it is already.

I plan to update this devlog more often, I have been pretty slack in recent days and it's about time i got back on top of it!

To everyone who follows along with cat-Powered UFO, thank you so much!  I hope the finished product lives up to your expectations!!  :)

(+1)

Hey friends!

After playing games on itch and making videos about them, I thought it would be a good idea to make a video about the most common mistakes I see in game design.

So here it is!

I will come back with an update for Cat_powered UFO soon!  :)

Have fun :D

(+1)

The new version is out!  :D

There are A LOT of changes, I won't get into them all here.

But I will go through the changes to the early game and why I think they are necessary.

First up, the way the game allows you to progress is significantly changed.

In previous versions, you could unlock the roll ability and the lift ability, and you would basically have free reign over the world from there.

The problem is, there are some situations later on that require the purple plasma attack, a player could do all the work of getting up to such a part, only to not be able to finish that section due to not having an ability they had no idea they could even unlock.

These smoking flowers make clear that they can only be killed by a purple plasma attack.  They block the way to several key areas and items that would usually allow the player to collect cats and travel to different dimensions.  Now the player needs to unlock the attack to make this possible.

Another problem was players not understanding that they can travel to different dimensions at all.

Now the player is forced to explore the slime dimension in order to unlock the ability to lift things.  This new Slime creature NPC is key in explaining this.

To make more obvious the importance of the Riddle master NPC he now has his own tent

TLDR:

So basically now the player is made to unlock the roll, lift, and attack abilities before they can get themselves in a dead-end situation due to not having said abilities.

If you want to check out all the new changes follow this link

https://itch.io/t/1004572/change-log

Want to try Cat-Powered UFO for yourself?

Check it out here, don't forget to give me your feedback!

https://thesneak.itch.io/cat-powered-ufo

I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Have fun!  :)

I've been working on a problem that has annoyed me since the start of the project

Shadows stack up and make sections with a heavy amount of trees or rocks look stupid, I've even had players think the ground was burnt.

But now I have finally done away with this problem!

Have a look!

I decided to keep the tiniest bit of shadow stacking, since that is the way it works in real life after all.

Maybe this seems like no big deal, and I guess It isn't as far as gameplay goes, but I have been perplexed by how to fix this problem since the very beginning of Cat-Powered UFO.

I feel like I should give credit to the one youtube channel that spoke about this topic

Here's a link to the video I used

If you're using gamemaker and creating a game with a similar perspective to mine, I'd suggest giving it a watch.

Another thing I have been working on is making the player have some visual indicator that an object is interactable.

Here is how I have done this

When you are facing an object and are close enough to interact with it, the object flashes slightly white.

It's a little hard to tell from the still frame image, but you get what I mean.

There is ANOTHER new version of Cat-Powered UFO out with these new features and some bug fixes!

Check it out

Which of these looks better?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!   Beer!

The new one because the contrast is better. In the original, the orange color of the text is too similar to the orange used in the spaceship.

Also the jittery motion of the text draws more attention to it.

That being said, I would get rid of the "Welcome to CAT-POWERED UFO" at the bottom because it's redundant and conflicting. Is the user's eye supposed to be drawn to the jittery motion of the large title or the small title?  Just put "Press 'Enter' or A button to Start"
