I never knew being a lump of coal could be so much fun X]! The mechanics were well-thought-out of and the challenging level design made it an extremely enjoyable experience.
I really enjoyed this platformer. the character definitely got me curious as to what the game was going to be about. To my amazement he was a little piece of coal! I loved that concept and it is very original!
This was a neat set of mechanics! Definitely the potential for some fun platforming sections. What you presented at the game jam here demonstrates how the mechanics work, and where you'd go from here is to start fleshing out challenges that these tools can circumvent / new types of obstacles. I found that I started "teabagging" as I walked around (rather than doing longer slides) as that would sort of passively build up my heat meter which might have not been the intention. This did have the interesting side-effect of finding me building up heat faster by doing a little dance on the open flames lol.
Definitely a good idea but the game can be a little slow. I'd say increase the movement speed and the rate wat which yopu charge your temperature. This would help with if you miss a charge jump taking a long time to build back up. Heating with friction is also a clever idea!
Thanks for the advice. When I started developing the game, the movement actually was faster than what you see now, but it was also at odds with the camera. Ideally, I would've had the camera show things further ahead of Briquette as you moved through the level. But since this was the first time I even made a camera object, I opted to have it move to keep the player dead in the center, which forced me to make my platforming challenges more separated from each other and compact, such that it required only a little movement from the camera to fully grasp the full picture of the challenge. As a result, the speed was also reduced.
As for the time it takes to charge, I also agree that it would also help. Ultimately, I want to improve Briquette's movement and challenges such that there aren't as many pace-breakers.

This was lovely. The friction to build up heat is a pretty hot mechanic, I would have loved to make something along those lines. I liked the movement and feel of the character, especially when doing that sweet H-J-H combo.
Couple of ideas that crossed my mind while playing: If there are more levels, it would be nice to have a timed mode or time-based bonuses. That way players will try to build up the charges on the move so that they can execute the combo jumps later on, rather than stopping to slowly slide around and fill up the charge bar to max each time. The fire could be an instant pick-up - or maybe it spreads across a region of the level, so that players can get heated up while still running towards the grill. Keeps the pace going. It occurred to me that wall jumps would go very well with the friction mechanic - slide on a wall, use the friction to build charge and press H to jump to the opposite wall, and repeat.
That said, it’s pretty sweet as it is, missing only a bit of environment art and sound. Great work!
Thank you. Funny enough, wall jumping and timed challenges were things I thought about while I was making this, just didn't really know how to fully implement it with what I had. That being said, I do intend to work more on the game and those will probably be included as mechanics once I do.
This was an awesome game! The friction and heating mechanics are awesome and the heat jump boost was a lot of fun. Congrats on the first game jam game, I guess we're both in the same boat there. Keep rockin on!

Excellent use of mechanics, I am really excited to see what you make out of these. My only suggestion would be to make the Fire instantly replenish your charges so the player doesn't have to wait in place. Could very much see this turn into a Super Meat Boy type of game :)
Thank you for the suggestion. I do intend to improve and expand on this game. And though I haven't played Super Meat Boy, the game definitely crossed my mind as I was making this.
The movement is amazing. I love being able to use a charge to do a speed boost and jump, using my other charges to propel even farther. I wish that the temperature bar would decrease over time, that way you would need to slide back and forth really quickly in order to build up heat (like in real life). The game seems very put-together for your first jam.
