How did you incorporate the given theme in your game?
I had a couple of ideas such as a clothing collecting game or photographing animals but this one seemed most fun. You have to collect 20 flowers in a forest as part of the job of a flower scout in a new area. It has a focus on where-is-waldo sort of mechanic of searching in pictures along with a double-verification mechanic (a little like Obra Dinn) to disincentivize spamming.

Love the nature vibes and music used! Unfortunately I seem to be in the odd group out whose ui tabs weren't working to pull up what was needed to progress the game, but from what I could see of it, it looked lovely and I always enjoy a good moment to stop and right click smell the roses.

Really lovely game, I think to improve it would be useful to have the check flower button on the screen as you had to click through lots of pages to get back and forward. Great job!

Developer

Thank you! And thanks for playing it.

Thank you so much for the hints lol I was losing my mind trying to get the last two (cave and 6-petal) until I found the hints.

I really enjoyed the concept and the double-verification mechanic, I did have to go back to "recenter" some pictures and then recheck again though, the area could be just a bit more generous.

Going into the menu and then clicking the compare option is a bit clunky but it's not an issue here as there are relatively few pairs. I was keeping good track but it would be helpful if it told you when one was an "used flower" or when it just didn't detect a flower on screen.

The menus were also on the same side as the itch overlay which was a bit rough a few clicks. Also after I clicked one of the menus the whole screen got messed up with red overmask and made me have to refresh, assume it was a bug?

The fact that you can cross-reference flowers from different areas makes it more fun to explore as well, I found it intuitive but I can see from the comments not everyone thought of that at first.

Great visuals! And the tune was great but the loop could be a bit longer.  SFX  were great. Also how dare you put that as the credits song lol

Fun time! Fantastic concept and I really liked moving around.

Red Mask in question,  it stayed across screen and menus.

Developer

Thanks for playing and giving feedback! The UI buttons did go awkwardly with the itch.io buttons but noticed that too late unfortunately (definitely learning experience for next time though). Saw your screenshot with the red overlay, that's really bizarre, have been trying to replicate it by clicking but can't so far so I'm hoping it's just a quirk that won't happen too often. Really glad you had fun!

Hey! Quick update because I managed to replicate: It happened to me when highlighting the game viewport on the itch page, clicking outside the game 4-5 times fixed it for me but it's probably an itch glitch hence why I couldn't solve it in-game earlier. Updating to not worry you about a false report!!! (unintentional hard mode unlocked)
Thank you for the reply and for the effort into the game <3

Oh that is good to know! Had the same thing occur to me in another game after I read your post so glad to know it wasn't specific to mine.

I enjoyed how thoughtful the gameplay felt like it really rewarded looking deeply and analyzing. Wish there had been a hint for the butterfly flower cause I was looking like crazy for  maybe halved flowers then slightly odd shapes in the sky and dirt at some points before I just got lucky and put the cursor on the cave then noticed there was a flower in my viewfinder?! That was so clever I wish I had done it on purpose lol!

The UI was a little clunky here and there but I loveed the gameplay so much

Developer

Thanks for playing! Oh there was a hint for the butterfly but I didn't set it correctly so it would always show, I'm fixing it in an update soon. Glad you still stumbled upon it somehow! Appreciate the feedback truly.

I didn't really get how the two-camera mode worked until I was on the final two flowers and realized I could take photos of different places

Developer

Yeah, I'm realizing I didn't convey that quite well enough in my tutorial! Thanks for checking it out though

I got stuck on the last two flowers when I first played this last night, and came back to it today determined to complete my flower book, which I did after a lot of time! Yay!

It took me some thinking to first realize that both images needed to be of legitimate flowers that were new, so that it wasn't possible to unlock the thousand-petal daisy unless I also found the butterfly flower. The flower checking mechanic was explained in the tutorial but because it's such a new and unintuitive mechanic to me I still didn't expect it to work like it did, and it was frustrating when I was sure of a new flower but it wasn't finding it because I didn't have a second new one to pair it with.

I think the mechanic would have become more intuitive if after flower checking you could click straight to the flower book with a highlight on the new flowers, so you could see that you'd added two different ones and which ones those were. Navigating out to the main menu, back into an area, and then to the flower book, felt clunky every time and by the time I got there I'd forgotten what was new. Especially early on when I was unsure whether every variation of the sprites counted as a different kind of flower, as with the different petaled daisies.

It also might have helped if when the flower checking failed it gave a reason, letting you know something like "One of these flowers is a 3-petaled daisy. That's already in your flowerdex!" or something like that.

There was no hint for the butterfly flower, and I don't know whether that was because the thousand petal daisy was required to unlock the hint and I was unlucky in leaving those two for last, or whether it was meant to be a mystery, or whether it's a bug.

Then I realized it's possible to have the photos be in two different areas, which opened up all four areas as potential hiding places for the butterfly flower. I took a long time to be sure I wasn't missing anything, and then I put on my lateral thinking hat to consider what a game developer might do for a last, secret, special flower given the mechanics available. I tried a few things before I thought of the mechanic you used, but once I thought of it I was sure that's what you'd done. The first places I checked were the areas above other flowers, and areas of open sky, because that's where butterflies would be. But then I thought you probably wouldn't hide it randomly, so it had to be somewhere special, and that cave had been waiting around unused. And the cave was also conveniently behind the photo UI, so you wouldn't be able to find it just by clicking around randomly while looking at the images, and the game had already shown itself to not want to reward random clicking.

So... I got there in the end. But I do feel a little like that extra difficult flower came out of nowhere, and I wouldn't expect any but the most unreasonably stubborn player to find it.

I did like the game though, especially the sound design, as it made it more pleasant to spend time playing.

Developer

woops accidentally deleted my reply somehow! But thanks so much for the elaborate and very detailed feedback, I really appreciate it a lot! I feel bad for not implementing some of the things you mentioned and also that the tutorial fell short. Glad the sound design was good enough to carry you along though! I'll see of I can fix some of these things on short notice since I'm seeing some clear repeat mention of a couple of things that I missed during development

I enjoyed finding new flowers by reading the hints. At first I didn't realise that moving to a new screen still keeps my cursor locked in the previous environment. Also liked how you had to pick two different flowers to stop the spamming. However, I did  wish the game was clear if you picked a flower you had already picked before. I found going back to the main menu and the UI flow a little clunky for a game that relies on it.  The flowers and hiding spots were creative and fun. I liked the cave hint and ended up finding all flowers!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, reading some the comments I realize I didn't explain some of the mechanics well enough haha. Glad you enjoyed it other than that and found all of them!

This game is very cozy and very well made, i love how there is multiple variants of a flower which makes it a pretty good hiding spot, i love how it disincentivize spamming by needing to go back to main menu, just sometimes i tried checking for a flower and its not working, like the 3 petal daisy, i dont know if i had made some mistake but i gotta admit, the hiding spot for some flowers are very creative, anyway greatwork and great job making the game :>

Developer

Thanks for the comment! I'll check the 3-daisy, might have missed something in implementing it. Appreciate the positive words :)

A fun and unique photography game. It was fun finding all the different flowers, and the art was nice and pleasant to look at. The only thing that wasn't clear was that I needed BOTH circles on a new flower. I thought as long as at least one new flower was photographed I'd get credit for it. Still a great game!

Developer

Oh you are right, reading feedback I realize I didn't explain some of the mechanics well enough in the game. Glad you enjoyed it otherwise.

I like the cozy atmosphere and the unique idea with collecting flowers.

I enjoyed playing this game and I love the visuals! Only thing is it got repetitive having to go back to the main menu to check the flowers, maybe it would be better to have it as its own tab :) Overall really nice job!!

Developer

Really good point, I wanted to do that initially but ran out of time. Appreciate the comment!
