What would you do? *worried about how to continue*

I got on the train a bit too late with game making and went for the easiest engine possible using RPG Maker to make a game. It was a small idea that I had for years. Now I'm well in to a number years working on a game. I'm beat on the idea that I need to port the game to another engine so It has more of a chance to be played by more people.

But then it might not make a difference. If I take the time to re-create everything then it will take longer to finish what I started. I've started having a go with using Unity and I see allot of promise, but I also see I'll need to spend more money buying assets and engines, it's such a step up that I'll need to learn allot more. My options are open on what I should do, it's just a messy situation.

What would you guys do? :/

If I were you, I’d release the game with RPG Maker, and then start working on a new project on a new engine. If this is your first game, it will be very valuable experience to work on another one, using new tools, to force yourself out of you comfort zone.

But that’s just my opinion, I don’t know everything about your situation.

I second this. Finish the game as is, then make the sequel or another game in something else if you like. The game can get an "HD remaster" later, but now it's more important to complete it.

Thanks for your reply I've been trying out Unity today and purchased the top down engine. It's not as easy as RPG Maker, It'll take some getting used to for a small     3-D game project. I'm not going to abandon the game I have been working on. The story is almost done, It's best to finish off what I started and branch it out.

Is there anything you can do in Unity that you need to do and can't do in RPG Maker?

If the answer is "no" stick to RPG maker.

Other than the graphics and porting to other platforms I've thought quite allot over the last few days also. Unity really has allot of good features, but it's really not that easy to use. I spent some money on some stuff, but I can't get any of it to work out of the box. On the other hand I'm playing  my rpg and know that most of what I did really took months to finalise with the scripts and eventing. It's just a massive shame that it will be locked to Windows only.

I've decided I'm just going to get the story finished. If I work on the graphics or new features even more then I'll be way behind on what I would like to do. I could just try porting the game if there's any success in the project and recreate it in a new engine. I'll still try using Unity too, it's just on another level to do the simple stuff I've taken for granted with RPG Maker.

Firm respect for those who use the engine for game making.

Hello!

I'm sorry you find yourself with the bad feel that your game will get stuck to the Windows OS, but as others told you, trying to reconvert to a complete new and different engine is actually having to remake the game. I checked your game page and trailer and I must say that I find it very detailed: you have story, characters, maps, sprites and art, music, script events, ...

I tried years ago to play with RPGMaker2003 (it was 2004... yep, some years ago), and at least I remember how easy was to start prototyping (making characters, set them a few lines of dialog, a few maps...). But yes, on Unity you have to make a good bunch of tools and stuff by yourself first.

Getting it short... I wanted to help and found this:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/363890/RPG_Maker_MV/

RPGMaker MV allows you to convert the project to MacOS, Linux, Android,...

But you are using RPGMAker VX Ace,

So I tried to find a converter:

https://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?threads/vx-ace-to-mv-converter.45296/

No idea if you tried this already, but I thought that, maybe, if everything goes well, that could help you achieve to publish your game in more platforms.

Good luck!!

And Merry Christmas!!!

Thank you for taking a look at the game and offering some further advice. I feel it's just more important to just get the project finished. I've weighed the options after playing through the story, and well, this is a bit of different sort of game. No matter how much I've added features it's only really held the game back because the story is the key. If I get the chance because people enjoy the game enough, then I'll rip it to another game engine. It's just going to be a leap of faith re-doing and porting everything.

I have something for you that will "magically" turn art into code. Reading this post has given me a little motivation.

I say it should be ready for a pre-alpha release by no later than February.

As of now it can export platformers and top downs to hml5 and android. It operates using just placed art and the names of user defined animations.

I'm working on a stylish hack and slash right now with it,  also the last game I just released was made with it.
