Description
This is the soundtrack to the game Palace of Dreams, an imaginary PS1 puzzle exploration game. Think Resident Evil with a bit less stress and horror, and more of a weird psychedelic atmosphere. As opposed to some PS1 games that use sequenced music, this would be a CD based soundtrack.
The theme of the jam I chose is One Summer Night - the first thing that came to mind for me was those horrible, hot, sweaty nights where you just can't get to sleep and how you end up a bit delirious. The idea for the game came from that.
I thought it would be cool to have a Resident Evil style game set in a building with a sort of Middle Eastern/Egyptian style of architecture (leading on from the One Summer Night theme). Lots of domes, high arched ceilings, creepy wall art etc. The game is set in a huge palace with this style, with areas that need to be unlocked throughout the course of the game. It is populated by enigmatic NPCs (like Dark Souls ones, they are sometimes a bit off-putting but very memorable). There are enemies in some areas that can be killed using simple melee combat, but the focus is really on exploration and atmosphere.
TRACKS:
1. Palace of Dreams (Title Screen) - You can see my title screen idea on the cover art for this submission, and I thought it needed something simple and stripped back, so I made this. The piano is the Addictive Keys Studio Grand from XLN Audio which I got for free (I think from my Novation keyboard), and I really like the sound of it.
2. Summer Night - To open the game, you are trying to get to sleep but are struggling because it's so hot! This was the first song I made after I thought of the idea for the game. That noise is meant to be a fan on full blast next to the bed, because I wanted the listener to be immersed. The strings here mark the first appearance of the Native Instruments Symphony Series which I recently got for about £90 in a sale (they are meant to be £899 in total!). They are really, really good, and I use them all over this soundtrack.
3. Enter the Palace - You suddenly realise that you must have fallen asleep because you find yourself in your bed but in a different, strangely decorated room with sand all over the floor! This song plays as you begin to explore the rooms and quickly branching hallways around you. Most of the instruments here are from this website which I can't remember how I found and is full of loads of really cool sounds.
4. Vast Hall - Suddenly you stumble into a huge hall with grand architecture and this piece starts playing! This is a sort of hub for the palace, lots of areas intersect here. You can hear the free Percussion instrument from Spitfire Audio here, another favourite of mine.
5. Domed Glasshouse - As you keep exploring you end up in a giant domed greenhouse, full of strange and wonderful plants. You can see lots of swirling fog and colour through the glass. Fun fact, I improvised the piano part at the end first try with some minor tweaks to fix a few timing mistakes!
6. Passageways - This song plays in tight passageways found throughout the palace. I'm actually really happy with this one! I added the voice sample the day after making the rest of the track and miraculously it was at the right pitch already.
7. Dreaming Merchant - A recurring NPC that sells goods throughout the palace, similar to the merchants in Elden Ring. I thought it would be cool if they were playing this song diegetically on a handpan (which is what the excellent instrument I used here by Quilcom is meant to emulate).
8. Rooftop View of the Dream Fields - After exploring for a while you find yourself on the roof of the palace, with a view across the infinite fields of dreams. The weird wind noise here is just your bog standard noise with some automated filters on it, put through a saturator to distort it.
9. Ancient Foundations - The NPCs hint at a way of returning to your world, which can be found deep below the palace. This song plays as you descend into the palace's foundations. I'm also very happy with this one, it's a bit out of my comfort zone with all of the dissonance but I am always trying to push myself.
10. Ancient Foundations (Near the Heart) - Deep underground you begin to hear what sounds like a huge heart! This must be the key to escaping this world.
11. Palace Heart - As you stand before the palace's very heart you feel its pulse radiate through your entire being.
12. Dawn Chorus - You close your eyes and plead with the palace to return to your own world. Its intentions are incomprehensible, but the heartbeat seems to quicken. You can feel your body being shredded into a million pieces as the sound envelops your soul...! Then you find yourself back in your bedroom drenched in sweat, the birds outside singing their dawn chorus as if to herald your return to reality. THE END! (Now for some information! The really loud part has a reversed, stretched and pitched up snippet of Summer Night, and the second part is just the title theme with some extra instrumentation).

I'm impressed by the depth of narrative in this OST, especially for the short time! There's some really immersive tracks in here.
Thank you!
Great job with this OST! It's so atmospheric and immersive, could totally imagine this in the game you describe. I honestly love the whole thing, but if I had to choose a few favorites, I'm a big fan of the title theme and how it comes back at the end, plus "Passageways", it's such a nice track! This OST's vibe kind of reminded me of Ib's soundtrack, it has a similar haunting beauty interspersed with an oppressive darkness at times. Awesome work, and thanks for sharing!
Thank you! I haven't heard of Ib, I might have to give its soundtrack a listen.
Love that you drew some inspiration from Resident Evil when creating this, it's one of my favorite games I played as of last year, mainly cause of that puzzle element to the games. This is definitely very fitting music for a world exploring puzzle game. Great variety and consistent quality between the tracks, very well done!
Thank you!
Very unique OST with a lot of great content, pretty impressive !
It really capture that 90s horror point'n click vibe of games like D, Phantamasgoria or Clock Tower with the mood and instruments chosen (and with the great cover also, the logo's texture reminds me of the one from Illbleed too).
I quite enjoyed the story told through the variety and quantity of the tracks, you can easily imagine a bunch of different sceneries in 3D prerendered environments with it, you have done quite a good job on the setpieces !
My favourite of the bunch has to be Passageways, with the voice lines and the bells it feels very haunting and memorable, I liked it a lot !
Maybe with the concept of your game I could have expected the music quality to be a bit more lo-fi (like it was the ripped soundtrack of a game from this period) but having music sound good and not being overly compressed is an understandable motive.
Excellent soundtrack, congrats for your work !
Wow you are spot on with those influences! I've been watching quite a few videos about old horror games leading up to the jam, including D and all the Clock Tower games, so I thought I might as well try to bring some of that stuff into my entry. I think you would be surprised by the audio quality you hear in some PS1 games that make use of the CD technology for their soundtracks, but yes I get what you mean, maybe I could have tried to make it a bit more obvious that I was going for an older aesthetic. Anyway, thank you for the kind words!
love the haunting ps1 puzzle vibe. every track paints that weird, dreamy atmosphere so well. awesome job man
Thank you so much!
This is great! Totally had me immersed into the puzzle exploration world you described, as well as CD-ROM point and click adventure vibes! I really like how every track served a purpose and contributed to the larger story, while simultaneously developing the world's atmosphere. The only thing I might like to see would be a slightly more universal loudness among the tracks (i use YouLean Loudness Meter for this, personally) Excellent work!
Thank you! Yes I get what you mean about the loudness, listening to other submissions I can now see that I needed to make mine louder but I didn't realise when I had spent a week only listening to my tracks. I will definitely give that plugin a go!
Wow, this is good! Your vision for the game is super well translated into the music and it all has a really immersive atmosphere. The overall soundtrack has a cool progression to it that I feel would fit an actual exploration game quite well. I also really appreciate that you kept each track simple enough to let its strengths shine and build a unique feel! My favorite part was the return to the title theme in Dawn Chorus.
Also thanks for linking the sample website :)
Thank you! I was trying to focus on creating immersion this jam so it's good that it seems to have worked.
YO THIS IS REALLY GOOD SUBMISSION MAN. It's so creative! Tracks like Dawn Chorus really keep you on the edge of your seat. DREAMING MERCHANT, DOMED GLASSHOUSE, PASSAGEWAYS, AND ROOFTOP VIEWS ARE SO GOOD. You should really consider releasing this on SoundCloud man! I would love to add some of these to my playlist. Really good work man!
Thank you for such kind words! I have good news for you, it's on SoundCloud here!
Thank you, I didn't see the link the first time lol.
this is really cool! the instrumentation on some tracks hit really hard, like Domed Glasshouse which sounds like a night theme from zelda (lol), and that piano at the end... ; Vast Hall has an amazing chord progression that i freaking admire and sick instrumentation. Passageways is also an incredible track, and that vocal sample fits so well with the rest of the song
Thank you so much! I'm really happy with the chords on Vast Hall so I'm glad you like them too.
You created a very haunting atmosphere in this OST. The ambient pieces are really well crafted, and the more melodic ones stood out to me as well. My favorite was the Title Screen, cool chord progression in there! Passageways was very interesting too, is that an Erhu playing the melody? Really nice job!
Thank you! The melody in Passageways is actually a vocal sample I got from downloading the free Etherealwinds Harp II: Community Edition sample pack which I chopped up and pitched around. You're right though, it does sound a bit like an erhu!
Where is the resident evil basement theme reference? How can it be a PS1 horror game without the basement song!?
More ambient style music isn't really my jam but I like that the tracks all feel pretty distinct and there are some cool melodic bits like in ancient foundation in particular.
Thanks, I'm glad you like the melodic parts in Ancient Foundations, I was experimenting with more dissonance than I'm used to with that one so I didn't know if people would like it, but it seems to have paid off. I was trying to go for a dreamlike atmosphere for the game so I deliberately tried to make some of the tracks less melodic, but maybe that's a bad idea for a composing competition on second thought...
And yes I did make a grave mistake by forgetting to add a song where the only instrument is a fart sample!!
