Really ambitious game. Love the story and it was nice to see some cutscenes. The game interface felt more like a professional game than most. I liked that I could minimize the game and move it to another window. I was really impressed that you got the download down to 22mb, and the web version loaded really fast.
I played this game in the first few days of the voting and it frustrated me so much, and there were so many glowing comments, I decided to come back and try it again. It was better the second time. My biggest complaint the first time turned out to be due to level design. I got the sword, ended up outside, ran for a really long time, and then ended up in the cavern where the spider boss was and couldn't figure out what to do next. I felt lost and kinda gave up. I had no idea that there was a double-jump down there I'd missed.
So round two, I found the double-jump first, but then died getting back to the save point. Knowing the sword was to the west, I found it - came back and got the double jump. I then exited the cave and found the boss spider. I could not beat it. I kept trying, then went looking for another powerup because I felt I was missing something. Never found it and went back to fight the spider again. After a dozen tries, I gave up. I felt I was being punished by RNGesus. Even when I had the pattern down, the spider could trap me in a corner and sit on me. Sometimes the little spiders didn't come fast enough. Sometimes they came too fast. Often, I'd kill every one but the one holding the health, and then there'd be an unavoidable last hit right before I was back up to full health. It would have been nice if each one dropped one health square, or more than one dropped two or something. As it was, the boss battle felt like luck - not skill. I finally gave up.
The controller worked well with the buttons, but the left stick on the controller did not work correctly. Most of the time I could not move or jump left. My controller has a bit of drift, and so it's often pulling to the right a bit. My guess is that you had an if/else that moved right if you got a right button, otherwise left if you got a left button. A normalized Vector2 input would have likely solved this problem as me pushing to the left would have overcome the slight drift when adding the right and left inputs. Again, just a guess. Bummer the credits button didn't work, but minor.
The music was kinda underwhelming, but the cave itself with its echo was very atmospheric so well-done there. A couple of times the sword animation got stuck and I couldn't hit anything. It cleared up though.
I tried to google RavDot and was not able to find it. I'm assuming this was your own custom version of Godot 4.5, one of the dev releases? I was interested in learning more.
Overall it did have the structure of a Metroidvania, so well done there.
Great one! The mood and atmosphere are great, and I like how we are able to understand the lizard folk, that's a nice touch.
At first I thought the spider boss was too hard, but then it spawns smaller spider that drop health recovery, and it becomes so much more manageable, that's really nice.
Solid entry! I love that it had some story, characters and a whole intro to go with it. Super impressive!
The visuals were very nice, especially the character sprite and its animations. The FX were great too, like the screen transitions, the subtle lighting or the trail after a double jump. Even the big spider boss had some wonderful procedural animation!
I must admit I did not enjoy the SFX quite as much, though. I found most of them grating, especially the repetitive ones like the footsteps or the typewriter effect for the dialog box.
Combat was a bit weird. I never managed to avoid any enemy before finding the sword. And then I thought they had way too much health, so my strategy became pushing them out of platforms and ignoring them. The spider boss attacks were very hard to predict for me and he had so much HP I gave up after dying halfway through (the little spiders that can refill your health completely stopped spawning at some point). It's possible I was a bit unprepared, as I only had the double jump and the sword, no other powerup. Also, at some point my sword wouldn't perform the attack all the way through (like it jammed) but I don't know if it's a mechanic I didn't understand or a bug.
Though my biggest complaint would be the camera. There were a lot of times where I had to jump down but couldn't see where I would land. Having it aiming down a bit more would be, or have a button to peek in some direction, like in Hollow Knight where you can look up or down.
Still, I really enjoyed my time with this game. There's quite a bit of potential there, nice job!
Very impressive entry! Love the artwork, especially the enemy design. Attack combo feels solid as does enemy hit feedback. Jumping mechanics feel solid.
The instant kill spikes felt needlessly punishing, especially because the camera panning was quite slow. I died many times to instant kill spikes I didn't even see. Related, save points also should start you at full health when respawning.
Impressive level of polish for a jam entry, nice job!
Nice work, this was a lot of fun! The art was great and mechanics all worked well. The boss fight was challenging but doable. Some very minor points: the footstep sfx didn’t feel right, I’m not sure exactly what it is about it but obviously not an issue. One very very weird bug (played on web) was I initially couldn’t move left, only right. So I alt-tabbed to the itch page, confirmed it didn’t say anything about only going right, alt tabbed back and it was fine. A legit suggestion would have been some clearer visual distinction on the spiders, the wall movers had the foot markers but I don’t remember anything distinguishing the hoppers vs the walkers. Again, not a big deal since you go and slash them regardless.
My biggest “complaint” is that I want more! Keep it up!
This was so fun to play, especially the boss fight. It's really polished overall but I did have a strange bug where I couldn't attack for some reason, the start of the attack animation would play but the slash wouldn't appear and I couldn't deal damage. Maybe because I was spamming the attack? Either way after respawning it fixed itself so I still managed to finish this masterpiece. Well done on the jam!
OH. MAH. GODDOOO!!!
I loved this SOOO MUUCH!!!
It's sad that there's not a lot to see other than a few caves and desserts, but I still loved all of it. the art is super pretty, the music is also very good, and the sound effects (despite being external assets) are so ear-candyyyyy. I'll admit I fell in love with this game as soon as the starting cutscene started, I'm a sucker for any kind of little stories, but the one you guys presented here was actually done sooooo well!! I love Maira and her design, and I love how the intro cutscene and the portraits have this black/white sketch artstyle, it gives the game so much identity! Also, the fact you actually start the game on low health because you just crashed??? Those are the tiny details I love to see!
The boss fight was also top tier! I love everything about it, and it even have an ENTRANCE SCENE!!! I am not joking when I say I think that's the first time I see a boss having a proper, fully fleshed out entrance scene in this jam.
(Granted, I don't play every single entry that is submited everytime, but still)And I think that's kinda it, really, I have nothing else to say x)
I guess the only nitpick I can give is that everytime you pass throught a transition Maira stops dead on the new room until you release the movement key and press it again, but like, that's so minor lol
Completely unrelated now, but I find it very funni the idea of a excalibur just casually lying around on a random alien planet x)
Also, the cover art is sick, but it shows Maira going against a T-Rex, and I saw no T-rexxes, so forget everything I said, this game is a 0/10
Jet jumping and slashing cube spiders with Excalibur. I met my fate when fighting the giant spider cube boss. Thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. Nice work!
Those spider cubes really gotten out of hands xD
Thank you so much for playing and for finishing the game!
WOW TF YOU DID THE PROGRAMMING AND THE ART??? damn... i wish to be as good as you someday lol , anyways i love the art in this one, its just the spiders do look kinda jank lol, but its a jam, i love the effects here, the bloom and that subtle shadow, also i just realised theres a godot 4.5 wtf??? anyways peak game great job
Thank you so much for playing!
I was doing illustrations before diving into gamedev, and this is my biggest project yet. You are definitely as capable or even more capable than me, I really love your character portrait for your first 3D entry for the jam (that quake-like/ultrakill-like one), and also the cover art for your jam entry is really amazing!
About the spider sprites, I kid you not they are made 1 hour before the deadline xD Before that, they just godot icon.svg floating around (including the boss)
Godot 4.5 stable is not released yet, but the upstream / dev version is already there ( https://godotengine.org/download/archive/4.5-dev5/ ). It really has some nice features with new useful signals such as get_tree().scene_changed (great for transition). I just stripped down its features, so the export size does not reach 30 MB.
Anyway, thank you for playing and for the feedback!
ooooooo thats why you customised it, awesome!!
Your logo and cover design are siiiiiick. Those wall crawlers are going to give me nightmares. I got stuck in the room with the army of square hoppers on small platforms over the spike pit. I died, then kept respawning and getting torn apart by one of them that was spawn camping me. How do I report the square hopper for bullying?
Thank you for playing and the feedback!
The save point has a little bug, the restored health is not saved. You need to save twice to capture the full health. I agree that the placement of the jumping bug at the start of the desert cave seems a bit unfair (might as well to report them for spawn camping), it will be changed in the future!
