The aesthetic and music for this game are excellent. I felt like the vibe was perfect and I can really see what you guys are going for. I really like the random generation concept as well. I think the aiming just needs some work and the movement as well perhaps. Additionally some variation in the world would be super cool, but it is already looking awesome! Keep up the great work!

Cool game. I feel like you guys have made some nice progress so far. Here are the answers to your questions:

How "random" does each version of the randomly generated world feel?
Honestly, not that random. Don't get me wrong, the fact that you guys implemented random world generation at all is awesome. However, I don't feel like there's enough unique landmarks to make it really feel special. The best way I can describe it is if you made a Minecraft world, but only with the Forest biome and nothing else. Yes, technically it's random, but it's all the same so nothing generated really feels too unique. The only unique thing I found was a tower with some boxes.

Does the world present a challenge to navigate or explore?
The world wasn't too challenging to explore. It's pretty easy to get around. The only obstacle I really encountered was finding a place to cross the river.

Does the Blood Bear feel challenging to fight, especially the first time?
For me, not really. I killed it on my first play through. I just circled it and spammed arrows until it died. I think it would be cooler if it charged at you and you had to sidestep it in order to not take damage, or something along those lines.

Do the theme and genera of the game match the art presented?
I think the theming is great. The forest-y pixel art with the medieval music. It all matches pretty well.

Did combat feel good and enjoyable? Did the AI feel "intelligent"?
Combat felt alright. Obviously there's just one attack so far, so it's very simple. I know you're planning on adding a melee attack, and I feel like that will add a lot more depth and variety to the combat. The only weird thing I noticed is that whenever I hit an animal (rabbit or bear), the fire rate of my bow seemed to be way higher than if I missed. I'm assuming this is because the game waits for the current arrow to despawn before letting the player fire another, and you make the arrow despawn faster by hitting an animal. I'd maybe suggest making it a static timer instead, so that firing arrows feels more consistent whether you hit an animal or not.

Did you encounter errors while playing? If so what were they?
I guess the only two "bugs" I noticed are the arrows appearing sideways, and the shooting animation playing after the arrow has already been fired. But you probably know about that already. Also you're taken to the same "Game Over" screen whether you kill the bear or not, which makes me feel like I always lost.

Cute game! I love the art. I'm not sure what you all have planned to do before the final submission, but it would be great if there was more variety of animals, killing the bunnies makes me feel bad :(. Also it would be great if there was loot or just coins or something.

Hi The King's Forest Team,

The random generation of the game was really well done, there was a lot of variation within every time I replayed the game! The world was a little challenging to navigate, especially because I had forgotten to use the hunter's call, but I'd say the challenge is fitting for this game! The blood bear did feel challenging fighting him for the first time, I ended up running away to regain health a few times before finally defeating him. The theme of the game did match the art style. The combat was fun, I had a lot of fun running around hunting the rabbits. I did not encounter any errors or glitches well playing the game. Good job and good luck!

The game was fun, and I enjoyed the background music. However, I found the playing area to be too large, which made it difficult to find the bear. Despite that, I got a thrill when the bear started chasing me. I also noticed there was no winning screen—I defeated the bear but got a game over screen instead.

Great job, I really like the game over music. The gameplay feels pretty snappy but I was confused about how the Hunter's Call worked. The only other criticism I have is that if the bear get up against a wall it becomes really easy to just spam him down. I liked the way the random generation is working the levels feel good and there isn't too much clutter that would be frustrating. I think the time to shoot new arrows could be a bit longer to increase the challenge. Hunting rabbits is really fun though I like how their move speed is balanced.

How "random" does each version of the randomly generated world feel?

I think you all did great with the random world generation, I can clearly see all the time and effort you put into it coming through. I hope in the future there will be more reasons to venture out and explore the map more

Does the world present a challenge to navigate or explore?

No, the trees and other obstacles were spaced out plenty enough to freely explore the map, even looking for the bridge to cross the river was nice and easy.

Does the Blood Bear feel challenging to fight, especially the first time?

No, especially because the player can spam shooting the bow when the mouse cursor is over enemies the bear and rabbits go down fairly easily. I would definitely recommend increasing the bear's speed or giving it some other mechanics like a charge attack to make the fight more dynamic.

Do the theme and genera of the game match the art presented?

Yes, thematically the whole game fits together quite well, nothing feels out of place.

Did combat feel good and enjoyable? Did the AI feel "intelligent"?

The combat feels a bit too basic, it would be nice to see something like a charge shot mechanic for the bow, where you could hold down the shoot button to charge up a more powerful shot. The enemies felt quite good actually, the rabbits roam the world as one would expect and the bear chases down the player as expected, I did not see any pathing issues.

Did you encounter errors while playing? If so what were they?

Some weird graphical effects when walking around one of the ponds of water, looked like the grid lines of the tiles were showing, other than that I'm not sure if it is intended for the player to be able to fire the bow super quickly when the cursor is over an enemy.

Other comments

This looks like a great foundation to work on, if you can moving forward give the player more dynamics to work with or otherwise add more enemies to the world this seems very enjoyable.

I thought the game had an interesting concept, I especially like the music you guys added. the aspect where you had to kill the bunnies to get health made hunting for the bear fun. The boss fight did feel easy, I would suggest either making the player slightly slower or the bear faster. You could also give the bear some type of special attack that hinders the player. I also didn't know what the key binds where for the hunter call ability, so it took me longer to find the bear. Overall I had a blast playing your game and can't wait for future updates.

How "random" does each version of the randomly generated world feel?

The random generation feels great. Makes the game really replayable with a difference experience each time.
Does the world present a challenge to navigate or explore?

It does not.  I like the random generation and the feel of the map.

Does the Blood Bear feel challenging to fight, especially the first-time?

If I am being honest, it felt pretty easy, the player can stand at a distance and spam shots to kill the bear. I do like the if you get hit by the bear it does a lot of damage. Maybe add a charge attack for the bear?
Do the theme and genera of the game match the art presented?

Yes, I also really liked the music that you all used. Maybe turn it down a little or add a adjustable bar to change volume of music?
Did combat feel good and enjoyable? Did the AI feel "intelligent"?

Yes, the combat feels good. I also enjoyed how you must kill the rabbits to heal up.

Did you encounter errors while playing? If so, what were they?
A small error that I saw was sometimes during random generation trees would spawn like almost on top of each other.  Is the arrow asset shooting out the wrong way. I think the image needs to be turned horizontal.

Suggestions:

  • Volume bar for music (maybe turn down music a little)
  • Charge attack for bear?
  • Controls / How to (show the players which keys to use in-game)
