Description
Genre: Ambient, Downtempo
DAW: Garageband, with Spitfire's BBC Symphony Orchestra plugin (the screenshot says String Ensemble but I used the plugin as the sound source).

I really love the Silent Hill OSTs so I tried to replicate their style by accentuating the beats, adding some emotion, etc, and I even put a leitmotif in there somewhere. For this track, I actually tried two new things that I've never done before: one was creating that thumping sound (labelled "sound a" in the screenshot), which I made by scraping a usb adapter thing against a metal fan (so, random desk noises basically), slowing it down, and putting it in a sampler. The other thing I tried was separation with EQ; I'm really new to mixing so I hope it actually turned out well :)

[EDIT: For those willing to give constructive criticism, I would love to know if I did the separation well, especially at the bit when all the strings join in, which I tried really hard to make not sound too muddy. It would also help to know if the beats are too loud; I was trying to make them stand out in the track instead of hanging in the background, but I’m not sure if it comes off too strong or not. Thank you in advance!]

I've never played Yume Nikki or Silent Hill, but I love the music from both games, and I hope my love for their music is written in every measure of my remix.

That's great! Really fell that heartbreaking Silent Hill vibe.

I love love love the percussion here (those slowed-down samples slap). Also the change at minute 3:00 is so cool, the strings and guitar jut wrap around your ears delightfully. You've built quite a lot of complexity on top of the relatively bare-bones original song and it doesn't feel repetitive at all. Great entry!

This is a very cool ambient piece. The pad you use blends really nicely giving an ethereal sound. When you have music that uses fairly repetitive motifs, I think that it’s okay for them to not need center-stage the entire time. So when the drums came in and seemed to be the furthest forward, it didn’t seem wrong and in fact gave some energy and direction to the previously floaty and directionless music (which by the way is excellent for Silent Hill). When the strings came in, everything was very clear with minimal mud. I wonder though if the EQ was a little tight for some of the strings, especially the viola. I also struggle with trying to cut frequencies to make room for other instruments without sacrificing resonance and sound. In my mind, part of what makes instruments sound authentic is the overtones they produce. When high frequencies are cut, it is cleaner, but those overtones are potentially lost, consequently making the instrument sound more synthetic. I think that what you created is authentic to the early Playstation Silent Hill sound and that’s fantastic since this is what you intended. I just wanted to offer my thoughts based on the specific feedback you were asking for. I am by no means an expert on EQ, at the same time, I am a firm believer trusting our ears to guide us in the right direction. As far as the beats go, with the headphones I’m using, they sound fantastic - they are clear but don’t stick out. Great work overall and thank you for sharing both of your submissions!

Ah the strings were super hard to work into the song! And I know some of that tightness is also from the fact that for one of the instruments I used mellotron strings instead an orchestral sound like the rest—the reason being I wanted the sound to be synthetically similar to the strings used in Theme of Laura from SH2 and also sound kind of like an airy guitar?? Something like that, it was definitely more of an ear decision than a thought one but I agree something about it could’ve been done better lol

Thank you so much for listening and for your helpful feedback, I’m glad I managed to achieve the style I was going for and that the beats aren’t too aggressive :)

This is fantastic! The sounds you picked really capture that old-school survival horror atmosphere.

Love the use of slowed down samples for percussion as well - a lot of old PS1 games used to use similar tricks (my favourite: https://twitter.com/wblamkin/status/1504111703985905666), so it fits really well for a Silent Hill tribute :)

Thank you so much! And yes, I actually got inspired to make a sample after reading interviews with Akira Yamaoka and realizing he did the same exact thing for the Silent Hill OSTs (a personal favorite of mine is Memory of the Waters from SH3, where he used the sound of windshield wipers).

This sounds great! I don't have a lot of context for either because I haven't played them, but after listening to the original and skimming through a few tracks from Silent Hill, it seems like you did a great job combining the two!

Thank you! (and lol I haven’t played them either I just love the music 😅)
