Looking for someone who can create maps for a game

I have a working prototype of a gamified task tracker built in HTML/CSS/JavaScript. The core systems are already functional, including combat and progression.

The combat system is a deckbuilding card game inspired by Slay the Spire, with RPG-style progression tied to real-life task performance (e.g., leveling up increases stats, and task completion affects gameplay).

I’m looking for someone who can design and assemble maps, you don't necessarily have to create the tiles from scratch, you can use tiles you already have or modified versions of them.

You can use existing tilesets (from sources like itch.io), so the focus is on map creation and setup, not asset creation.

What I need:

  • Create a small village-style map that will have a castle, an item shop, and a blacksmith shop
  • Set up basic tile properties (e.g., walkable vs non-walkable areas). This can be done using layers in a tool like SpriteFusion or similar.
  • Export a clean JSON/map file that can be integrated into my project

Style reference:

Classic top-down RPGs such as:

  • Final Fantasy (2D era)
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

Compensation:

  • Paid for the initial map
  • Open to revenue share (percentage) for ongoing collaboration if it’s a good fit

Hi! I specialize in creating detailed RPG style maps and I believe I can bring your village concept to life. I’ve worked on similar projects and have experience with both map creation and setting up tile properties. Could you share any additional preferences regarding the layout or design?

That sounds cool, but I'm gonna have to put a stop to my work. I was working with Claude since I know nothing about coding. But the file size is too large now and so I'm gonna have to recreate the whole thing in an engine like Unity, and learn Unity from scratch. So it's a no-go for now. But thanks for your interest. Maybe in the future, I'll ask for help here again.

Can you use maps build with Tiled?

Yea that looks like the perfect tool for this kind of work, but unfortunately I'm gonna have to stop what I'm doing. I was working with Claude since I know nothing about coding. Hello, I'm an IT professional with knowledge of Javascript, HTML, CSS, Linux, and Cybersecurity, as well as some database experience. I'm interested in joining your team.

I'm The Chromatic, Dragon Egg Studio's lead 2D/3D artist. The 16-bit RPG register you're after — Final Fantasy, A Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, Pokémon FireRed — is exactly the visual language I work in, and a small village build with a castle, shop, and blacksmith is a clean, scoped piece of work I'd be glad to take on for the initial paid map.

Map design and tile setup is in my lane. I'm comfortable working from existing tilesets like the ones on itch.io to keep your budget tight, or building custom tiles where the available ones don't quite fit the village you have in mind. I can deliver in SpriteFusion, Tiled, or whatever editor you prefer — walkable/non-walkable layers configured cleanly, and a clean exported JSON that drops into your Unity migration without re-authoring. The studio behind Temple Run 2 backs me up if scope grows.

You'd be hiring me — not the whole party. I'd be your single point of contact, see this map through to completion, and won't be swapped for another artist without your knowledge and consent. The studio's senior team sits behind me as a safety net, not a competing priority on your project — meaning when an edge case comes up (collision quirks, layer boundaries, atlas optimization for the Unity build), I have peers to consult without expanding your contract.

A few quick scope questions before I quote: tile size and overall canvas dimensions, whether the castle/shop/blacksmith need interiors or just exteriors for the village pass, and which editor you'd like the source file delivered in. Once those are clear I can put a flat in front of you.

Ready to talk scope and timeline whenever you are.
