Hello! I just finished my first top-down tileset

--EDIT--

I also made two "expansion packs" rocks and bushes

(+2)

Great start! Pretty solid work all around, from the colors to the shapes. Cheers!

Hello, thanks for good words :)

After update it isn't so consistent especially the rock :3

(+1)

Nice additions, the rock is a little rough, that is for sure. I would for starters make the dark outline around it a bit lighter in color.

Thanks for the tip. I will think it over

I made more realistic rocks =)

Nice, some bushes and/or trees wood be good.

Hello! I've just added the rock and two bushes

Nice! I love how clean it looks! I also think we might have done the exact same grass tutorial hehe- SLYNYRD? They have an inedible pixel art website right? I am also learning so much from them too! I'm a big fan practicing top down too!-You did so much better than me haha! I think you have a "knack" for it!

Pixel Blog Lesson 20 ;)

I tried to learn from the lessons but my studying process is a bit strange. I start to draw like in lesson... Several hours later I give up and start to draw just for fun (I continue to draw the same object but do it by putting something on screen ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). After that I eventually find that I understood the method described in the lesson ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The same thing repeated with all the elements of the asset pack. Except roads because I draw them without tutorials and from first try 0_o and grass ending (transition to road or water) because it was obvious for what shape to give it.

I looked on your asset pack. It also looks good! And I think I can give you some advises (maybe the advices aren't good at all but... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

Grass transition looks too flat for several reasons:

  1. You used just  one pixel outline. Top-down tiles have light point so on edges that near to light use can leave one pixel outline but for other edges you can add additional shadow.
  2.   You shifted pixel only for one pixel from their normal place and you shifted particular pixels. It don't create "wavy" feeling from grass. If you draw some ledges by using brush with the size nearly 3x3 by and then distort them, it could create "wavy" feeling.

As one more observation about lush grass. You used the most dark color as people usually use shadow. The lesson used it a bit less strictly...

I am not expert at all so I don't know is it useful ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

P.S The cover of your asset pack uses Wood font by Narik? :) My game (GreedySlime) also uses it

WoW!!!! Thank you so much for amazing advice and comment 🥹🥹🥹🥹 that’s so helpful!! I hope we can become friends because we are both making top down assets ^_^ please let me know if you find anything else out there that’s useful! I love the wooden pixel font too!

The list of channels/playlists about pixel-art (some of them contains only several videos about pixel art):

Books:

  • Pixel Logic. You can't download it legally for free so I DON'T RECOMMEND you to download it from pirate sites or aggregators such an anna's archive (that contain it).....

Sites:

If you would like to know, I am going to start learning procedural/generative art in future (it is not about AI. it is about creating program that creates art from random seed)

Hey dustdfg!

Thank you so much for the comprehensive list of youtube channels! Pure awesomeness! I am familiar with a just a few on the list in particular AdamCYounis- he is legendary haha! I love Pixel Overload too! SO grateful for your in depth and wonderful reply!

I actually have a PDF of pixel logic too !!! (It's so amazing right??!!!) and I am so glad you recommended paying for it and supporting the awesome pixelers that made it with love!~ I really wanted a physical copy of the book too since I refer to it so much but unfortunately I haven't seen it for sale in Australia and I was going to print it out but because it's so big it was going to cost a lot. I hope there is a physical book someday- there deserves to be.

I would like to learn more about procedural/generative art too! I think the process of making art is going through an evolution atm and excited to be on board with that!

I wanted to share with you a special website I found! (If you haven't found it already).
https://www.spriters-resource.com/

It is really useful for working out and learning how sprite sheets are presented/seeing beautiful pixels.

About Pixel Logic "recommendation". Yeah I recommended it but...
Did I recommend to buy it? No, more likely no than yes. I don't like to recommend to buy something (especially proprietary) but I can't just say where you can find some not program stuff illegally (🏴‍☠️ )...

About genart (I also include here procedural level generation). I know about it really not much but I will share the resource...

First of all, I recommend you to start from random level generation because it is an incredible base. Then... uhmm.. I have a poor list of topics but don't know the order....

The list:

  • Marching cubes
  • L-systems (allow to create flora such trees or leafs; as I heard also levels...)
  • Noises (make something more natural)
  • Shaders (Programs so it can do everything)
  • Wave function collapse / Model synthesis (The cheapest method to create something procedurally for those who can create something by hands. Just watch the following videos: 1 and 2)
  • I think math. Linear algebra is most common (3Blue1Brown: Linear Algebra)

As an additional link if you eventually know Russian language, you can watch it https://www.youtube.com/c/foo52ru

I didn't understand the uniqueness of spriters-resource site.

I also found one good introduction to shaders

I love them!
