Takes on AI (respectful discussion please)

How does the use of AI affect how you personally rate the graphics/artwork of a game? Regardless if it looks good or bad, how does the use of AI affect your ratings?

I'm personally not using or siding with generative AI work, no matter to what degree a person prompt engineered, or  "was a part of the creative writing process", But generally I'm more chill if someone just needed a quick thumbnail, and the game itself contains real art. Open for respectful discussion and different takes. Good luck to all jammers!

In my opinion, I feel like AI art deters a lot of people from playing a game. Even if the game is really good, if the first thing a person sees about a game is an AI cover, the person would probably not play it. That being said, I feel like you can use AI effectively in making a cover. Maybe use AI for parts of a cover instead of the whole thing.

As for AI generated art in-game, that's basically the same as using an asset pack, only difference is that you don't have to give credit.

That's a good point!

I didn’t saw anyone using AI on the game (at least it wasnt obvious)) Only noticed that some people were using on thumbnail

So I’m indiferent I guess

I dislike AI generated images in general as they look kind of fake and it wouldn’t feel as original for people to use those. I drew all the pictures assets and everything for my game. (I also kind of avoid Ai generated thumbnails.

My opinion on them goes -99% if they use Ai for art. It's unethical, lazy, bad for the enviroment and only hurts creative people that put effort into their craft.

If you can't draw, sit and learn, buy assets, or hire someone to do your art.

AI won’t really affect my illustrator side, since my art is mid and nobody was going to buy it anyway. But there are artists out there with real talent who’ve been honing their skills for years, and it’s a shame to see them getting replaced like that, especially when their income and daily life are on the line.

aside from any personal preferences, such as it looking very cheap, and quite often resulting in visually incoerent games, it really prevents people from improving as artists, it creates this weird myth that art is this inaccessible skill, which is really untrue, some basic understanding of shape theory, and what colours work together and you could really make something truly unique and special.

It's a shortcut that if more people were to take, we would have a lot less visually distinctive and fun games.

ai is a tool alright, just one that in my opinion hinders future growth as a game dev/ artist and in the long run severely limits yourself

I used AI in my game production.

Balance is the key. Too much, your brain will rust. Too little, you're not productive.

Take a vehicle for example. You need one, directly or indirectly, to live in today's world. But at the same time you need your daily steps to stay healthy. Balance.

As for ratings, I suggest you go by your heart ❤️. That's the beauty of being human, right? We're all different. Different thumbprints, at least. We all judge differently. Just listen to your heart.

I understand the concerns about AI-generated art, and I respect different viewpoints. As a solo developer, I used AI as a tool to optimize my time, ensuring I could release my game within the deadline. However, AI-generated art is not as effortless as some may think—many elements need to be adapted and refined to meet professional standards. I made significant edits to ensure the visuals aligned with my vision for the game. In the end, AI was an essential tool in my workflow, but creativity and manual adjustments remained a core part of the process.

I generally don't throw shade at the use of AI. It's still a tool. If it's good, it's good. I will give more grace to obviously self-drawn art and creativity tho. Since this is a jam and we should definitely rate based on the design and what they were going for, not just polish.
