I get Over the Garden Wall vibes from this which is awesome. Excited to see what this becomes!
It was a major touchstone for me!
despite the current state of things, I think the concepts in here are pretty great. I was able to get pulled in to the scene from your hook, and I'm pretty excited to see where you take it. Feels like a Souls-esque game, which, "more please!" I could see the number of lanterns extinguished increasing the chance of the woodsman finding the players, but also providing information on the trick or changing the woodsman in some way that creates a more dire and unexpected encounter.
As you know from my last submission, I'm a sucker for procedurally generated tools, and this looks like it could be super fun to use. Keep pushing, the shape of it rn now is intriguing and I'm sure it will be awesome once you get the time to finish.
I hope you're well.
Thanks! Appreciate the feedback. I still want to make a Ruined Spaces generator but finding the time to do things feels impossible these days.
geez. You’re tellin me.
idk if it's in the spirit to rate this but since you want feedback: a promising start and a good idea, I think this could end up a very useful resource for a lot of new guides. The base rules describe the fog evocatively but don't provide much mechanically, so I'm sure there's a lot of guides (esp. those coming from games with fleshed out exploration rules) who are already wishing they had something like this.
I'd echo the dice thing though: I'm one of those people who'd prefer to stick to the game's base dice so if there's a way to turn those tables into d5/d10/d100s that'd be a plus in my book.
Overall big encouragement to continue and finish
Thanks! I'm hearing the dice notes but I'm not sure how to easily map it into that system...I could make everything d5s/10s (d100 tables seem too big for a trifold) but then you have to stop to roll more instead of mapping unique dice to their own tables. I'm open to suggestions though
I'll split my comments for the foundations of what you've laid out (congrats on submitting what you have instead of DNF'ing!) into premise + the generator.
Premise: Great start for a spooky, looming entity. I found myself a little curious about the death masks, which I'm sure illustrations will help with. I will caution that you may need more space than what you have set aside currently, to fully flesh out a lantern extinguishing mechanic, plus a statblock, plus an escalation mechanic.
Generator: I can appreciate using multiple polyhedral dice that most people generally have, but with Fatherfog as the base-frame, I encourage you to use tables with 5-lines, 10-lines, or 100-brief phrases (1d10 halved for 1d5, 1d10, and 1d100) . I like what you have for weather and terrain, and both could convert to a 1d5 roll.
Thanks for your feedback! And yea, I could see this running on a bit beyond a trifold, we'll see what happens.
WIP status aside the desire to make a resource for random generation is appreciated.
I hope it's useful!
