Hostage has a good concept and I like the gritty atmosphere. I found the game to be to much like a hidden object game though. Being that the game is made to be like low quality VHS footage it is hard to see many things that you are supposed to click on. I ended up just clicking around randomly sometimes. I had an idea about what the game wanted from me but just had trouble seeing things. The game is also very linear and having some choice thrown in would have been a nice touch. Having any semblance of a story would have been another nice thing to have. I can gather it was a very low budget the group had to work with so kudos for doing what they could.
I played Hostage on Linux. It never crashed and I didn't notice any bugs or issues. There is only one graphics setting and a resolution option. The game has no save system and no menu. Once done I had to alt-F4 to exit the game. Performance was fine even on Intel onboard graphics.
Game Engine: Unity
Graphics API: OpenGL
Disk Space Used: 415 MB
Graphics Settings Used: Best, 2560x1440
CPU Usage: 5-7 %
System RAM Usage: 2.4-2.8 GB
Hostage does some things well but is far from perfect. The game is free but at the same time there are a lot of good free games out there. If anything it made me interested in the what the developers can do with a larger budget. I finished the game in eight minutes.
