This was an intriguing small story with a well-executed twist! This is maybe a weird pull but it reminded me of the folk song Lady Isabel and the Elf Knight.

I would like to suggest, though, that you use paragraph breaks instead of single line breaks. Some passages were really not easy to parse visually, especially once I started expanding text.

I’ll use paragraph breaks in the postcomp version. Thanks for the suggestion!

this could be the end of everything...

…so why don’t we go somewhere only we know

I really like the perspective of this game being written in second person and that the player plays a passive role as they learn more about the relationship and their part in it. Without causing spoilers, I found it interesting that the player isn't the hero of this story.

I also like the structure of the narrative and how we can only unlock sections of the story near the end of the game.

A really unique and haunting game, nice work!

The Story: A simple story of love and betrayal. If things had gone differently, would the end have been the same? Perhaps some things are inevitable.

The Game: I had a couple of bugs with the progress feature, where it took me to a passage I’d seen, but the links then led to blank screens. The restart also didn’t work, after pressing it and then continue, I ended up at the ending screen again. I had a peek at the code and it should win an extra prize for complexity :D

Thanks for the feedback! In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have put the main part of the game into only two passages, using the visit count to display different parts of the present storyline (given how that seems to have broken the progress feature). Also, in hindsight, I probably should’ve implemented the continue button differently (as Harlowe’s restart button turns out to have a bug where it doesn’t actually restart the game from the beginning if the (save-game:) and (load-game:) macros were used).
