Here is a recording of my gameplay and feedback
I really appreciate this longer form of feedback and the time you put in! I think you made a lot of good points. I know it wasn't obvious but the ankh's raised your max hp and you didn't miss much at the end just the exit with some text. I had a lot of fun participating and this was my second ever game jam.
No problem! Getting good feedback was super helpful to me when i started. Some of the best pieces of advice and feedback came from MVM
Good game! This is a simple and fun Metroidvania. There is a decent level of challenge in the platforming. The abilities are intuitive, and progress is clear for the most part. I did struggle to find the end area and wasn't able to complete the game. I still had fun playing. Good job!
Indiana Jones? Pfft, got nothing on this guy.
Success! I got to the end! The final platforming jump was pretty cool - I had to 'damage boost' off an enemy in order to get the maximum height and make it up there. The backtracking in the game from each powerup was well done and the levels were pretty fun, although a bit simple. I thought it was pretty funny to find a book on 'lava walking'. Great job on creating a full game! It felt satisfying to reach the end. The length was perfect with just enough backtracking to feel like a true metroidvania experience.
I liked the main character design! The run cycle felt a bit slow compared to his actual movement speed so maybe the frame rate could get increased a little bit. And keep an eye on the proportions of his feet — his idle frame has feet a bit larger than in the run cycle.
Would have also loved to have some sounds and music! Some of the objects could have used an audio or visual cue to communicate its purpose to the player. Like the checkpoints, I figured out were checkpoints on my own, but a little sound effect could have let me know I did in fact activate it.
Excellent work good luck on your future games!
Thank you for the thoughtful comment and kind words. I intend to add many of the features mentioned.
The +
- I see that you tried to do everything by yourself, it’s a good initiative
- good choice for engine
The -
some mistakes to avoid:
- The text is not very visible: you have to put it in a dialog bubble, put in a color that stands out (black)
- We see objects, it makes us want to interact with them, but it’s not possible
- it’s very yellow, TOO yellow. Putting a floor of a different color or texture will make the game look less 'flat'.
- Don't hesitate to use assets (crediting of course) so you can concentrate more on level design and programming
courage for the future ;)Thanks for the feedback!
