Zaleramancer rated DEVOTO

A downloadable comic.

How can I describe Devoto?

It was deeply unappreciated in its time, because it is a standout work of art. It's funny, dramatic and vivid. It experiments- it has such dynamism with the framing of panels and such dramatic use of color.

There is a part of this particular book that has always left me breathless, because it combines an incredibly vibrant color palette with incredibly poetic dialogue.

Devoto is a comic about romance. It's an erotic comic where dudes have sex! It's a beautiful comic that engages with characters who are angels and demons from an inhuman culture, who believe in inhuman things. The characters are not just here to tell a story to arouse, they're here to discuss philosophy.

There are lines from this comic that resonated with me them, and still strike me with their beauty. There is a part of this book where an angel asks a demon if he regrets their relationship, which led directly to the demon's fall from grace.

And the demon says this:

Your presence is the death of zealots, for you are the antipode of joy and the rejection of all hope.

But even you, who can wither primeval bristlecone and transient mayfly with an equal touch- even you, with your talons against my palm-

Have no power to make me regret.

When I was a teenager, I found Devoto when it was a webcomic in progress. I wasn't looking for something of profound, poetic beauty. I was looking for pornography, because I was a queer teenager and webcomics were (and still are) a bustling medium in that particular area.

My feelings were so hard to articulate then, it was so difficult for me to say what I felt about this comic, or why. I wish I could have, but we cannot change the ways things were.

So let me say this: Devoto is a beautiful, very hot comic about people who think themselves utterly beyond deserving salvation, but who are nevertheless saved from pain by the redeeming power of love.

It's a comic about people with very human feelings and problems and relationships and flaws, who meet and mix with people with vast and grand and ancient pain born from a culture older than our world.
