There no special genes or seed drop is there reason? White out in end of snow/winter season I find that kind strange.  You don't have any mudslide or disasters in your game to cause alarm it almost too stable like seedling has eden environment where there no event where sapling isn't grabbed by animals, animal attack happens by stupid deer or occassional wild creature feasting should be interesting. Gopher, deer, and badgers are just plain mean to saplings.
