‘Pool of Memories’ is a 2D platforming MetroidVania that follows a bitter axolotl as he’s forced to submerge himself into his past and dive into childhood memories, learning to view them more wholistically.

On top of enhancing movement through the physical gameworld, we also wanted to our tracks to accompany movement through moments of dissociation, catharsis, or utter clarity. These moments exist in our soundtrack, which we imagine would score game mechanics where the player might move between worlds of forgetting and remembering. Various elements in the arrangement, composition, and sound design are meant to instill a sense of nostalgia in the listener.

Aidan, who was mostly focused on composition, would bring to the studio anything from an all-nighter’s musical mullings to a half-baked potato spat out onto the floor, which Errol, our production gremlin, would pick up with his greasy mitts and spin into a world beyond your wildest dreams using only fresh homemade samples and patches (with the exception of a Kontakt piano and a real-life guitar).

Errol’s toolbox mainly consisted of the many facets of Ableton Live as well as plugins like Opal (Max4Live Drum Synth), Serum and Portal. And his biggest inspirations are SOPHIE, AG Cook, Autechre, Brian Eno, Jake Kaufman, and Yasunori Mitsuda.

Aidan can hardly define his toolbox even at gunpoint, but supposes it has something to do with playing a couple different instruments and reeeeaaaally liking chords. His biggest inspirations musically are Joni Mitchell, Radiohead, Big Thief, Broken Social Scene, St. Vincent, and Koji Kondo.

These two hags then sat behind the same computer for hours on end, and plop! Out came about 13 minutes of music for your listening pleasure.

Theme

Inside my world

How does it fit the theme?
The game takes place inside the memories of the protagonist, in a sort of inner world. The soundtrack also attempts to make the listener feel submerged at various points, lost in a wash of memories.

I do not know why, but the piano in the first two tracks was heavy... In terms of the fact that it became somehow sad in my soul. Heh ...

Early Game Memory is Pleasant, fun, with a touch of hope.
Late Game Memory - So, it already sounds fun, but in moments of "tension" it sounds menacing (Especially those extra dead voices after low notes, like at 1:37... how did you do it?)

Overall, it was interesting. Thank you!

P.S. Heh, Radiohead)

The piano was gorgeous!

The first track was my favorite which is weird for me usually I like faster songs which this OST has but the title track just really worked for me!

I liked these piano heavy tracks. The underwater theme felt present and was handled very well throughout these tracks and I was immersed in this world. A great job overall, thanks for sharing!

Wow... here we are on a high level. The idea of bubbles in the main theme is beautiful.

Writing that I truly adore. Minimal, with a touch of nostalgia but at the same time not empty: in the background, there are many elements that prevent the music from being static. The music also fits well with the concept of the game, and all the tracks have an evident common thread, which is not a given and not easy to achieve.

Really, best of luck with everything and may the best one win!

Great mix of instrument and timbres) Love this slow shift from ambient piano in first track to full of energy electronic mix in last track. Beautiful!

Love the quietness of the songs and your story ideas! Sounds like an exciting game! I love the ambience, it is moving. Just like seeing memories. Great submission!

Pool of Memories is just so laden with ambience, I love it. Great composition and progression throughout - an absolute delight to listen to. The other tracks were a surprising but welcome change of tone and pace - good work on keeping things varied and interesting! Think this is great all around, honestly. Best of luck!

Such creative writing with the piano, which is so difficult to get right. I loved the intimacy with the piano, but the shift to synths and drums was still very fitting. Great job!!!

Waves of Nostalgia is the king of this submission for me! Though Twisted Image is a close second. Very well done friends! You've got a banger of a submission here.

we're so glad you enjoyed!

I love the subtle water drop sounds through out some of the tracks, it adds so much to them! Really enjoyed you guys' sound palette as well... so pretty and exciting at the same time. I liked Dip Your Feet In especially, it's simple but does the comfy feeling of a rest area so well. It makes me want to wiggle my toes in a pool for a little bit.

Also, Twisted Image... what a banger. I love the energy.

Also also, love your description, lol. Awesome work!

Beautiful piano writing!! Love the little fx here and there to combine the orchestration for water with sound design elements for memories if I'm understanding. The synth approach on the later track also works really well. Great work on this!

Developer(+1)

yeah you got it! we wanted the listener to feel submerged in memory or thought :)

Beautiful tracks! Fits the theme very well, that title track is amazing. Interesting to see all the directions you took it in, I wasn't expecting the EDM influence later on. Really solid stuff!
