Had fun with this one once I "got it"!For some of the puzzles I wished I could move the camera in addition to panning and zooming. Great job!
Fairly easy to figure out what's going on when starting -- the graph at the bottom really helps with that. Had some difficulty with final instrument (if it was turn-based, I'm sure I would have done better...).
I loved it but I loved it more unstructured as a puzzle game in the first few stage rather than playing on time to another composition. Which is to say playing with physics and noise entertains me a great deal. Im not sure if your choice of background structure is helping or hurting you. I also tried to break it a number of ways and it did not fail, so that was pretty cool. This game gives me a lot of ideas and its a lot of fun so thanks for that!
Glad you liked it! Initially I wasn't going to make it a rhythm game at the end, but rather an animation/music video in a similar vein to "Pipe Dream" from Animusic or "Marble Machine" by Wintergatan. However, time was low and I couldn't make anything interesting for the instrument to play so I decided to end it with a rhythm game instead.
But a more unstructured and open sandbox approach sounds really interesting! I could see it being like a 3D version of Hanenbow from Electroplankton (DS)!
Im a musician, and also fall heavy into the 'exploratory' playtype, so perhaps it was natural for me to try to use it like an instrument. I remember Electroplankton, tho my favourite was the Korg DS1 cart which I used extensively for many years in recordings. I remember Wintergatan composition as well, tho for me it reminded of the `Ferris Bueller` intro scene. With BouncyCatchy I found it interesting to trap the marble to get very quick triggers (the dot chart at the bottom turning into a line) or use indirect reflections from the edges to force the marble to travel in different ways. It was very deep and rich interaction that could be lost in a more formal structure. Like, really the *emergent* play of this game could be SO strong, like Minecraft-level. Also I can see the benefit of minimizing 3d movement, I found it extremely intuitive coming in blind largely as the result of being fixed to the two axes of movement, that was a very clever and an invisible sort of interface development. It might be interesting to play with the compass widget for a scaling difficulty, multiple marble 'voices', multiplayer coop mode, or adding a special trigger that causes a chaotic waterfall of marbles.. you know, for funsies!
This is revolutionary tbh
Sometimes it’s a fine line between a game and a toy. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an entry like this before!
So fun that I nearly forgot about all my frustration as I played through it... and the easter egg at the end (I won't spoil) made me actually laugh out loud.
Your submissions are always impressive, but this one takes the cake. Took me until the end to realize what I was building.
My major gripe is the difficulty upon entry. I chose the wrong axis to move everything by, and it turned what was probably an easy level into one where all my timings were off by a lot. I was mad because I liked the cool beat I made, but then I had to ruin it to get within the proper timings. For some reason, the first level also forced me to get near 100% centered on all 4 dots before it would advance me forward. Also took me longer than I'd like to admit, that I needed to click then drag, instead of holding down the mouse button and immediately dragging.
However as soon as I adjusted my behavior into what the game expected, I was taken on a pleasant, well thought out journey, where I was delighted by what *I* made at the end. Masterfully designed and evoked a lot out of me for a work of art made in 10 days. The ending reminded me a lot of playing Parappa as a kid. Thank you!
Thank you! I'm happy someone liked my silly ending 😄
In the first level, did you hold your mouse down to make small adjustments while it was playing? I made it such that it only advances if you don't touch anything for the entire bar in case you slip the panel away the very last second. Though later on I made it such that the panels would align themselves after the level was cleared, so now that I think about it that safety check doesn't make sense anymore and I should remove it.
The camera controls could definitely be made easier to use. The current controls were meant to handle 3D levels where you can translate and rotate in more than 2 axes, but it turns out the levels become wayyy too hard with that many degrees of freedom 😅
I love rhythm games! I haven't played Parappa, though my song is inspired by Rhythm Heaven (DS). Specifically the ""Built to Scale" level. It might be subtle, but there's a part in my song that has the same beat as a section from that level!
I swear I wasn't making adjustments on level 1, but I probably was. And the camera wasn't too bad, I just got too crafty for my own good. Though where I ended up was fun, despite having to revert it.
I'll have to show my Rhythm Heaven enjoying friend the game, I was a DDR / Parappa kid but they played all the DS music games!
