I'm a big fan of how this plays like classic Castlevania but with less clunkiness; I think everything fits together really well. Complete audio and visuals, little bit of challenge but not too hard, and doesn't end too quickly or drag out too long.

Especially doing this solo? Great work

The disclaimer on the game page made me worried when I start the game, but man this game is actually playable with no problem, at least on my end. There's something that bugs me though. In the first stage, I managed to walk outside of the screen and it act like a shortcut. Not sure if that was intentional or not.

I streamed the game here around minute 2 if anyone wants to watch:

Great job with the game! Love the graphics!

Lovely coupling of Castlevania and HRtP! I know some folks don't like the strict physics, but thats what makes it feel so Castlevania-esc, so I'm all for it!

Would really love to see a full game of this, maybe like a remake of EoSD?

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm actually working on expanding the game a bit, my goal is to have about 4-5 levels and maybe another boss. I can't guarantee anything though :).

The pixel art style is certainly the highlight of this game - you captured the Castlevania/retro platformer style really well!

Gameplay-wise, while the constrained physics and lack of midair turning/attacking was hard to get used to, I did have a fun time with it. The first level unironically felt like the hardest one, haha.

Developer

Thank you! I'm definitely going to add midair turning, you're not the first to complain about that. The game is a bit on the difficult side, considering how short it is. Glad the art turned out OK (I'm not really an artist).

ah yes, my favorite touhou enemy, slime and bat. does have the pc98 bullet spawning though thats pretty neat

physics are a bit restrictive but fit the style well, the spritework is antique and i really like reimu and remilia in particular.  whacking things is pretty good

Developer

Thanks a lot for playing and commenting! Actually, the "slimes" were supposed to resemble kedamas, but they probably don't look fluffy enough... (Touhou enemy variety in general isn't that great, it's all fairies and various kinds of orbs to my knowledge.) Glad you like the reimu sprite, I'm somewhat proud of that one.

Reimu needs more control midair. The pit in the first level, a particular ledge she has to climb to in the second (with a block directly on top of her that stops her vertical movement and sends her to the bottom floor), and how she cannot turn to attack midair make for a somewhat frustrating experience.

Might just be me being bad at platformers.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your feedback! What pit and what ledge are you talking about specifically? I will most likely redo the levels after voting has ended, so knowing where the problematic parts are helps me out. The mid-air turning is on my list of things to fix. The restricted midair control is by design though (it's Castlevania-inspired after all).

This is good. I enjoyed the somewhat constrain physics and I think the difficulty and level design was appropriate. The bottomless pit in the first level took me like two tries, but after getting past that, I made it all the way to Remilia until I died again. On my 2nd run that got past stage 1, I got a 1CC.

Very fair difficulty that manages to rewards patience without feeling like you're forced to play passively. You did a great job capturing the classic Castlevania feel while sprinkling in some more bullets for show. Also, the music is excellent and the pixel art looks authentic.

Thanks very much for the comprehensive feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed the game! It's good to hear the difficulty and slow pacing worked out for you, as the level design is a bit rushed. I definitely spent too much time on music and art.

It reminds me of retro games that fit with Castlevania's theme, and I like the concept of having constraints with the jump and attack.

It definitely delivers the halloween vibe!

Developer

Thank you! That's exactly what I was hoping for :-).

Had a really good time with this one! I was impressed by how much content you managed to fit within three days, and the boss fight especially felt reminiscent of the era.

Developer

Thanks a lot! I'm glad the boss turned out well! The scope was almost too much though.
