Blocklock City rated Pikuniku

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

I love Pikuniku.  The flat art visual style reminds me of the Eyezmaze games, very cute and pleasant, and while the story and characters are very simple it always went a little bit further than I expected it to, which kept me engaged.  It's easy to play and pretty short, good if you were worried about it overstaying its welcome, but bad if you wanted to spend more time and do more things in Pikuniku's silly little world.

Things I docked a star for are the music (fits the visual style and tone of the game, but only ever "adequate") and the reliance on precision kicking at some points, a movement that the player has very little control over besides the direction you face, and even that isn't telegraphed at all because Piku always faces forward unless he's looking at something.  It's not a problem when you're just goofing around or when what you need to do is basically "move object to the other side of the floor", but there are times with Ernie and especially Baskick that are more a matter of luck that the controls happen work the way you need them to than of your skill at using them, which is a out-of-place piece of frustration in an otherwise straightforward game.  I was concerned early on that the game would be more and more reliant on precision kicking as I went, but thankfully that did not happen.  I also don't like that it's possible for two trophies to become unobtainable if you don't get them the first time through an area.

Outside of those things, though, I really enjoyed Pikuniku.  It's fun to just move around, watch stuff happen, and listen to the sounds things make.  I'd play this even if was just a "toy" and not a "game", but the fact that it IS a game is obviously a big bonus.
