Update: Version 0.0.1

Main Menu.

Created a main menu with a parallax background and scrolling camera. In future updates it will select from a random assortment of backgrounds and showcase characters from the player’s collection.

Multiple Characters.

Added support for multiple characters. Many systems have been updated to make adding characters simpler and faster.

Icons.

Skill icons have received slight changes. The game itself also has a new icon when appearing in folders or on the desktop.

Beta Release?

Will launch around version 0.5.0. We’re still a ways off from then, so please be patient. The game remains in a non-playable state.

Future Updates:

0.0.2

The character collection system will be added. This means that characters can be restricted based on whether or not they have been recruited.
The home menu will be created. It will contain a variety of different menus for quests, upgrades, recruitment, and more. The home menu will also display a chosen character in the player’s collection walking through town.

0.0.3

The second character, Arvis, and third unannounced character will be added to the game. Both characters will receive their respective trailers alongside a new presentation of various features and gameplay. All current character’s skills and unique abilities will be added to the game. Skill cooldowns will also be introduced.

0.0.5

Various enemies and their mechanics will be added. Stage mechanics will also be implemented.
Chapter 1 of the main story will be added. Only portions of it will be showcased once 0.0.5 is completed.
The fourth currently unannounced character will be added and will have a trailer to accompany them.

1st Closed Alpha Test

10 copies of the game will be given out to select testers. All testers will be required to answer any surveys given to them, or must forfeit the ability to join another Closed Alpha or Beta test.
If interested, please reach out to me using whatever methods are readily available to you. Surveys will be brief and are for the sake of improving the game.
This Alpha test is scheduled to begin before the end of the month.

Thank you.

As always, thank you for supporting this project.

What is "Just Your Average Quest"?

Well, it's not as the title suggests.

Join honorary knight Marissa as she travels to the capitol of Thyala in search of the long lost princess. Meet many different adventurers on your quest, and get to know them through their unique stories and gameplay styles! Challenge high difficulty boss battles and connect with other players through planned online features.

You can view a video showcasing the graphics here!

What makes this game unique?

RPG upgrades + Castlevania gameplay.

This game seeks to combine traditional RPG elements with the gameplay style of games like Castlevania. Each character will have two unique skills and a unique ability that is exclusive to them. Buffs and status afflictions will be necessary to clear high level, end game content.  Clearing high difficulty quests will allow you to create weapons that greatly increase the strength of your character, and will prepare you for later content.

Free to play.

The game will be free to play, but will have optional in-game purchases for those looking to potentially add new characters and gear to their roster. Marissa will be a free character available for anyone who picks up the game!

Content Updates.

There will be both story modes, and highly challenging quests against bosses. Just Your Average Quest will receive frequent updates, so don't worry about running out of content.

What characters are there?

Marissa.

Meet Marissa! A master swordsman, she has no trouble landing several hits per second.

Her first skill is Bleeding Edge, which releases a forward thrust of the sword and inflicts bleed. This effect cannot stack.

Her second skill is Hundred Slashes, which increases strength by 10% for 20 seconds.

Her unique ability is Ever Stronger. Increases strength by 5% every 10 seconds. This can stack up to three times.

Arvis.

Meet Arvis! The king of Vastoa, he'll stop at nothing to rescue his daughter from the clutches of evil. Friend to all, he's even managed to find his very own wolf companion!

His first skill is Friend to All, which summons a wolf that attacks enemies, and has its own health.

His second skill is Hero's Charge, which deals damage to foes from a distance.

His unique ability is Wolf's Companionship. While a wolf is on the field, grants 20% strength. Once a wolf dies, inflicts -30% strength for 10 seconds.

Special Thanks

I'd like to thank the YouTube channel Dragalia Foundry, both for being a positive support and also for being an inspiration behind my YouTube videos.

Supporters.

I'd like to thank Amber, who has supported me financially. This project would not have been possible without her support.

You.

Thank you for taking the time to read about this project. My favorite aspect of game design is not creating games, but sharing them with the world. So thank you for reading and showing interest in the project. That being said, I hope you have a nice day and look forward to seeing future updates.

Hello!

I just wanted to provide a quick update on the game! I still haven't settled on a name yet, but that will come with time. However, I hope you enjoy the new announcements!

The protagonist's design is completed!

Meet the protagonist! A determined, yet kind-hearted girl that swears to protect the lives of monsters. But why does she seek to protect monsters? And who are those that wish to harm them? Stay tuned for future updates! This character portrait has been modified and was purchased through the following link: https://federico-calchera.itch.io/pixel-character-portraits.

What is this project?

Do you love RPGs? Do you enjoy capturing and summoning a variety of different creatures? Well, I do too! I've always wanted to make my own RPG; specifically, my very own Pokémon-like game! So, a few weeks ago, I finally decided to start work on my dream game. I'm still in fairly early stages of development, and would like to receive as much feedback as possible once I launch a closed beta!

When is it going to be playable?

Unfortunately, since development has just started recently, it will be a few months before a closed beta is released. Also, since this is an RPG / Monster Capturing game, a lot of the fundamental features will need to be completed prior to releasing a beta test. Until then, I will make sure to update this Devlog at least once per week.

What makes it unique?

I aim to blend the best parts of old school Pokémon with the storytelling and humor of games like Undertale and Mother 3. I truly want to create environments for players to explore, as opposed to the routes and towns of Pokémon games.  Using my experience with pixel art, I also want to create creatures that players will grow close with and feel attached to. I also want to take as much feedback into consideration as possible! If you have any ideas that you would like to be implemented into the game, just send a quick reply to this post! If something appears to need changing, just let me know!

How do I support this project?

All replies are incredibly motivating, and are also greatly appreciated. I will not be accepting any donations until the project is in a more complete state, and an official trailer is launched. So, what's the best way to support this project? Show your interest in the game and make sure to share it around!

The end!

Thank you for taking the time to read this Devlog, and for supporting the project. As a fun bonus for those who read all the way to the end (or for those who scrolled to the bottom, I suppose) I will show off one of the monsters I recently created! Expect to see a couple of these every week. That being said, I hope you have a great day, and stay safe!

New creature revealed:

Frostag / Glaciadier!

Reply with the name you prefer!

Story~

A young girl goes to visit her grandmother one day, but finds that she isn't there. With help from the local townspeople and sword in hand, she goes on a quest to find her lost grandmother and bring peace to the world!

Graphics~

Pixel art graphics inspired by both HeartBeast on YouTube and The Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past! The gif above shows in game artwork, created by me! I use Aseprite and Tilesetter to create my sprites and tilesets. Sprites may be remade and altered in the future.

Gameplay~

Little Red (Temporary Name) is an Action RPG inspired by The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past and The Minish Cap! This game will feature several unique items, which will hopefully create meaningful and varied combat. It will also feature an upgrade system, which will allow you to upgrade your character and weapons as quests are completed and the story progresses.

Progress~

In two days, I've managed to create all of the necessary character sprites, as well as a handful of environmental set pieces and tilesets! Basic movement is working, but I will allow my close friends to playtest it so I can make adjustments and make the controls feel as smooth and responsive as possible. Hitboxes and hurtboxes have been introduced, so tall grass can be cut down with the swing of a sword.

Future Goals~

I will be implementing enemies and enemy AI into the game as soon as possible, in order to test out combat and to begin playtesting as quickly as I can.

Multiple different sword and cloak colors would make for a more customizable experience,  and could increase players' attachment to the player character.

Multiplayer is also a feature that I want to implement, as I think it would greatly increase the game's enjoyability and appeal.

Thank You!

Thank you for reading this Devlog. The next one is planned for Saturday, but if any major changes are made I'll be sure to update you quickly on them. Once again, thank you, and I hope you have a great day!

-Witchy

Fun game! I love the style and music. The keyboard controls aren't great, and sometimes the terrain generation can create unreachable areas. Other than that, I enjoyed it! Looking forward to more demos / a full release.

Second for me. Good luck to you!

Thank you so much!

Thank you for the tip! I really appreciate it.

fixed it! I apologize

Day 6,

For now, I think I'm finished! The game isn't perfect and I'll probably tweak it more later, but for now I'm going to submit it! A very short game, but I hope those of you who check out submissions will enjoy.

Gameplay so far!

(yes it's not a lot but I'm proud lol).

Day 5,

Once again, I didn't have much time to work on Keeping it Cool today. Which is unfortunate! However, I'm confident I'll be done within the next few days.

I have finished the main menu, and all of the music! All that's left is sound effects, more levels, and the ending of the game. Anyways, good luck as always!

-Kara

Frozen Meter Depleting!

Idle Animation and Coin Spin Animation!

Will upload some soon!

Day 4,

I managed to get a lot done today! In fact, I might be done with the game pretty soon. Which is good, because I'm going to also be participating in the Nokia game jam in a few days! A much shorter time period, but hopefully I'll be able to complete it.

Anyways, these are the things I completed today!

  1. Blue Coins now refill the ice meter.
  2. Wall jump works but is finicky
  3. Completed making the first 2 levels
  4. Added flag that sends the player to the next level
  5. Made a few more sprites
  6. Started making the main menu.

...This is not the final menu, it's just a temporary for now.

As always, good luck to my fellow jammers! I'll continue to provide updates until I am finished.

-Kara

thank you!

Day 3,

I haven't had much time to make progress today. However, I've still added a couple key features and I wanted to show some of them!

I added the decreasing ice timer, and added animated blue coins and a simple platform! (Working on making it a one-way platform). Also, dropping far enough causes the level to restart, and so does the timer hitting zero.

Hopefully I'll be able to work on it more later tonight! If I do, I'll have some more things to show off, so stay tuned.

Completed:

  1. Several environmental sprites
  2. Character sprites and most animations
  3. Character controls
  4. Main background music
  5. Add Warmth Meter

To Do:

  1. Jump animation
  2. Add cold objects
  3. Add warm objects
  4. Main menu
  5. Sound effects
  6. Title / Game Icon

-Kara

thanks!

Looking forward to playing this once you're done!

cream girl

Day 2,

When you decide to scrap your entire project, you've gotta work extra hard to make up for lost time.

...Which is what I've spent all of today doing!

// Fun Fact: Coding a game with a lot of dialogue and click options as your first ever game isn't all that easy, or fun//

So, instead, I'm working on a game called Keeping It Cool! I'll use the theme: "cold" both in terms of temperature and in terms of character traits.

Basic Summary

Over time, a meter (which will be displayed in the top right of the screen) will slowly deplete. Once it runs out, your ice cream melts and you lose the level. The player will have to platform, while also making sure to avoid warm objects and go towards cold objects.

Overall, a pretty simple little game! I want to keep it short to guarantee that I actually finish it.

Completed:

  1. Several environmental sprites
  2. Character sprites and most animations
  3. Character controls
  4. Main background music

To Do:

  1. Jump animation
  2. Add warmth meter
  3. Add cold objects
  4. Add warm objects
  5. Main menu
  6. Sound effects
  7. Title / Game Icon

Looking forward to working on this more tomorrow, and best of luck to other first time jammers/developers as well!

-Kara

Devlog for the game I'm going to be working on! Made a simple background to start:

The premise is simple! You make simple choices and try to "win over" the girl in the end. Multiple endings are planned (for now).

1. Hi! I'm Kara~ There's not much to know about me except that I'm a 17 year old girl.

2. Nope. Joining because I've never done a game jam before (or finished making a game) so hopefully this will be good motivation! Also I'm hoping to learn a lot.

3. Indie games like Celeste and A Hat In Time are some of my main inspirations when it comes to making games.

4. I have (very little) experience with Unity!

5. Simple pixel art and making people smile.

6. Make something that people enjoy!
