Clarification about the theme Sticky

We have seen some confusion surrounding the theme both here and in the Brackeys Community Discord server.

I understand this confusion may largely be due to a language barrier. To clarify, “risk it for the biscuit” is an English idiom meaning to take a risk for the chance at a reward.

This could be anything. It could be as mundane as applying for a job; your risk is rejection and the reward is a high-paying position were you to be accepted. You risked it (potential rejection) for the biscuit (a job).

Having literal biscuits in your game is not required, the theme is intentionally vague so as to give everyone creative freedom. If your game incorporates risk / reward in some way, you are still aligned with the theme.

But of course, if you wish to include literal biscuits / cookies, this is fine too!

I wish everyone success in your creations, have fun!

It's better not to worry about the literal, technical definition.  That way, the phrase is open to interpretation, which makes for more interesting ideas.

For example, the word biscuit came from Latin and meant cook twice.  So, maybe make a game about taking risks with cooking.

don't worry, it is ok to take the theme litteraly

Alright. I was starting to worry that my horror game doesn't have any cookies. But just in case, I'll add one anyway :)

I literally thought you guys made up this phrase for the Game Jam. English is my first language and I’ve never heard this idiom before in my life. 😅

I made a buying and selling game where you need to buy low and sell high to take a gamble. Does that count?

Sounds like it does to me.  Also when people vote on your game they get to decide how much they think it fits.

russian roulette counts for shure (not all there is to my game but dont have any cookies)

LOL I made my reward a biscuit and my enemies cookies just to learn it's an idiom

Is it ok if mine is about risking your life for a biscuit?

Submitted

Yeah! It still works for the idiom imo! We also used biscuits in the literal sense just because we wanted to :)

I bad at English and I'm using a translator. I took the topic literally. Will it be considered that my game is in line with the topic if it involves taking risks for biscuits?

sounds good to me, it's okay to take the theme litteraly,if it has risks for rewards i think it's under the theme

Well too late, I'm already all-in in taking the theme literally by making a biscuit-themed game based on "Risk" hahaha

As an english speaker, I knew this and still made a game about biscuits anyway! Lol! (:

Same!

I think our game take it in both senses!
And made a great job having Real Biscuit on top of extremely Risky Coin Toss Mechanics!
