Oh! I loved this one! The combination of the 3D elements with the 2D worker great! I think the difference between the cute art style from the sprites and the simple but good made backgrounds made the scenes look like distorted memories.
I kinda knew where was this going, especially after taking the initiative in the first date part, but I loved to have something really cute and sweet between all the spooky-themed novels.
I have some issues with the "movement part". Around the second art, the CPU usage went wild. I have an i5 11400+Rtx3050 and I didn't felt lag in the graphics, but the coolers were working hard. Also, I don't know if this has to do with me using a notebook pad instead of a mouse, but sometimes the camera controls didn't work and made the "escape" moments worse lol (in a good way because I was a lot more scared).

The writing was great! One of my favorites so far! The characters had great chemic between them and their conversations felt natural and not forced at all.

Looking forward to reading more from the team!

I can't speak about the technical side of things but glad that you were more spooked than frustrated :D

Also really appreciate that you enjoyed the writing! I had a lot of fun feeling out the voices between our main characters so I'm glad to hear that their chemistry seemed realistic and cute. It's also been super interesting to hear from everyone about when the plot started falling into place for them. I think the moment you highlighted is about exactly where we wanted people to be more suspicious about what was happening haha

Muhuhaha.... foreshadowing >:3c

Sorry about the CPU usage. We ran right down to the deadline here so I didn't get any time to focus on optimization. I'm surprised that a few people have had CPU issues though, I was really expecting GPU to be the major problem if anything. It makes me think it would be a pretty solvable problem. Thank you so much for playing though, I'm glad you enjoyed.

It's gooodd~ I love the voice acting, it really feels like they're having normal conversations and they were able to show the characters' personalities well. The sprites are cute~ I was surprised to see a first-person 3D RPG mechanic involved here too. The only issues I have are the lag  (I'm using integrated graphics- Intel Iris XE, that's why. Though I think it'd be nice to specify the minimum recommended specs on the game page just in case) and the user experience when it comes to the GUI. I struggled looking for the save button since I got used to seeing them near the dialogue when it comes to visual novels. I really want to finish this. I hope there's a way to adjust the graphic settings? I can't say much about the plot since I haven't finished it yet. But the intro's already intriguing so I'm sure this is really good.  <3

It's great to hear you're enjoying it so far! I do agree that a disclaimer about required specs would be nice, even during playtesting older builds as I was writing out the script I ended up being one of the only people on the dev team who couldn't run it at a high frame rate haha :'] but AAA it's awesome that you liked the intro!

Developer

When it comes to graphics optimization and modes, it was a stretch goal I sadly did not achieve before the deadline. I'll keep in mind the save and load button for the future, I should have left them on the dialogue boxes.

This was such a cool concept and a surprisingly sweet story :3 I mean, I know it says it's a love story fragmented, so I shouldn't be that surprised x3 I guess I just thought it was going to be much more sinister from the general foreboding feeling of the nightmares. Don't get me wrong though, it was a pleasantly sweet surprise :3 The end made me give an audible, aww. I'd like to say exactly why, but I don't want to accidentally spoil anything by making a clumsy comment >.<

Anyways, I was also surprised by how much I enjoyed the nightmare segments of the game! I'm the sort of player who generally dislikes any kind of additional gameplay mechanics in VNs x3 purely because I play VNs to read and relax (usually in bed with a laptop on my belly xD) so extra elements often frustrate and irritate me. They have a habit of also pulling me out of any level of immersion I've achieved. That wasn't the case with the nightmares! If anything, I enjoyed them more than the traditional VN gameplay segments :3 They were really fun to explore and I love all the little details in them with how the scenery sometimes changed depending on the angle of approach and that sort of thing! It was extremely funky and I loved it :D

And yay to voice acting of course!

Awesome job <3

I'm so glad you enjoyed the game, and that it was such an immersive experience for you!! TvT <3

Yay for funky gameplay! Exactly because the VN side is a little sweeter, I wasn't sure how the nightmare parts were going to feel in comparison, so I'm super happy to hear that it was not too jarring and actually appropriately spooky for people lol (very proud of our programming and modelling team for their hard work!)

I wrote most of the ending so very hyped that you liked it! (^∀^) *casually screenshots for my confidence boosting archives*

Also yes, shoutout to our voice actors who worked very hard for this! Very grateful for their time and energy :D

Did you really manage an 11-person team? DAAAAAAAAMN. That must have been a huge amount of work! I thought the central story was very sweet and poignant, and told in an effective way. The character art was cute, I liked that it had full voice acting, and there were some cleverly done aspects to the 3D scenes, like how the camera inverts when you see a memory. My issue, and unfortunately it's a big one, is just overall unity and cohesion. It's really hard to build a game with this many contributors and make it feel like it all goes together. Of course you want the dream sequences to feel distinct, but you don't want them to feel like it's a scene from a completely different game. Likewise, there's a fine line between the dream sequences feeling surreal and unsettling and the dream sequences feeling like a jumble. It's such a nice story--some more stylistic consistency will help deliver the story more effectively.

Developer(+1)

Well put! Sadly the biggest challenge for me was trying to get the 3d scenes together on time, so art lost cohesion for them, while they are supposed to feel dreamlike and unreal, I did want more visual consistency with the novel segments. Given a longer deadline I would have liked to have hand drawn art for the memories you encounter in the dreams. I was hoping the fragments would give a bit more of a tie to the overall story for feeling there.

I forgot to say, even though for the majority of the team this was their first jam, they all worked very hard and together well. Work was split effectively and a few of us managed the VA's so everything was pain free as far as managing the team.

Developer (1 edit)

In terms of contributors to the story and gameplay, it was just a six person dev team, but we had quite a few voice actors, yes!

As Chris said, for a team of mostly new developers, everybody was surprisingly hard-working and reliable and we all wore a lot of hats with little to no miscommunication. (And on top of that, our VAs were very accommodating even when our deadline was fast approaching).

I came in as a secondary writer about halfway through the jam, but as far as I understand, everyone was following one preset, central narrative that drove every element of the game. In hindsight, I think it was the late stage attempt to stay true to the original scope of things that contributed to that stylistic dissonance you mentioned. I appreciate your valid critique though! It's given me a lot to think about regarding production and writing :)

Great job!! My computer was definitely have some issues handling all the 3d, but the voice and design is super well done. The character art in particular I love - it's a really great art style!

Thank you!! I'm glad to hear you liked the art! 🥰

Just started playing this and I love it! The character designs are great, the music absolutely slaps (hoarding the soundtrack and adding it to my collection), and I adore the voice acting!

Great job to everyone who worked on this!!! :D

Legit.  I love the "Curious George" style book art and the puzzle dreams were pretty tripped out like an old 90's haunted house at the fairgrounds.

Great work guys.

Developer(+1)

Tysm! I hadn't seen the puzzle dreams like that before but now I can't unsee the resemblance 😆
