This tutorial is for those who want to learn to draw pixel art slimes. In order to do that, we need to define what a slime is. Slimes are often depicted as green gooey round creatures although they aren't necessarily always green. They are usually round in stature but sometimes they can take other forms by shapeshifting. They jiggle, bounce, or slurk (is that a word?) around and often try to attack the player in games. Sometimes they have eyes, sometimes not. Sometimes they have limbs or can even carry weapons! Sometimes they are elemental. The list goes on, but we're going to stop the definition there so that we can start.
First we need to sketch a blob such as this example.
When doing this make sure to make it look a little flubbery in shape. What do I mean?
The example on the left looks too firm for a slime, make sure the base of the slime stretches out a bit. Next Add some shadows and highlights. Here is an example of light coming from the top right somewhere.
You can make slimes appear translucent by giving them a bright outline.
You can also show objects within the slime by showing a dark shadow within.
However when doing this make sure to remove or decrease the highlight or it gets in the way.
You can also show movement with the slime!
Slimes will squash and stretch whenever the move around, when slimes stretch outward, their slime distribution has to squash inward to compensate for the stretch. Here is a little demonstration of what I mean.
You can see that happening in the previous animation where the slime is idling on the ground and also where the slime is dropping from the ceiling. The "slurk" animation where it's crawling forward is a little different because there is drag and friction involved at the base of the slime but it's still important to know.
That's pretty much all there is to it for basic slimes. Don't be afraid to experiment around with different slime designs too!
With enough practice, you will be able to conjure up all kinds of slimes!
