Use BFXR ;) Or record some noise and edit using Audacity.

What do you mean? I'm currently doing my SFX using those tips.
What kind of sound design are you going for? You can record with your phone and use Audacity for post, or you can use more synth-like or midi instruments for retro-sounding designs.
