Pixel Study4 # – Isometric Glass Bottle of wine (Final part)

It’s finally over! That damn bottle of wine! This time it was a real challenge… after deciding on the palette I drew the wine and moved on to color the various parts just to separate them visually.

From then on it was all about adjusting and refining reflections, shades and highlights, taking care to be consistent with the tones and shadows used on the cap. The last step was to add nuances to the wine.

Ugh it was a lot of work but I have to say it was worth it! I really like the end result, considering I’ve just started.

From now on all subsequent artistic works will exclusively concern the assets for Eternal Light

Pixel Study4 # – WIP Isometric Glass Bottle of wine

Ugh glass is REALLY really hard!😩

I’m going crazy between reflections, highlights, shades.. and I’m just at the bottle cap, I hope to finish it within a couple of days! 🤦‍♂️

For this drawing I started from the shape of the bottle, trying to make it as realistic as possible. To make things easier I used curved lines and ellipses for the bottom and neck of the bottle.

After defining the shape I started working on the various parts. I chose the cap first and then chose the entire palette for the possible shades. Again it took many attempts to find the right mix of complexity and style.

I think I’ve done a good job so far, tomorrow I should start the body of the bottle.. damn it!

Pixel Study #3 – Isometric Wood Cube

Here I am struggling with the wooden cube. Realistically recreating wood is very different from recreating metal surfaces. Both gold and iron have smooth and well-defined faces, the reflections and shades are quite clear… absolutely not with wood!

The wood has irregular grains, continuous shades, cracks… a total mess!

Here I started with the usual brush and the three usual basic colors, but after a while, however, I realized that the patterns relating to the veins are very difficult to render well with pixels.

After MANY attempts I tried to simplify using linear shapes but not too much.

The final result isn’t bad, I’ll definitely try to refine the performance further but for now I can say I’m happy with this!

And now it’s the glass’s turn.. I get shivers just thinking about it..

Pixel Study #2 – Isometric Iron/Metal Cube

Here is my second attempt on the study of pixel art materials and I continue with iron/metal. Also in this case I tried to reproduce shadows and lightsin a realistic way to give the idea of ​​”shiny” metal.

The procedure was always to start from a basic palette, that is, to establish the colors relating to the three faces of the cube and then to understand which half tones were good for each shade.

Armed with a brush, ink and eraser, I jotted down a few somewhat chaotic highlights and gradually refined them… then I added those dots to give the idea of ​​an erm… box? I don’t know, the result isn’t bad but in reality I’ve never seen an object like this! :D

This time the hardest part was to diversify this from the gold so as not to look like a simple copy and paste, and with a different pattern of highlights and shades I think I succeeded!

Well I’d say we did this in some way too! Now it’s time for wood…

Pixel Study #1 – Isometric Gold Cube

As part of my learning process in pixel art, I’m experimenting with different materials. This time I tried to capture the look of gold, using simple isometric shading to practice light and reflections.

The goal of these studies is not just to create assets, but to build a stronger sense of how light, contrast and color palettes work in pixel art. I use Aseprite (beginner) and just brush, ink and eraser tools.

I wanted to obtain a pleasant and faithful result that recalled gold, with all its reflections and sparkle, but not too complex.

I tried defining the basic palette, starting from one color and choosing the others lighter or darker. I painted the three faces like this to obtain an acceptable shadow, then gradually I enriched it by adding other half tones and highlights.

The biggest difficulties were choosing the halftones for the shadows and the patterns for the highlights.

Gold doesn’t have a rigid pattern, but too chaotic didn’t seem realistic, the real challenge was to balance something that was pleasing to the eye and not too overloaded

I’m very satisfied to be a first attempt!

Next step will be exploring other materials (iron, wood, glass…) and gradually expanding these tests into usable tiles and sprites.

Hello everyone, here’s some news:

I spent the last two days designing the core mechanics of the game on paper, including the combat system, the setting, the tone and the main characters, and Im very enthusiastic about this! Tomorrow the REAL work begins: translating what I have in my head into something playable 💪

I already know that the artistic side will be lacking , but I will do my best to come up with something decent! 😅

In this regard, after having published the latest study of the materials (glass) in the next few days, all the rest of the things that I will publish will be assets of the game.

To keep everything in order, I moved from the devlog all the works that do not concern the game to the comments section, and this will be the case for the entire duration of development: in the comments the artistic part of the assets, in the devlog the part relating to coding and gameplay mechanics.

Let’s begin!

Eternal Light is officially in development. A story about light, bonds, and choices. Updates will be shared here in devlog section.

All of initial material will be temp, with placeholder sprite and asset, until I’ll do them my own.

Now I’m working on my own RPG gameplay structure, basic combat system and core mechanics, stay tuned!
