Nice little game! Congratulations for not using an engine!

I think it fits the theme perfectly.

Good job.

Great surprise as concept, it is simple but efficient!

Btw well done for doing a game with a library instead of an engine, it is impressive!

Overall good job!

Things I liked:

  • You put the effort into using a library instead of an engine.  I'm not sure how comfortable you are with SFML, but I applaud the attempt. I haven't used SFML, but I've played with Pygame (a wrapper around SDL) and it takes a bit of time to get even the most basic functionality working the way you want it to.
  • You kept the game small and it adhered to the jam rules.
  • The rotation of the room was really cool looking

Suggestions

  • Generally, you should make sure your debug window isn't printing in release. To be honest, I don't think I commented out my print statements. I reaaaaally need to look and see if any of my inappropriate comments are printing :O
  • On my screen, the game is clipped at the bottom, so if there were any door at the bottom, I wouldn't know. So next time work on making sure its visible on all sized screens.
  • While I love the rotation of the screen, the text being rotated was not ideal. I don't think a lot of players want to try and read something backwards, especially when they don't control the next sequence of dialogue.

These are just things to keep in mind in the future. Congrats on submitting your game!

I'm in a scene where two squares moves and rotates...

You sure you unzipped correctly? The pngs must be missing. Also make sure you didn't move any of the folders.

Also does console say anything?

I'm a Linux user, so I use PlayOnLinux, maybe this is the cause :(

Developer

I must say, this was only tested on windows 10 and windows 7, so this could be the issue.

Nice concept but just a tad too short. I really like the sound effects when the text was coming out. It actually sounded really menacing!

Btw if you're really into optimizing game size, there's a game jam in August where you have to make a javascript game in under 13kb. That might be right up your alley.

Developer

Wow, that really sounds intriguing! I am for sure going to check that out! Thanks.

Really cool, I like that you went engineless too, badass!

That was really nice and interesting, for a game jam game you rocked it with this one, Good  job :D

Hi,

this game is pretty good. What makes it better is that it's 1 mb, not using an engine seems to be really useful sometimes. The animations were, although quite simple, fit for the job, just like the art-style (especially knowing you're limited by a color palette of 2 colors). I had to play it 3 times to realize that nothing was going to change, but I was pleased :) As another person suggested, you could always try to expand the game a bit more, like the guy in the room just attacking you, but with the benefit of not needing to worry about size. Being made by one person, I think this project was a success!

Keep up the good work!

Well I wished I could keep it under 100kbs, but I didn't have time to optimise, ultimately that's the challange for the next jam I guess xD. Also it requires 120mb ram xd, maybe take it down to 10mbs next time? Either way, thank you for playing!

I think if you take this further, you could make something really neat here. Not that this isn't neat already, just a lil' tiny right now! But I really enjoyed it!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for your feedback! The code for it is really just mish-mash... so quite impossible to expand on that xD. Im glad you enjoyed it tho.

Just a quick comment (for curious people):

This game was made without using any game engine!

I just used the SFML library.

Also the only thing I didn't do is the font.

So... I can legitimately say that this game purly contains my soul.

you should use sf::view when you scale the window the player scales and game scales it looks not good so you can use it btw the game is a gret loop XDD

This game was really funny. I actually went around and around and around trying to see if he would say anything different, but alas "Loop".

Good job!

Thank you for playing! But you're right, there isn't anything else to explore... or is there?
