  • Typing: nobody likes it, causes Finger Problems, wears out keyboards.  But if ya want people to see your incredibly smart, very cool opinions, especially when it comes to Online Game Criticisms, ya gotta do it. So I always feel excited to play typing games that help dilute the tedium of punching da letter buttons and make typing fun, and I'm happy to say Harold Krell's Super Scream Fighter hits that mark.  It even focuses on the most useful of phrases for internet users, such as 'SHARTS' and 'BANANA SLAMMER.'

    Krell's distinctive graphics mix the best of mspaint and absurd, gross cartoony visuals, which does a great job selling the intense, curse-based fighting action.  There's an impressive number of characters, attacks, backgrounds, and their Krell-ish style is cohesive and entertaining throughout.  Seeing the hit reactions, especially to super moves, is a pleasure!  I think my one complaint with visuals (which also ties into gameplay) is that the actual curses themselves feel a little too visually similar, generally one long stream of words that go across the screen.  If they were a little more themed, maybe including visuals of what they describe with a few frames of animation, I think that'd add a lot to both attack hitbox variety and character differentiation.  

    The audio is fantastic, each music track manages to capture the feel of Street Fighter's bgms while putting a fun spin on 'em.  Bug's theme cracks me up, ya did a particularly good job at making a listenable but also really entertaining track with it! The over the top voice acting helps make each attack feel nicely impactful, adding a lot of characterization to each fighter.  Just some real good grunts going down here, real good grunts.

    While I thought the implementation of input recognition for typing worked surprisingly well, allowing for neat combos as letters go towards any word that can currently use it, Super Scream Fighter is a bit unwieldy as it has you using the arrow keys for movement as well as typing on all letters.  This might make hunt and peckers particularly strong, but as a quick typer I personally just avoided all movement and slammed words out. Honestly this is a tricky control situation to deal with, so I'm not really sure of an ideal way of handling that'd be any better than what ya went with.  But it might be interesting to see movements also be words like left right jump, or maybe use number keys (since they're a little more accessible from homerow) so 1-4 is left, 8-= is right, and 5-7 is jump

    I do think there's room here for expansion, one of the big things I noticed when I played each character was that I'd usually find a phrase (and possibly one or two combo words) and type them repeatedly until I won the round.  I'd really like to see each type of attack have a few phrase variations within them, so the typing doesn't get as repetitive and so-far-untyped phrases fill in more and more making them more enticing.

    But ya did an excellent realizing this concept and making it immediately entertaining with a nice amount of character variety. The Krell-Meister does it again!!

For newbies, consider it to be a crraaazyy new sequel in the Street Fighter franchise. For jammer veterans, consider it a spiritual sequel to a past jam game ;)

Pros:
  • Combat mechanics are well executed and feel like a full system
  • Trademark Krell humour, visuals and audio
  • Characters are varied and play very differently

  • Random behaviour of the CPU can be frustratingly effective

When I wrote this I assumed this was a sequel to Slam Fighter 2 by Dogpit but I just read this page and so I guess it's not? It was my impression going into it, though I'm not sure anymore. Either way, it's a cool idea. My first playthrough was as Hamburger Nash and at times it got frustrating fighting against Bug and Johnny Cumnuttly where Bug was so strong it only took two or three hits to die and Johnny shot out so many attacks that it was difficult to get anything out myself, but eventually I learned to get around it and continued to enjoy this gem. The cover of Material Girl was really nicely done, and the outro cutscenes were silly and fun. The mechanics were also really well shown, transparent in their build-up so that I knew where I was in my attacks and when the CPU was ready to throw some nasty garbage at all times. Really cool, Krell!

The game-play, graphics and sound are all on-point for the theme. The art is kind of crude, yeah, but it has its own charm to it and bug's face is brilliant. Great sense of humor throughout the game!

Only real suggestion I have is the game's balance is a little bit out of whack, with Bug being hilariously overpowered compared to some of the other fighters (though him vs the girl is a fun fight of carefully timing those insults to hit her as she's coming down from the air).

The hit-boxes on the attacks also felt strangely inconsistent. Like sometimes a full-on hit would do variable amounts of damage. At first I thought it was punishment for using the same insult too many times but I don't think that's the case? Something wierd might be happening with collisions, not sure.

I love how the audio is filtered to directly reference voiced lines in old timey fighting games. I think there's a very minor balance issue where Bug is by far the least playable character - he's a bit more frustrating and less fun than, say, typing PEEPEEPOOPOO. Overall an incredibly fun idea that makes me wish it was a full fledged fighting game with a full roster of ~20 characters because all in all arbitrary key combos are no better than typing out "shart", and you could get incredibly creative with the different swears.

Soooo funny. This concept is so original and interesting. Where do you come up with these jam game ideas from? Just typing out all the "swears" was cracking me up (Banana slammer was my BNB). The art style is exactly what it's trying to be, in a style I can only call "MS Paint style" but in a good way. All the references to chemical castration were hilarious... And, actually, I really liked the difficulty curve. I remember coming to level 3 at first and going "What the hell, I do no damage this guy is insane" and having to learn and adapt to the game. So kudos to that. Really interesting and fun game!
