Version 1.6.0 seems to me to be now a much better version than the first one. Thanks to all the people who made relevant comments and suggestions, the game owes them a lot.
Thank you very much.

*SPOILERS BELOW*

Hello, I am loving the game but I got stuck many more times than I should.

Some things that could maybe be made clearer:

Up the tree next to the moon. I typed RIDE BROOMSTICK and the game says 'It's too far away at the moment.' Does this mean that the moon is too far away? Might want to say 'The moon is too far away at the moment' or 'You feel like you could fly to the moon, but it's too far away at the moment' instead.

If I use the stag head in the desert the stag runs away east and west forever. I know now that this is just for a trophy, but I think it will confuse people, especially as the real solution is so hard to get to.

For the Clock of Time and Space and I think SET CLOCK might be a bit obscure for people.

In the kitchen when the ghost has gone, there is no interactable word for the fire.

The description for the mud says 'You don't need it, and that's too much' Maybe it should say 'You don't need it, and there's too much of it anyway.' Also after digging the mud, I think PUSH MUD should reveal what is in the mud rather than moving it to the other garden space. I think SEARCH MUD is as obscure as PUSH and EXAMINE.

Oh also, I think that TURN COMPUTER is too obscure to use the computer. Also I am not sure if I've failed something by giving the computer a virus. I got a trophy but I guess that makes solving the mirror, the stained glass and the key serve no purpose except the trophy.

I have the following trophies:
Hacker, Backpacker, Hunter, Treasure Hunter, Fisherman
I tried to do the Moonwalker trophy after finding the worm, and I couldn't because finding the worm throws away the shovel.
I am not sure what the Stalker trophy is.

Thank you for making this game, I love it. Though the ending is very sad and grim for an otherwise non-frightening game. Especially as you helped so many ghosts. Perhaps there could be a trophy for having enough sense to leave the area instead of entering the final room!

Thank you for your helpful comments. I'll take your advice.

The source code is available on my GitLab repository. If it amuses you, you can make, and propose modifications (over_here.adv):
https://gitlab.com/auraes/over_here

English is not my native language, and it is difficult for me.
I must review the riddle of the desert gazelle which is not clear and satisfying.
For SET CLOCK, I had suggested TURN CLOCK and SPIN CLOCK as synonyms. What would be the most appropriate verb?
There is no interactive word for fire because it is not useful with the verb-noun parser: LIGHT CANDLE.
For TURN COMPUTER, I had suggested SWITCH COMPUTER and ACCESS COMPUTER as synonyms. What would be the most appropriate verb?
I must review the riddle of the computer which is not clear and satisfying.
For the Stalker's torphy, answer the phone and then type CALL ME.
You no longer need the shovel for the Moonwalker's trophy, but the broom.
You're right about the end of the game, I'll have to revisit all that.

It's an amateur game made by an amateur programmer and game designer. I understand that it can frustrate serious and gifted players.

Thanks.

Host

Hello,

Wonderful for you to make the source code of your game available.

I was scrolling through and I saw that there were some swear words in the game (with ### characters in the middle so they are incomplete).

Without such words I think your game would be great for teachers / students to study but I can't point them to the game with the swear words inside. Are they really necessary to the game?

Chris

Developer

No, they're not necessary. I added a cop yesterday, and I want to give him a little rough language. But I'll take it off.

Developer(+1)

There is a second possible end now, and there have been many improvements. Thanks.

(+1)

Beautiful graphics. I love this style, with big colourful squares! I found it tricky to make progress, but I’m not sure why. Maybe because there were a lot of locked things/areas and I wasn’t sure where to focus my efforts. Overall a lovely entry!

Developer(+1)

I agree with you about the difficulty of the game. I was wondering what was wrong, and you found the right words to say it.

Got to a dead end. I have a candle (can it be lit?), a piece of mirror (no idea what it is for), a stags head (i can use it in desert but the gazelle is faster).

Could someone give hint what to do in some of these places? Thanks.
1.Something to do with the moon. Get it closer but how?
2.Something to catch the fish in open world.
3.The password to PC is HEIIL or i am supposed to quess the upper pixel line as AEIIL/AEIIC/HEIIC? Does not work either.
4.No idea what to do with the flower or  canon.
5.Something is yelling "over here!" at the stairwell and when i listen at the door. But no idea what to do there. I tried to listen, and to say hello/hi.
6.Can't do anything with the spider bro in the cellar :).

Nice idea with the low resolution graphics. It looks simple and cool enough.

Developer (2 edits)

0. Yes, with the fire in the fireplace.
1. Yes, you can bring the moon closer and you will be able to go. Solve preposition 5.
2. Give the fish something.
3. HELLO
4. The flower is a carnivorous plant that eats flies and spiders
5. Look at the picture, there's a dark area; go ahead. (I will correct the answer to the verb Listen in this case; it's an error.)
6. See 4

Developer

3.

Thanks for hints, finished with 12 ghosts and 3 trophies only. The most hardcore features : the hidden doors, that got me good :D. And the lever that i thought would not kill me.. well no undo step so i played it again.

Developer (2 edits)

I may have to suppress that possibility of dying because of the lever. If the player is carrying the ladder, maybe he should be able to come out through the Storeroom with a new trophy, e.g. Survivor trophy. I'll think about that.

The seven trophies:

  1. Hacker's trophy
  2. Gatekeeper's trophy
  3. Fisherman's trophy
  4. Hunter's trophy
  5. Stalker's trophy
  6. Moonwalk's trophy
  7. Treasure Hunter's trophy.
Developer

Maybe I should rename the Hunter's trophy to an Ethology's trophy? It's the one with the desert gazelle.

Developer

I fixed the hidden doors, and it should be easier now.

I'm enjoying the game, but I'm stuck at the moment.  I'm carrying a necklace, a plank, a ladder (in case I need to use it anywhere else!), a stag's head, a candle and a shovel.  I can't find the wood for the chef, the heart of the gazelle (or any gazelle at all), the blue ghost, or the pirate map.  I've buried the footprint but I don't know what that did.  Any hints welcome!

(Btw, I absolutely LOVED the callback to 'Talk To Him About Love'.)

Developer (1 edit)

I assume the wood you're looking for is in the plank.
Use the ladder in the attic.
Take a look at the list of verbs and you'll know how to leave your footprint on the moon.

Submitted

Thanks!

Submitted

Wood and map now sorted thanks to a hint from Christopher, but I'm still stuck on the blue ghost and the gazelle heart.

Developer

If you've played PuckMan, the Blue Ghost is hiding in the Storeroom.

Submitted

Hmm.  I haven't found a storeroom!

Developer

In a nook of the garden.

Submitted

Aha!  Thank you.

Submitted

Finished!  Great game, fab atmosphere.

(1 edit)

I've spent an hour playing this and not really got anywhere. It's confusing, the game story makes no sense (until you start to meet people), then it get a bit clearer. Found one trophy and freed no ghosts. So persevering, but I think it's just me that I'm not 'getting it' - will report back :)

(Graphics seem indistinct in the web browser, or maybe that's intentional. Like the way it tells you specifically which objects can be interacted with)

Developer(+1)

I don't know if you're waiting for an answer, but I don't know what to tell you.

Enjoying playing it, at first it was just plain weird, but now I've solved some things it kind of clicks into place. Enjoying it :) (I wasn't after an answer, just a comment on it and to kinda let you know I'm on it! Great stuff

Developer(+1)

For graphics, play in a small window, otherwise you will only get a blob of pixels.

This REALL|y grew on me. Glad I played it longer than I normally would to review :) Well done

Host

You still considering doing youtube playthroughs of the jam games Richard?

(+1)

Most definitely, just playing through some of them now to get a gauge on what's what. I find it's always better to have an idea of what to expect before a live broadcast, but yes, planning to do some of them live :)

Host

You new instructions message at the beginning of the game should ideally be displayed in the on startup method after clearing the screen (with an additional clear screen after printing the message).

Currently on mobile it pushes the content of the first location off the top of the screen. This is a problem with adventurous scrolling as of this release but it's the one and only place where mobile players will suffer.

Developer

Thank you, I will correct that.

I've now finished it. Great game. It's one of those things where you need to put yourself into the mind of the author and the answers come more easily. I began to get more stuck at the end, and I think part of the reason is that I broke off playing it to test something else and then found it harder to get back into (I make quite rapid progress at first).

It's really inventive and those blocky graphics work very well. One of my favourite entries.

Host

I don't know what to do with the cupboard in the boudoir.

I found the book and used it, but that's the only puzzle I solved so far.

Love the feel of this.

Developer

Close it, it'll open another one somewhere.

Host

Hi,

I think I found a pair of bugs.

If I examine the wardrobe, there is no examine message, it should say something like "The wardrobe is open.".

If I close the wardrove, the image changes (to a closed wardrobe), and the wardrobe disappears from the object list for the room.  I think the wardrobe should remain in the object list, and when I examine it, it should say "The wardrove is closed."

Chris

Developer

Yes, there are missing description messages for some objects.

No, objects disappear from the list when they are no longer useful. It's like that in the whole game.

Host

Got it !

*IGNORE THE THREAD BELOW IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS*

I'm now properly stuck, on 6 out of 12.

I don't know what to do with the map, I can't get into the computer and I can make the gazelle appear...but it runs away.

Will wait and see if anyone else gets further than this!

Developer

The map is for the pirate. Did you get past the armor?

No. I have: token, map, mirror, rag, stag's head. A hint for the armor would help...

Developer

I assume you know where the armor is; wear it.
There's a link to the rag and a chalk message.

Perfect, thanks! I will now carry on.

You have a typo in the object name for aquarium (you have it as aquaruim) that tripped me up.

I'm now stuck on 8 out of 12, with a ghost and a stag's head. How do I catch that damned gazelle!?

Developer

The gazelle will always be faster than you. Forget it and go to the moon!

I'll try that. I've got the moon in proximity but didn't know what to do with it (I even sang to it! To no avail).

Developer

After having chalked away the message "Silence" with the rag, the staircase became talkative; You will find the clock of space and time.

I've done that bit. That's what I meant about the moon: it's now closer but I didn't know what to do with it from there. But I think I know now, so let's see how much further I can get.

Developer

For sure, in the next version, I'll add singing under the moon!
"When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No I won't be afraid
Oh, I won't be afraid ..."

10/12 ghosts: I must be getting close.

What's with the mud? I can shovel it from one place to another, but nothing else is happening with it.

This game is a lot of fun and there is certainly more to it than meets the eye initially. It's bigger than expected at first glance,  and the puzzles are quite satisfying and do make sense more or less (although I'm not sure what was going on with those portraits; whatever it was,  it helped me to progress). Some bits made me laugh (what happens with the plant, for one) and the whole thing has a definite Lewis Carroll surreality to it (enhanced, perhaps, by the slight language barrier - but not much, the English is good overall).

There are some hidden exits around,  and objects seem to appear and disappear occasionally, which is a bit disconcerting until you get used to it, but that's not out of keeping with the whole off-kilter tone of the game. There are also a couple of inputs that are more than two words, which is at odds with what you're told for the rest of the game ('Don't use more than two words please').

Other small errors that I picked up, that could be easily corrected:

- someone is 'thristy' instead of 'thirsty' at one point.

- if you examine some things that are obviously there (eg examine tree when you are in the tree) then you're told '[object] is not here' (eg 'tree is not here') which doesn't make sense.

- the bit with the octopus repeats if you go to the same location. I think you need to set that up so it only happens once.

Other than those, everything seems to work as it should.

Finally - your graphics are great. Well done for producing something that works well at such low resolution.

(And, for the record: I've helped 6 out of 12 ghosts and am now more or less stuck. I am waiting for inspiration to strike.)

Developer

The game was coded quickly and badly, but I decided to offer it anyway (I thought I'd get yelled at for that, but you're kind.)

I think I'm allowed to correct the few errors you pointed out (there must be many more).
You can only interact with the items that follow "Interact with:" and those in your inventory; but I should have pointed it out.

Don't sell yourself short: it is genuinely a good game. I'm a pretty thorough play tester so I'd have picked up anything else that was massively wrong (I don't think there is anything, as far as I got).

I assume that minor corrections are fine. I hope so, as I've spotted lots of little typos here and there in my own game and have corrected them and uploaded a new version of few times. Substantive changes, though, should not be allowed.

Host

Well done Auraes. Seems like you put a LOT of work into this.

Developer

Not really, but it's a good skeleton for a cool little game. I still have a lot of work to do on it, but it will be for a future version. I'll play other people's games, and try to finish them.
