After playing through TORNUKTU, I knew I wanted to check out more from Jonny's Games' catalog. With it being pretty popular, it felt like a perfect choice, and I wasn't wrong. This was so much fun and legitimately scary at the same time.
One thing this game really excels at is its atmosphere and its ability to build tension. Everything starts peacefully and cheerfully as your character comes across the titular slide in the middle of the woods. Nothing about it seems off from a simple view of it (except for the fact that it's in the middle of nowhere). So, the only thing you can do is slide down it. But, as you progress and ride down the slide more and more, the world around you starts to change. The chirps of birds disappear, the sky becomes dark, and the environment around you starts to feel more unsettling. Sometimes you'll hear noises around you, either from the woods or potentially from the slide itself. All the vibes shift, and it's done exceptionally well.
While there isn't a big story, there are little bits and pieces of backstory/lore, like a newspaper clipping talking of locals going missing and the slide eventually taking us to another dimension, unlike our own, with what appears to be a pyramid reminiscent of those found throughout Mesoamerica. It's all very surreal but cool and creepy. The dimension even has its own resident, which scared me when I saw it. The people disappearing via the slide reminds me of SCP-1562, also known as The Slide. I do wonder if the developer took some inspiration from it. In addition, I adore how, similar to TORNUKTU, the PS1 art style is in use for the overall graphics.
Without spoiling too much, Slide in the Woods is a fantastic horror game that can be played in one sitting and really put me on edge the further I progressed. It felt claustrophobic in some parts and sent chills through my body in others. I highly recommend this game and think it's a stellar indie horror gem.
