CONGRATS ON SUBMITTING! Seriously, you managed to cram a ton of rules heavy stuff into 48 hours as well as some fun tone / theme setting. I had a few thoughts while reading:

  • I love the premise of you are the dungeon keepers--here is what they do MOST of the time. Which is probably a lot of mundane stuff! And that's totally fine!
  • Your three phases are nice and clear. Wasn't as sure with the names but they grew on me haha.
  • Really liked your spectrum of "No and" to "Yes and". Very clever and immediately calls forth how I would run this system.
  • The contested rolls difference didn't land with me just because I would need that table in front of me at all time. But I think it could grow on me. Perhaps? Like the idea, don't know if I like having to reference it all the time. Maybe the players have a key with important things like this one on it?
  • The encumbrance table is really well done... but I am not sure if you need it. Again, a lot of charts for the players / DM to keep track of.
  • I always love a good WOUND table and this is a good one! I love how you managed to pack theme and tone in as well.
  • And your character creation is great. You got a lot of content in there that makes me excited to be a subterranean goon haha.

Great job! Definitely keep working on this.

Hey thank you for the kind words and constructive, honest feedback!

As I keep mentioning (and I will stop doing this in every single reply) I came to the jam with a couple of ideas in my head and then couldn't really make them fit  into the theme, so this whole thing just happened spontaneously! It's definitely more crunchy than I would like, but I'm going to continue along in the same vein and see how it plays.

If you liked the concept, then I seriously suggest you take a look at "The Dark Lord Told Me To Deal With These Adventurers But I'm Only A Level 1 Slime " (https://itch.io/jam/mega-rpg-jam/rate/490327) by https://bjkwhite.itch.io/ It's much more complete and probably my favourite that I've looked at so far.

Thanks again!

Don't mention it! I can tell you put a lot of work in on this one.  Definitely keep cracking away at it!

I actually read "... Level 1 Slime" one last night! They got a TON of stuff in there without layout haha. But they did a really nice job as well! But don't sell your system short--yours has a firmer grasp on the feeling being monsters in a dungeon.  Regardless, I'm excited to see what how people develop these further!

For sure! Really glad I took part in this, for many reasons. Thanks again.

i think this is masterfully structured and writen, defintly will make for an intresting finished product, the only wird part is how heavely structerd the gamplay is

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Hahaha so which one is it? Masterfully structured or weirdly heavily structured? But seriously, I wanted the game to have clear transitions between phases of play, as dungeon crawlers are often accused of just being combat simulators. .. but you're probably right, I think the gameplay is overall a bit too "crunchy" for something I needed to finish in 48 hours!

I'm working on finishing it but have decided not to post any updates until the comp is over, come back and check it out at the end of the month!

...and thank you for taking the time to read and comment, it is very much appreciated.

I think this could make a great game if finished. I would focus on crazy mayhem and misfortunes that might befall the characters to give the game more dark humor.

Developer

Thanks Malcolme! It wasn't what I thought I'd be making before the jam began (and I think I bit off more than I could chew in the end), but I'm working on getting a finished version drawn up by the end of the month. Humour of a darker hue and humanoid mayhem are definitely elements I am hoping to emphasise. Thanks again.

This reminds me of a mix of dnd and blades in the dark :)

I've not played Blades... but I've heard a lot about it so some influence crept in for sure!
