Can I just link my Steam page to my app's page instead of offering the download here?

There's a couple of reasons for me to want to do this, and the main one is for security. I didn't originally realise how easy it is to buy a game from itch and then just redistribute the files as many times as you like. Obviously there are ways to prevent this through coding in some sort of security protocol that checks the servers if it is a verified user, but I haven't been able to get this work after so long of trying.

In addition to this, it's really useful having all of my statistics in one place for download/sales.

So i wanted to ask if it is possible to have a page for the game here, but to just link to steam for downloads? I noticed that there is a feature to link it to steam anyway, so is it possible to have that as the only form of purchase?

Thanks in advance!

If you just link to Steam, then people won't be able to buy the game here. It doesn't work that way. Otherwise, it's all right. That's why the feature exists, so you have a choice. You can still use your Itch page to host a community, post devlogs and so on.

Okay, but is it possible to sell steam keys on here? If not, that's fine and I'll just do the alternative :)

From what I personally understand (and you should better check the FAQ to be sure) Steam keys are treated as an extra (or “Goodie”). You can give customers Steam keys, but you have to have a product to sell in the first place. After all: Why would anybody in their right mind go to itch.io just to buy a code to get a game on a different store?

Most developers* who sell their game on Steam and on itch.io simultaneously offer a DRM-free version of the game here and add a Steam key to it.

.* That I have checked out myself. If you want a statistic you’d have to write it yourself.

We have a section in our community guidelines about this: https://itch.io/docs/creators/quality-guidelines#avoid-only-uploading-keys-or-links-to-other-stores

Generally we discourage developers from uploading just a link to their Steam page. Empty pages like that would be de-indexed by default so it’s not going to help you get more attention to your project (unless you already have followers that would get notified).

We do understanding that Steam provides online services that we don’t, so in some cases we make exceptions and let people only sell Steam keys. By default though, for a page to be purchasable a file must be uploaded.

I get that. When I saw (for example) Ghost of a Tale in itch.io’s catalogue, I smiled. That smile vanished when I saw that the itch.io publisher only sells pdfs about how to get a key on another platform - instead of offering the actual game (and maybe a key in addition)…

Steam won't prevent piracy. That's how it is. It's easier with files but honestly, don't think about piracy too much, it won't change anything :/
