Adding Cheats to the spaceship, it is possible to progressively gain more money. Without enough money, the game is impossible to beat (it requires a lot of time)

This game is mad addicting. I loved it! Didn’t end up beating it as I made the mistake of hiring Hubble and went bankrupt the next second. The game is excellent, but my complaint would be that the cheating didn’t feel very necessary. Cheating was mostly optional and I actually went very far without getting any luck with the cheat crew. I think I’ve only seen one cheat in the whole run. The discovery texts were also disappearing way too quickly. I feel I would have enjoyed reading them.

thank you!

Indeed, I had a hard time balancing the game with the cheating system. If you are good enough with asteroid avoiding, you may be able to complete the game effectively, but i thought the minigame was hard enough to avoid this situation 😅

The cheat spawn is 20% likely each time you generate the scientists, so you have been unlucky. However, I coul add a cheat spawn force after 3/4 times it does not.

And, you can read again the research answers by holding the mouse over the research icons (the ones with roman numbers) after research is complete. I kept notification time short since you could lose the game while reading

Thanks for feedback! Glad you enjoyed the game!

"You need money to make science." I love it. This and the titles of the researches made me smile. Also the opening music is a bop. Very well made. Good job!

Developer

Thank you! Unfortunately, that is what it is, and in science we don't have much money 😅 glad you enjoyed the game!

Very impressive, really. It was a slightly overwhelming experience for me right at the beginning but after a short while I got a hang of it. You know what, that's a pretty solid game. It's always great to see more complicated (in a good sense) games with elements from some other genres, rather than a generic "A GREEN BLOB GOES SKIP AND HOP" type platformers. I hope that other jammers and itch.io folks will not overlook your game.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

thank you so much!

I was afraid of doing this kind of game, indeed, since it can be overwhelming at the beginning. It is not immediate to play, and  people need to understand the rules and think about it a little bit (and my game is even simple for being of that genre). And, i definitely wanted to do an interactive tutorial instead than a discouraging wall text explanation at the begin, but, honestly, no time to do that... So, glad you did not give up and enjoyed the game!

Edit. And, I completely agree on the "we have enough of platformers" XD

Fun game! The discoveries offered a bunch of charm! The space shooter was an interesting way to generate income for the management side of things. Good job!

I had a good time with this game!

It certainly has quite a bit of charm and I like both the micromanagement aspects and the space-themed shooter! It is definitely an innovative mashup! Props for creativity!

The music is great and the graphics are cool!

My one caveat is that the motion controls for the spaceship are a bit too 'slippery' for me. Other than that it is a neat little game that seems pretty polished!

Glad I tried it! Game On!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

thanks for the feedback!

The ship movement is slippery since I wanted to reproduce the idea that in space there is no friction, but only inertia. So, to stop you need to apply a force opposite to the movement direction. But i understand in a video game this can be disappointing, I'll reconsider the movement after jam is over (for correctness).

Thanks again!

Possibly a solution might be to add an option for the player to control their slipperiness. I understand from a design perspective why you did this and I think it is a great stylistic choice! For me I am bad at a lot of these dodging games (even though I made one like that for this Jam) but for more experienced people having slippery controls makes sense (and will be more fun for those people) from a design perspective!

Developer

nice idea, thank you!

This game is a lot of fun! I sunk a lot of time into just getting as many cheats as possible and absolutely obliterating asteroids lol. That being said, I think the cheat system should be a little more intuitive. I had to come here and read the comments to figure out how to get them to work. Really great overall though, struck a great balance between the arcade-style asteroid shooting and the micromanagement of scientists.

I wasn't sure how to keep cheats enabled! Some times I would have infinite ammo, other times not! Was never sure if I did or not. So explanation on how to make sure they're enabled would be great! Other than that, wonderful!

Developer (1 edit)

So, cheats are enabled by how many people named "Cheat" are on the spaceship. If you have 1 you get infinite ammo, with 2 you can destroy all asteroids with right button, with 3 you can have invincibility by pressing q,  and with 4 you attract coins keeping spacebar pressed. But, when you crash, all crew members die! So you need to  find again people named Cheat. That is why you don't have infinite ammo anymore. I'll make it clearer after the jam is over, for correctness. My fault XD

Thanks a lot for your comment!

Oh that's funny! I wasn't even looking at the names in the slightest, I only looked at the stats. I'm so used to names being irrelevant!

Overall though really good game!

Developer

Yes, I was certain that many players would have not read the names, since I am the first one that does not XD. I tried to make them big and highlighted as much as I could. I also thought to change the color of the surname Cheat, but i though it was too obvious at that point. To my opinion, a cheat should not be extremely obvious, but needs some investigation from the player.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your feedback

I really enjoyed the game, its like a micromanagement clicker game but with a mini game to collect money instead of just waiting until something finishes. Amazing idea.

The wall of text at the beginning discouraged me a little bit but after playing for 2 minutes i was hooked. Unfortunately after 5 runs (where i always lost because of the money :D ) i still have not figured how to how cheat, So i had to finish the game without cheating :D (Unlocking edwin Hubble already felt like cheating tho xDD)

Having a ending screen would also be nice. I did  just put everyone i had in tho the spaceship in the end and let the space do the rest as my personal ending.

Thanks for the experience! Best game in this jam so far :)

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for your comment!

To cheat, you have to add people with the surname "Cheat" on the spaceship. This will unlock new powers. And yeah, Hubble is superpowerful XD.

There should be an ending screen indeed, maybe it's bugged? I'll double check (after the jam is over, for correctness).

One of the main issues I had with this game is balancing the gameplay, I am surprised you made it without cheats! XD I need more playtesting time to adjust all the parameters and the progression.

Thanks again!

Developer (1 edit)

Just to let you know, the ending screen is indeed bugged. Probably I broke it with the adjustments I made immediately before publishing. I thought they weren't harmful for the game. I was wrong, as usual with gamedev XD
