  • As the first level, of a potentially award winning video game, this project is hard to fault. It nails the themes, narratively and mechanically (and somewhat beautifully), the tried-and-true platforming gameplay is tight and compelling (though much too easy - perfect, for a first level, of an amazing video game) and the simple puzzles hearken of something more, and it is gorgeously drawn and scored. Not seeing this project continued and turned into a full game would be tantamount to HERESY.
  • Charming game with fluid movement and interesting visuals, but I'm not sure the theme of the jam really comes through here.

Tell us about your game!
I Will Remember You is a narrative-driven puzzle platformer game in the vein of games like Thomas Was Alone and Fez. The game takes place on the tattered pages of the diary of an old man suffering from late-stage dementia. Unable to comprehend the world around him due to his condition, our protagonist finds himself looking inward at his fragmented memories, seeking from the past, loved ones he can no longer perceive in the present.

The player controls a doodled cube moving through pencil-sketched levels on the scattered pages of a diary. The player can move between the pages of the diary but the character is only visible on the paper itself. In later stages, this is used as a mechanic where the player needs to jump between pieces of paper.

I'm no big brain dev, but thought I'd leave what I thought of the game here!

I really like the music and art of the game! It fits so well with the vibe that the game wants to transmit, and complements the writing perfectly!

The gameplay is also really fluid and satisfying! If anything, there's only two tiny very small little ant sized nitpicks: maybe make the jump a tiiiny bit more precise, like being able to do very veeeery tiny hops. Jumping from ramps sometimes can also be a little tough, but none of these things are game breaking in any way.

I thought the puzzles were simple and satisfying to get through, and the different mechanics were introduced in a fun and dynamic way! The checkpoints were also quite a good touch to avoid frustration, and the difficulty was ramped up quite nicely!

I also really like both the visual AND audio effect that happens when you're inside of a cloud. Even though I didn't stay inside it for too long, it was a tiny but nice detail that I noticed.

Speaking of the chasing section, I really like the execution of the writings being in different directions, almost unorganized, creating a very striking difference from the calmer notes from the first stages. That, coupled with the stage being introduced with no music really helped sell the point that something was up.

In general, I had a fun time with the game! As you could see, the only things I pointed out were very small nitpicks, and that's because the game works really really well, and all of its aspects give it a very specific vibe that I enjoyed. The gameplay is precise, the sound effects and music are comfortable and uncomfortable when they need to be, and the writing is interesting and brings questions about the character, and the only thing that I could consider as a glitch (having the door slam you inside the ground), whilst undesirable, can easily be resolved through restarting (which isn't bad/frustrating in the case of this game, considering the fast gameplay, short level lengths and door locations)!

Really, really good work and very strong submission!

Thank you for the very kind words and for the feedback/bug reporting. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I played your game this morning, great work!

Very fun, also challenging at points! Charming art style and liked the writing :)

Developer

Thank you for the kind words, and playing the game!

The game is so adorably cute in all its simplicity.
Very well made puzzles and captivating storyline <3

Thank you so much for playing!

Wowowow, such a well polished platformer, thoughtful narritive and interesting puzzle mechanics! Really amazing entry.

Side note turns out if you go through a door as its closing, its possible to clip into the wall hahaha

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for playing and for the kind words. And thank you for the bug report!

I'm not the sharpest platform player, but your soulful writing voice and the mechanical smoothness inspired me to push through to the end despite my clumsy fingers. I could immediately see that a lot of thought has been put into how this concept could be experimented with and built bigger, and I hope it is! A simply lovely game; good job, and have a wonderful jam 💚

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the wonderful comments, feels amazing to have the writing noticed. I thoroughly enjoyed your game as well!

Recognized your name from EXP's chat. Gave the game a try. I was not ready to through an existential crisis while also playing a well put together platformer.  It was the only game thus far which compelled me to complete it. Great job!

Developer

Watching EXP play it was a bit nerve racking lol. Thank you for playing and for the kind words!

This looks amazing! Unfortunately, when I try to download it I can't seem to extract it. I don't have WinRar, so maybe that's the problem? Zip and 7-zip both say there are unspecified errors.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the interest. Yeah I've seen a few comments to that effect. The problem does in fact appear to be that I RAR'd it rather than ZIPped it. Force of habit smh.

Wow, such a good job! Paper notes aesthetic is terrific, and some nice ideas in here already like the jumping off the page and not being able to see for a moment. Plus, very artistic and beautifully told story.  At times it felt a bit too fast and too precised. And slopes could be a little janky feeling, but hey, that's slopes for ya.

Really interested to see how you expand on this.

Developer

Thank you for playing and for the kind words. I know what you mean about the slopes. Unfortunately I ran out of time to fix it. Just played your game, great entry!

This is a great example of games as an art form! A very charm story told through a very creative artstyle. I hope you expand on this idea further; the spinning mechanic was very fun and I saw you said in another comment that you have other mechanics ready to go, hope to see a full version of this :)

A little suggestion: Handle the music through a singleton or a separate scene that never unloads, that way you can choose if the music restarts or not when restarting a level (nless this was intentional).

Great job!!!

The game absolutely oozes charm. The artstyle is so cool, the music is great, the story is fun and told extremely well, and the level design is absolutely textbook, and the gameplay feels smooth. The last level is pretty hard when you're put against the clock but I love it. All I can say as a nitpick is I wish I respawned faster after dying, and that you did more with the spinning mechanic, but that's literally it and I would love to see this fleshed out further into a more full indie game!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! And yeah, I've a had a couple of comments on the respawn time. Fortunately it's not a massive issue to fix. Totally agree on the spinning mechanic, I just ran out of time. I had half a dozen other mechanics coded that didn't even make into a level :(

Thanks again for playing and for the feedback!

I absolutely loved the mechanic of not being able to see your character as it gets off page. Great job!

Developer

Thanks!

wow the art style and music and notes are all so cozy and beautiful.

some of the levels are very hard! specifically, when the fog first starts spreading, when you jump and the character disappears between the papers disorients me a bit. I really enjoy the platforming, and the way the cube rotates a bit when you are on the corner.

Movement is very smooth, if a bit fast.

Sometimes respawning has a delay that feels a bit too long. When I am stuck on a part I want to immediately jump back in, so a delay that long can be a bit frustrating.

Overall very impressive and a pleasant and comfy experience!

Developer

Thanks! I put probably more effort into the art style and aesthetic than was warranted for a game jam game. And yeah some of the stages are tricky. If I had more time to think up levels I would shift it more in the direction of casual puzzle solving and less skilled platforming, but puzzles are hard lol.

As for the rest, the pitfalls of being a lone playtester of your own game lol. Thanks for the feedback, I'm actually happy that most of the issues you had with the game are literally down to a few tweakable variables. Thanks for playing!

Loving the theme of this game. Very somber, fits well with the theme and feels good to play. Some of the text in the final level can be a little bit hard to read due to the need to keep running. Overall super solid!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! And yeah the text in the final level is meant to be a bit of a distraction if anything. That whole level is supposed to be a chaotic mess. Thanks for playing!
