A tiny cruise*

* through an infinite space

A Tiny Cruise* started as a personal challenge to create a fun, arcade-style car controller from scratch. But once I had finished the controller, I realised how satisfying it was to drive, drift and boost around the map - so I decided to build a full game around it.

To expand the experience, I worked on procedural road generation to create varied routes. For visuals, I modeled a retro ’80s environment and made custom shaders and effects to match the aesthetic. I also added music and designed sound effects.

While at this point it was already fun to endlessly drive around, due to the car simply being satisfying to control, I still wanted to add an extra motivator to draw players in. I did this by adding checkpoints along the way that give the player score, allowing them to go for high scores. The checkpoints give more score the faster a player reaches them, which also motivates them to drive faster. Driving faster requires users to use the drifting and boosting mechanics, which, in turn, are satisfying to use, thus pushing them towards a more engaging playstyle. That said, for players that do not wish to engage in this, the checkpoints give points no matter what, so even slowly cruising players get the reward of going for high scores if they simply chain together a lot of checkpoints.

The end result is a fun, yet relaxing game where you can cruise around aimlessly, being intrinsically motivated by the inherent satisfaction of driving as well as the extrinsic reward of checkpoints/highscore.

This was a very fun and rewarding project, and I learned a lot about developing core driving systems, procedural generation, and creating retro visuals (I had a lot of fun with shaders) from the ground up. I enjoyed working on it, and I hope you enjoy playing the little demo.

You can find the game here: https://samuwhale.itch.io/atinycruise

This is really charming. Overall really well done, polished gameplay and lovely art/music. Only gripe I have is that the monster spawns can be a bit unfair, making it impossible to kill them in time. But yeah, very nice job :)

Thanks for the feedback! I definitely agree upgrades would be nice, as well as other weapons with different firerates/recoil for better control! Or a weapon without recoil to be able to kill off enemies without blasting yourself into lava. But yeah, good ideas, thanks :)

Thank you! That's nice :)

thanks :) glad to hear!

cubey is precious, protect at all costs

Hope your car doesn't try to drive you into lava though :')

I really like this! I'm a huge fan of rhythm games, and this one is pretty neat. Short clean little experience. Nice art too :)

I really like the concept! Sadly the 'False Game Lost State' Bug kept bothering me, but it was still fun to play! :)

not sure why you'd keep a keypad somewhere in a wall only to be accessed when it is destroyed by dynamite. But hey, I'm no architect. Nevertheless, very fun and charming game! I like it :)

Really REALLY charming game. Love the stylisation. Also impressive how many levels you were able to  put in in such a short time :)

nice game :) nice work on the visuals too

Very simple but clean little experience. Jump is a bit too floaty for me, but oh well, still a fun game! Nice job :)

Feels really polished! The art is really nice too. Good job :)

Well... the title did warn me, but yeah, I did not know ant games could get this frustrating. 10/10 game though.

The AI was actually quite charming, I enjoyed it! It was a bit buggy though, and dying keeps your money so it's quite impossible to 'lose'. Still nice though!

Thanks :)!

Thanks :)  also yeah, it is quite poorly optimised unfortunately.. oh well

Thanks! Poor Cubey...

Sorry to hear, yeah we didn't really properly optimise the game oops

A bit complex but it looks like a very big game to just make in 3 days! Impressive!

Yeah the health definitely needs some tweaking haha. Glad to hear that you liked the game though!

Thank you so much! It sure was fun to make!

We made the faces of Cubey ourselves, so I'm glad to hear that you liked them :D

Thanks for your kind words :) and yeah... Cubey is not having the greatest time hahaha

That is an impressive highscore! And yeah, the damage taking and health still needs to be tweaked a bit more. We were also thinking of making health pickups in the game so that you could get a higher health. But that's for future developing haha

Thank you so much! The music we found online, but the art is made by ourselves so it's really nice to hear that you liked it!

I'm not really sure how to play the game.. but nonetheless I still screamed at the jumpscare hahaha. I am way too easy to scare :')

I first thought I wouldn't enjoy this type of game... but after a few rounds and when my AI bat had higher specs I got really competitive hahaha. Instead of a simple game of pong it felt like I was watching an exciting soccer game! (The voice between the games also sounded pretty cool!)

Very simple, but very clever and creative idea. Well executed too :) nice job!

Fun little game. Nice implementation of the theme. The voice acting is a nice touch too! The platforming was a bit clunky at times, but still fun experience :)

This is a very fun concept, it's a bit clunky now, but still very fun to play! Would love to see it more fleshed out! The art is lovely too! Nice job :)

This game would work very well on a phone! Overall pretty nice experience, feels really polished Would like to see a bit more interactivity/influence in the charging of the AI, now it's just a waiting game. In general the game is fun though! Nice job :)

Fun mechanics, and the game can be quite tough (in a good way). Really charming and polished visuals. Could do with some music, but overall very polished experience. Neat :)

The art style is really cool. I like it a lot. (small problem though is that sometimes some items render improperly over other items, but that's just a minor thing). The music is neat. The gameplay is really addicting, and I love how unforgiving it is. Overall very polished experience.

Simple little game. Would like to see some high-score or something. The particle effect is cool.

I really like the visual style, it feels very polished. Only gripe I have is that the cursor was bugged for me (it didn't show up), so the game was quite difficult as a result. Other than that, really nice experience!

I'm usually not a great fan of tower defense games, but this one was quite fun! Could use some more visual feedback on what unit is currently selected (when placing down), but the art in general is nice. Good job :)

Fun concept! Though I found it a bit difficult to control. Nice art and music as well :)

Thanks for the feedback! That's something that we found quite hard to balance/get right - any tips?
