I had quite a bit of fun with this game! Simple game idea executed marvelously, in my opinion! If I was to critique anything, it may be that the book sometimes felt like it was held out a bit far. Maybe this was part of the plan… have the book fall out of the player’s hand if they take corners too quickly? It just felt a little odd, but, over all nothing serious.

The ghost effect was great, both visually and in operation!

Wonderful entry you have here! Here’s a link to me streaming this game recently!

Developer(+1)

i totally get it, i got quite a few complaints about it haha. i didn't think too much of it because i got used to it pretty quickly while working on it, but watching other people play showed me pretty quickly that some people are prone to constantly lose books around shelves, and are forced to learn a skill that has nothing to do with the game, which is unfair in my opinion and not fun... tedious even.

However, due to all the feedback, I've fixed it! - for version 0.2.0 the book gets held closer to the player and stops "snapping" to surfaces!

Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it!

The game was truly scary and well made.

I found some minor bugs with the book's physics, but it was a good game. Well done.

Developer

Thank you for checking it out!
Book Physics - I know exactly what you're referencing, I'm currently working on version 0.2 at the moment and have re-worked the book physics to not "stick" to surfaces. It made placing and scanning more tactile but also made it SOOOO much easier to lose the book around corners, etc.. Just ran out of time for the jam!

Thank you for the feedback, really appreciate it 👏🎃

This is great! This is a really unique idea, I enjoyed it a lot. It was a bit hard on my computer though.

Developer

it definitely could run better! in the next version i'll add FSR so the game can run at a lower quality but upscaled, might fix the low frames on slower machines.

Thanks for checking it out! Appreciate the feedback 🙏🎃

Well made, first moments were well executed and the jumpscares got me nicely, that to say, I like the monster design too, simple but fun. The gameloop also works nicely, my only true critism is that I feel the shelves were not ordered logically, but just my own nitpick lol Not even a real gameplay complaint since for the gameloop you probably want the player to scramble about anyways :D I think maybe one bug I found, if you can call it that, at certain point I started to use it as mechanic, is that if you crouch the ghost can and will move towards you even if you're looking. But ye, maybe that was also intended. Oh and nicely done with the progressive music.

Great work here!

Developer(+1)

I've had a couple people complain about that actually - originally I was gonna make them shuffle every playthrough but realized quickly THAT was 💩💩💩 ahahah. The crouching is actually a bug, i might keep it, not sure yet... i think its hilarious when people crouch and don't realise its still coming toward them, scares the CRAP out of them 😂 but its also a bit unfair if you only discover it late-game... what do you think?

Cheers for the feedback mate!

Submitted(+1)

Hmmm I don't actually think it's unfair. Like games can reward players who know more, from playing the game more or experimenting, for example game might reward player for knowing a solution to a puzzle from previous playthrough or give a player bonus items for getting out of bounds. It's not unfair per say then. And your game already has this in a place sort of, players who take time exploring or have played the game more than once will likely memorize the bookshelf placement. Some might even set up the early game by scanning the all of the given books first and then placing them in front of the book shelfs without putting them in, in order to get through multiple books in a quick session (I did that lol, reason why I found out about the crouch actually). So forgive the long text here, I think it's fairly reasonable to discover it only at late-game, or not at all :D

Developer(+1)

hahah true, i suppose i don't want to hand-hold too much, more to design systems that guide the player in the right direction! i like that the ghost does stop eventually when you're crouching. Thanks again for the feedback!

Bibliophobic levels of awesomeness.

Developer(+1)

i had NO IDEA there was a fear of books 😂 i gotta work that in to the lore somehow....

Submitted

Hell yeah!

Submitted(+1)

This was great, its been awhile since I have gotten a book from a libary. A cool concept

Developer

thanks for checking it out!

Really cool game. Interesting gameplay.

Developer(+1)

thanks for playing mate! i'm gonna check your game out now 🎃

Cool game, love the retro/vintage look.

Developer(+1)

thanks mate! appreciate you checking it out 🎃

Submitted(+1)

Great game! The game is quite straightforward and it really creeps me out when I first saw the ghost, with the tension building as the game progresses. Love the sound design!

Developer

thanks for checking it out!

I enjoyed this game soo much. It was fun, dreadful and scary. I like the aesthetic and atmosphere, really the only complain I have was that I didn't know where some book genres were, but even that can be an upside cuz you are trying to figure out where to put those books under the fear of getting caught by the monster. Really good game, keep up the good work!

Developer(+1)

haha yep its part of the challenge, you know you have to keep an eye on the ghost but you have to also look around for categories! 😂 my favorite is when people run-and-gun the books and completely lose track of the ghost, in retrospect I should've added a map near the scanner or something, it'd help with early game and slightly with late game 🤔 thanks for checking it out!

Submitted(+1)

The game provides a strong sense of fear, the gameplay is very easy to understand, and the various game settings and features are quite comprehensive. In the end, I managed to stick with it until I finished 13 books.

Developer

well done! it gets pretty hard around 10, by 20 you're watching your every step 😂 thanks for checking it out!

Submitted(+1)

Whoa I love this. The bookshelves being so tight gives both a maze like feel and claustrophobia which is so anxiety inducing even before the monster showing up

Developer

hahah i love that, and the fact that its only a single room so it feels totally doable. thanks for checking it out!

Submitted

Whoa, that was intense! The progression of a ghost feeling like no thread to full blown problem is really well done!

Developer(+1)

that's such a good way to put it. seen sooo many people taunt the ghost at the start 😂

Submitted

Really good game. The idea is clever and simple which is perfect for a jam and it works well to creep the player out, increasing as the game goes on. The part I didn’t like was finding where the books go, it wasn’t clear enough for me. I think making the bookcase you’re looking for highlight or adding a direction indicator / map could help here.

Great entry, well done!

Developer(+1)

i've been thinking about how to combat this exact issue - thinking of adding a map to the next version to help!

actually, i think ill trial highlighting the bookcase too, thanks for the suggestion, appreciate it! 🎃

Submitted(+1)

Great game! The atmosphere is well pumped up. It’s cool that the music changes with the number of books submitted. But I was never able to beat the game, I kept accidentally bumping into a ghost.

Developer(+1)

glad you noticed the music changes! i spent quite a bit of time putting that together 😂 thanks for playing my dude 🎃

Submitted(+1)

Cool idea, I got confused on where to put the books lol.

Developer

thanks mate! there's a bookshelf for every book but as others have mentioned, i should probably add a map near the scanner to help with the early game :)

Submitted(+1)

Awesome game! Love the book scanning mechanic and level layout. never know whats gonna be around any of the corners.. Great voice acting and the sfx really immerse you into the experience.. definitely scary!

Developer

Thanks for checking the game out! Glad you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

this was really cool! i was upset the ghost wasn't just helping me put the books back where they go, like i've got a job to do and the ghost isn't helping yuh know lol. some issues i had were the ghost could hurt you through walls, maybe just a doing a ray check to make sure it can actually see you would fix that, and the speed at which you lose health was very high (although i'm not sure but there might be some magic pixel funny business going on with the health to help you survive when it's super low, if so good polish on that). it was a really fun experience overall, great job on this ya'll!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

yes the health through walls thing was giving me a bit of grief but didnt have enough time to fix it, i think it can only nick you around corners right? in the 0.1.4 version i panicked because i didn't realise the hitbox for the ghost could get you through an entire bookshelf! thought i fixed it but noticed it while other people played 😭 that's something i need to trial-and-error out of the next version. there are raycast checks constantly but i must've missed something with the health vs scare prerequisites😂

aha yes there's a little buffer zone around 1 HP to give you a little extra fight, and its tuned for about 2-3 "scares" before death, 1 felt unfair and any more kinda ruins the fear effect.

man thank you so much for your feedback, and thanks for checking the game out!

Submitted(+1)

I love it. The game design simple and well thought... enough to scare me a loooooooot, and give me extreme anxiety, which is fine by me. DAMN I am even struggling to write!

Developer(+1)

hahah awesome man - that's about the highest honor a scary game can get 😂🎃 Thanks for checking it out!

Submitted(+1)

Thoughtful game design, i think it reinforces the experience quite nicely!~

Developer

i appreciate the feedback, thanks for playing! 🎃
