First time plating a rhythm game for me! And boy did I struggle. Iwas never clear on what beat I was supposed to click. Maybe make them in a different colour in the top row, that would take the guessing out of it?
But apart from utterly failing (I never got more than 31% on the first level) I really anjoyed the challenge and the MUSIC! Oh and the microbes bouncing into each other? Fab! Maybe I just enjoyed that too much to care about the rhythm ;)

Yes, I admit there is a lot of guessing involved for people who've never played the original minigame, or Rhythm Heaven at all. Sorry! 😅 The beat counter / metronome widget at the top definitely needs more love, right now it's confusing everyone (me included). Ideally, the smileys should be on top of the numbers and the beats which you're supposed to click on should be properly highlighted; I'll fix all that soon. Thank you for sharing your experience and liking the animation!

Awesome game!

  • Great main menu! Very cool to have buttons for the music, github, etc.
  • It could be fun to mix up the rhythm during a song, but it needs to be synched up.
  • There is a function getCurrentTime() you can use to get the time of the music to help synch and trigger things.
  • Cool transition wipe effect!
  • The bell sound is really rough but I'm sure you can fix that easily.
  • While you are fixing the bell sound, the sound when you click to the next message like in the tutorial is also a bit harsh. With Zzfx sometimes you need to try a few times to get a good sound. You can also just use a wave or mp3 sample if you have one. All the sounds here could use some tweaking, with a music based game you really need to try to make the sound effects jive with the music. You could even use different sounds depending on the song.

Thank you Frank for the great advice! I've implemented some of it, hopefully now the bell and tutorial sound less harsh :) Changing up the sounds depending on the song is a superb idea, I'll look into it.

Great job, the procedural graphics are an awesome touch. the gameplay is simple but I cant tell if i'm doing a good job or not until the end. Awesome job with the tutorial level and UI systems, they are really clean and well implemented. I found I can get a much higher score by just spamming the spacebar as it seems I never lost progress on anything by clicking on the wrong beat. Awesome work.

If you see bright green smileys and rainbow stars then you're perfectly on beat! Yellow stars mean good but not perfect clicks and red hoops generally indicate you're off beat. Sorry if the controls and the score system are a bit flaky, I haven't fully worked out their formulas yet. Thank you for playing and appreciate the feedback a lot!
