This is a really cool concept! I was having a lot of trouble at the beginning since some of the recipes didn't make anything (like the grinder or crafting table). I was also having trouble figuring out the controls, since you didn't include instructions on how to change the tuning fork's frequency.

I'm not that musically inclined so I just made a mess of a song, but I was having mire fun with timing my clicks so an orb would bounce super high (XD). I also liked the graphics and the particles, but it also takes forever to mine anything. This is a really good start and I may come back to play again and see how you expanded on it. The online guide is neat, though maybe have a tutorial/beginner's video explaining some of the controls.

Awesome job on this! Applauses all around!

Appreciate the time you took to play and the feedback. I will certainly include some instructional tablets for these mechanics, seeing how a lot of people had trouble with them.

I've also decided to continue this project as a Steam game, seeing how people seem to have taken a keen liking to it. More so than any other game I've worked on. I'm taking notes on your feedback and work my way from there.

Gorgeous game! I'm having trouble figuring out how to play it, even with the online guide. I was able to connect two totems but right clicking them with the tone wand in one of my dark inventory boxes doesn't seem to do anything.

You are the 2nd person to have this issue. Did you place a timing bit into the totem that lit up? It won't play without a timing bit as the timing bit states how fast an energy pulse will travel. I'm actually interested in finding out what is the miscommunication here. Are you down to do a quick discord video call so  I can observe and learn what I need to clearify?

Here's my discord server, I would really appreciate  a quick call on this issue. :D

I put a timing bit into the 8 slot on both totems. Won't be able to video call, my usual laptop is having graphics issues if it overheats (which doesn't take much) and my other laptop is so slow it's almost physically painful to use. Sorry, would love to help! I'm operating on windows 10 if that's useful. I could send screenshot? Life's hectic at the moment so could take a while to get anything to you.

Ah, no problem, I did make this here video for the other user with the same issue: https://youtu.be/9Lz0BwkAqsQ  I don't know if you've seen it. You can right and left click using the tone wand, left clicking will open the totem interface, right clicking will trigger the totem. as long as you're clicking on a totem that is lit up, it should spawn an energy pulse

Hey amaris, I was having that problem earlier but I just tried it again today and it worked. Have you tried putting the timing bits in before connecting the totem? It worked for me on version 1.1.1

Developer

Yeah as far as I've tested. it worked in all the versions I'v updated. I AM interested in seeing what people are doing wrong and try to fix it up.

I've tried everything suggested and even copied what was done in the demonstration video step by step but it still doesn't seem to be working. My graphics on my good computer have seemed to calm down a bit so I've joined your discord group I'm Amaris on discord, let me know if you still want to do a video call.

Hey, I'd really like to try this game but I can't figure out some of the controls. How do you get the totem to send out a wave? Whenever I left click it with the tone wand equipped, it just opens up the menu to add timing bits.

I'll hold off on rating until I can figure out how to play :)

Developer (1 edit)

Ah, thanks for trying it out. In your inventory, there are 6 Darker slots, these are tool slots. If you place a tone wand into one of those slots and select it using any of the number 2-7 number Keys, it will activate the tone wand. Right clicking on the totem using the tone wand will trigger a wave. An important note is that Totems must come in a pair, Link one totem to another to make a line. I'll implement single totem orbs.

Yeah hmm, I've definitely got the tuning rod in my first tool slot, it's lit up because I pressed 2, I've connected my totems, they've got the same number of timing bits as you have in your demo, but nothing happens when I hit right click :/

edit: Looks like you've removed the whole debugging/testing inventory from your recent version? Imo you should keep that in, it seems like the most fun part about your game and I don't think the crafting is quite refined enough yet to support that

Developer

Oh, Haha, I actually wasn't expecting you to download the lastest build.  You're right, for the game jam game and ease of experimentation, I'll leave it in. It will be the (Special Game Jam Edition) I've actually  decided to put this game up on Steam and continue development there as a fully fledged game so all new features would go there from now on.

Developer

Oh and in regards to the energy wave. here is a video on how to do it: https://youtu.be/9Lz0BwkAqsQ Let me know what it is that I didn't explain properly, I'm interested in making this easier to grasp.

Developer

Thanks for checking it out. A major part of this game submission is an online play guide, I have yet to upload it today. Then you'll get a full set of ingredients and crafting recipes.

Well i wil wait for it then. Cant wait.

Developer

Hey, thanks for waiting. I've finished up the  guide: let me know if there's anything else you can't figure out and I'll see about adding it as well. https://www.eisenstadtstudio.com/projects/song_of_a_spirit/

First of all , really like the website design , and thanks for warn me , i will gladly play it again.

Developer

Thank you, thank you :D Appreciate your audience.

So i played it again ,no doubt it was better than the first run cus this time i actually could advance, some small critic , i would take like half of the time  "mining" it takes so much time when the real propose of the game is making a music , taking that , loved the art of the materials and small animations.

If you feel like it also check my team game : https://itch.io/jam/jamcraft3/rate/441360

Developer(+1)

Will do and yes. I'm looking into shortening mining  time. There's a whole survival and story counterpart that I have yet to implement that would tie it all together in a bit better way. For the time of the Jam, however I only got the core mechanics in. Thank you for the feedback.
