"Voices Of The Void" Pre-Alpha

Gather unknown signals from deep, silent space 路 By mrdrnose

Triangulation and disks are frustrating. It needs to be revisited.

It mostly applies to the start of the game, I think.

Triangulation :
The triangulation is not complicated, but frustrating as hell.

The cursors are painfully slow and you have three of them to move.Of course each signal are MILES away from your starting position.

The time you take to place all three cursors and the time it takes to make the triangulation is enough to have the signal DESPAWN after you spent the slow time to get to it.

This happenned FOUR time in a row. I spent THREE in-game hour to get a signal. It was the second of the day, it's 5PM and i'm asked to deliver 5 signal by the end of the day. I have level up download speed to maximum and it still took half of the day to get one drive level 0 and get a second signal.
I'm day 3. It's litteraly impossible to meet quotas in early game.

Disk :
Everyone already said it.

Everyone already know it.

Unexpected error.

Twenty times in a row. It's just unfun. All you do is look at the damn screen and read "Unexpected error". Let me type the damn hash code, at least i was doing something actif.

Move your crosshair and press 1, 2 and 3 where you want the dots to be. Bit faster for triangulation.

About disks, they're probably making it easier next patch but for now I reccomend switching to a lower difficulty, which helps all around (easy++ only asks for 1 server info thing and at most 3 signals, tho that might be bugged)

Since upgrades make the experience much more enjoyable, perhaps you could start a new save, sell the mre barrel, put the points into atm and get money, then transfer money to your central save file and cash it out at ATM to get points back? You can do this multiple times until you feel you have enough points.

Just some suggestions for what you could do.

I felt like i was missing something for triangulation, my bad, i'll try that.

I was looking to change the difficulty too, but i guess it's only possible on doing a new game ?

Thanks for the tips.

edit : 1, 2, 3 does not work on azerty keyboard

Oh, different keyboard type. Then I can't really help, sorry.

Try checking the tutorial I guess. Only thing that tells you the binds is that so maybe it helps. (tho it's pretty broken so idk)

About difficulty, I dunno if you can change it mid-save. I assumed so since it used to be a setting you could change at your heart's content.

Hope you can figure stuff out. I'll try checking settings out when I can.

About the unexpected errors when you're getting hashcodes: craft a whole pile of server upgrades (1 metal, 1 plastic, 1 electronics) to carry around with you when you're on hash runs. Look at the satellite server before you start the hash request; if there's less than 2 upgrades present then slap a couple in there and quit worrying about it. Getting hashes with 0 upgrades is borderline impossible, with 1 is doable, with 2 or 3 is easy peasy.

About the triangulation: dump all your points into beelining ping cooldown and speed; it doesn't get manageable until those are at least halfway to maxed out. I think sensor speed also influences how fast the radar cursors move, but it's kind of unclear. Aside from fire extinguishers and MREs, wastebaskets and rocks and empty flower pots and folding chairs are also good fast points now that item box space is no longer a factor. Your radar towers will start breaking down around day 5 or 6; learn where those are so you can run around and reset them after every bit of rain. Don't bother buying new fuses, they're a trap, you'd need to spend at least 200 points per day just to stay ahead of the weather.

Oh wow. Thank you for giving me the server upgrade recipe. I thought the upgrades were prohibitively expensive to use in the early game, but it turns out I could be turning all this trash around the base into upgrades instead!

So i don't need fuse to run the radars ? I'm confused.

Fuses only protect them from damage, so when a radar would normally break down and need to be repaired, one of the fuses will protect it and break. It isn鈥檛 really worth it right now with their current prices and how quickly they break, but that should change in the next patch.

Oh I see, thank you.

I kinda understand the Triangulation of a signal BUT why a Radar, this are not planes its radio waves from space
Devs could easily use random satellites (in a triangle formation) to pin-point the signals, why are we using Radar systems that are DAMN likely only used to spot aircraft??

I mean its a "cool" one little more thing you have to do to get a signal, just not really well thought out
and then the damn expensive Fuses, with nightly thunderstorms, guess I better start saving 200-400 points  "just in case"

Ngl just speedrun kerfur0 for hashes.

Honestly I like the new triangulation system (minus the current bug with the cr towers). It feels like you're actually using the tech to narrow in on the signals rather than just playing a weird game of hide-and-seek. I know a lot of people have been complaining about getting the cursors around a signal only for it to vanish, but, that's not a new thing. It happened with the old system too. Granted, it might seem like it happens a little more frequently with the new system, but if you haven't noticed- there IS a trade-off: You no longer get "sensor error" or "invalid object" pings. If you triangulate in time it's *always* a success.

The floppy thing,... that definitely needs some tweaking. As tedious is it was to manually write down the hashcodes before, at least you were actively doing something to occupy your time. Now if the downloading takes too long you're just kind of sitting around with your thumb up your bum the whole time, and you can't exactly walk away to do something else. Honestly I feel like they should add some sort of real-time minigame or something to the satellite servers that can not only give the player something to do, but also possibly help reduce the chance of "unexpected errors". Maybe have the game get harder for every server upgrade installed, so it doesn't end up becoming too trivial once you have a bunch of upgrades installed.

I do prefer the triangulation over the old system. It was just frustrating to move the three dots one at a time when the signal were all far away. Just for it to dissapear.
I didn't knew about the button calling the curosers to your position, because those buttons does not work on azerty keyboard 馃槶. I had to be told before I realized this. It forces me to switch to qwerty, it became lot more easy and doable but it's still annoying because control become weird (imagine : Z for up,  Q for left, S and D stay the same) and there's no way to reassign the call buttons (1, 2 and 3 keys)

Actually, the devs apparently thought of this because you don't have to use the keyboard at all to use the different cursors. You can do it all using just the mouse. There's 7 colored lights underneath the triangulation screen- clicking on the first four switches control to that color cursor (including that central one), while clicking on the last 3 will call that color cursor to your position. No keys required.

Oh boy, that's good to know. Thanks for the information, that's going to help
