If the game still starts at windowed until you open a save file, turn off Automatic Screen Res in video settings

The white ping is the exact spot you need to dig. If the item comes out in the green light, you might not be digging where the detector is looking at (though you still managed to succeed). I'd suggest using the detector while crouching, makes finding the spot leagues easier
