20 seconds total or 20-second parts?

Hello all. We are just starting development and we want to clarify if what we have in mind does not violate the rules. We want to make a game that consist of several 20-second parts. On the jam page, it says that it's fine to do that, as long as items or progress does not carry over, but in our case, those 20-second levels move the overall plot forward. The levels are sort of connected (there is no inventory, so literal stuff does not carry over, but the progression does). Is this allowed, or do the 20-second levels have to be absolutely separate? Thank you!

hi, TG. i believe the Hosts will agree that we've seen plenty of games in past 20 Second Game Jams that do exactly what you're planning but might seek some clarity; Story progression, level Unlocks, more Bosses to battle, etc, are all fine (and welcome) so long as each is capped at 20 Seconds and nothing is carried over to the next beyond the plot and flavor you plan on adding to the pot :)

I have a similar question, you kind of answered it virtual nomad but I want to be extra clear. If my game is composed of many 20 second levels and nothing carries over from level to level except what you the player have learned (maybe you learn how to open a gate in level 1 and without that knowledge you cant complete level 2) is that in the spirit of the rules? i was thinking of doing something where you are knowledge gated - so in later 20 second levels, you need some knowledge you learned in an earlier 20 second level, but I'm not sure if that counts as 'learned skills' and is within the spirit. Any thoughts?

Knowledge gates are absolutely fine. When we talk about "learned skills", we're really talking about abilities that your character acquires along the way, not the player, who will most likely get better at the game with each play through anyway.

so, i went back thru and looked for games that i believed carried plot into subsequent plays and couldn't find that so now i'm doubting my response above. i know carrying knowledge into the next play has been done but since my own games stay very strictly to a 20" notion that carries zero over from previous plays, i better stay away from any deviation from that in my responses. i'll see if i can wave a host here for an official response. they are very good about responding here and on discord but must have missed this thread. sorry to perhaps be misleading above :/

Thanks for holding down the fort VN!

No worries, I went back through the previous jam and found this: https://itch.io/jam/20-second-game-jam-2024/topic/4276114/can-there-be-multiple-...

We discourage progression between games/levels because it stops being a 20 second game and becomes something much longer

I would interpret this to mean that the entire game experience is meant to be contained in those 20 seconds and that a longer multi-level game would be outside the spirit of the jam. But likely not disqualified.

Host

Multi-level is ok. It's only progression between levels that we discourage (for the reasons you quoted). In the first jam we didn't allow multiple levels at all but we decided to allow it later because people really, really wanted to make them (and did anyway).

Host

Hi TurtleGhost. It is definitely allowed to have multiple levels in your game. We encourage you to make each level a self-contained, like a stand-alone 20 second game. If you are not carrying over items or abilities and your levels could be played in any order without it making a difference, then that's close enough to the spirit of the jam. Having a narrative that continues from level to level does make it more like a longer game played in 20 second installments. Having said that, we like to give advice about what we think is in the spirit of the jam but we accept all games that clearly engage with the 20 second constraint and we don't disqualify games for different interpretations.
