AlexiusScholius rated The Vermander Curse

A downloadable game for Windows.

It is amazing.

The controls might feel a bit junky, but it might actually add to the feeling of empathy for the characters: after all, we play for a robust lady who is the only doctor at the hospital and a nurse who has just moved into the town, so I believe both characters can be rightfully tired and nervous.

The mechanics are curious and they work very well, so the game works perfectly. One thing I feel I want to point out and stress is the fact the game has only two, maybe three real jumpscare moments (by that I mean "moments when the game unexpectedly frightens you"), and they both do not utilize cheap loud noise to frighten you. The evil spirit/ghost/hallucination the player may see out of the window or peeking from behind the corner stays silent and does not really provide any unfair threat to the player, but plays the role of a jumpscare very well. As for the third "jumpscare", it happens during the tutorial, when Morton suddenly greets you as you open the door to say about the phone call.

Finally, the story is just great and wholesome, if the player does everything correctly and makes sure all the patients (who are all amazing characters too, by the way) and medics survive until dawn, we get a very happy ending where every character gets good treatment: the protagonists, the support character, the villain, even the evil spirit who was enslaved to the family of Vermanders.

And it is all that matters, I believe. Beautiful game.
