Use of the limitation
As we play a growing black hole, everything that crosses our path eventually disappears to allow our progress. There should have been more use of the limitation in the narrative, but we kinda lost track of that during development :c

(I am now in a rush to test as many games as possible to help, so please do not mind the cursory reviewing style.)
The presentation is amazing (the level of details, and how everything is dynamic, especially the camera), and you managed to slip in a whole science-fiction story (I realized this is not really a noir story, but rather a "trou noir" story XD). The main mechanic (absorbing (the world!)) totally fits the constraint; this is a simple yet addictive concept. My main criticism would be that the game/prototype is way too easy, except maybe for the first times when you figure out how to evade the cops, but then everything is straightforward (can you even lose during the second phase? :o). Some more challenge would really do wonders!
Anyway, the whole presentation is very impressive and humourous (forgot to say that!) (and cute!), which is great and memorable. :) Thanks for the game!
Ok, now I realize the exact meaning of "Noir" in english. I knew we were deviating a bit from it with the black hole idea, but now I realize we completely missed the purpose :')
Thanks a lot for your feedback ! It should have been possible to lose during the second level. My idea was that you needed to absorb the ships from the back, as facing them would drain some mass from you until you eventually lose, but I couldn't implement the enemy behavior in time.
I really enjoyed this. While the concept of the game was simple, the story kept me hooked for the entire game. I'm surprised you were able to fit in a completely different mechanic in the second half.
Great game!
Thanks for your feedback !
Fortunately for me, the gameplay mechanic we put into second level is something we already used in part in our two last games, so I was in charted territory :)
This is a great game, small but cohesive and everything tied up neatly.
I think i have the feeling like the game slows down when the black hole turns big. I’m guessing this is normal, because the camera moves away and of course things will move “slower” from afar, but when starting again from the smaller scale then i have the sensation of things moving faster. But this is a very minor problem, and possibly only for me.
I like when games have this comic-like dialogs inside the narrative :)
Thanks for your feedback ! :)
I believe there's an impact on game performances when we scale up the player too much. Perhaps every calculation begins to be more intensive on the engine due to high coordinates, large numbers, etc.
Also, as you say, there's also the feeling that things move slower once the camera moves back / player is larger but still moves at same speed.
Actually, we even wondered if we should slow down a bit the player once it's bigger, but we quickly realized there already was a slowness feeling induced from the scaling up / dezoom.
I didn't really see it as a problem, but I understand it can be seen as one ^^
Thanks, I must say I'm starting to love adding these comic-like dialogs in our games too :)
This would be my guess: for matrix images, this is a mouthful to process. I can think of two solutions:
Oh, thanks :)
Both solutions seem quite clever indeed !
It was small but great. The narrative, the art, the mechanics all were great. I loved the music too.
Thanks a lot :)
I agree that if you expand it in the future then it would be a great game.
Thanks for your feedback ! That's really nice to read :)
Unfortunately I've never expanded our games outside of game jams so far
Reminds me of games like Katamari! It makes my brain happy when I can eat the big thing.
This is one of those games that I'd love to play again if you ever expand it! Would love to start swallowing stars and eventually the whole universe.
Thanks for your feedback !
Yes, it's definitely inspired Katamari (or mostly The Wonderful End of the World by Dejobaan Games, because I never really played Katamari, but I really should catch up with that game one day)
I agree, scaling up until swallowing the universe would be pretty sastifying, but so far I've never been able to commit to expand our games outside of game jams ^^'
Genuinely a well put together little game. reminds me a lot of the old flash games on newgrounds!
I liked the game mechanics, expanding the view as you grew bigger.
Good work guys!
Thanks for your feedback ! :)
This was a very cute little game, I found it pretty fun! I love the animation of Black Hole #38 at the start, it's got a whole lot of character for being so simple! The use of limitation kind of got lost with the twist at the end, though.
Thanks for your feedback !
Yes, we didn't think about it when we wrote the ending, but clearly there could have been a more limitation-related scenario.
I guess we just wanted to have an happy ending :)
That's fair! It was a very nice ending, I liked it regardless of the limitation
