An Update on Stairfall

Hi all.

As some of you know, back in 2018 The Stairfall Institute officially closed down having finally run out of money and all the staff (all one of them) needing to get a job.

Since then it's been difficult to keep making games, although there have been attempts.

But worst of all, really, has been missing Yorkshire Gubbins Episode 2. There have been a few attempts made to continue this work in the last five years, but nothing was successful.

There's still nothing official to announce. BUT, I can say, that a third and final attempt is currently in progress. Rotas and schedules have been drawn up to make progress each and every day. Stories have been written. Puzzles have been designed. A world has been wireframed. It's the most promising progress since the studio closed.

I just want to say that I'm doing my best here. I'm doing everything I can think of to make sure this is steady, sustainable development practices that can co-exist with having a full time job. I have no other creative projects to compete with this one singular task, and speaking personally getting this Episode 2 monkey off my back is going to be the single greatest act of self-care imaginable.

In October 2023, that's four months from now, marking the 6th Anniversary of the launch of Yorkshire Gubbins on Steam, I will make an accouncement. That announcement is going to be either "New Episode Available Today!", or "New Episode coming in X weeks" or "Yorkshire Gubbins is Permanently Abandoned Forever, Sorry, Please Forgive me, I've Tried Literally Everything But I'm No Longer Capable Of Doing It".

I hope it's good news. I really do.

Thank for all for appreciating my work over the years. It really does mean so much. And thank you for tolerating my broken promises and failures over that time too. I could blame the untreated ADHD. I could blame my own lack of self-awareness. I could blame my job. I could blame the other creative outlets I've had. Maybe it's all of those things, but either way I've let people down by not being honest with myself about my own capabilities, about what I could realistically achieve. This current plan? I think it's realistic. I think it's achievable. I think I can keep this going for 6 months, at least. But I've been wrong before.

Please, if you can, wish me luck.

Good luck!

Yorkshire Gubbins was an amazing experience when I played through it a couple of months ago. I really hope you're able to make something that makes you happy.

thank you, I appreciate you saying that :)

WAIT HOW DID IT TAKE UNTIL NOW FOR ME TO NOTICE YOUR PROFILE GIF IS OF THE 13TH DOCTOR

That is amazing

 😉

I 100% relate to this, I've had a similar hiatus from creative projects due to LIFE. It's inspiring to read this and I really hope you can push through and just get it done. I loved Yorkshire Gubbins way back in the day and will keep an eye out. You got this!

thank you sam!

First of all, I’m glad to hear you’re doing well and that you feel confident in how this fresh take on the project is going.

Second of all, there’s no need to apologize: stuff happens in life and seemingly straightforward plans and goals can get derailed very quickly for a variety of reasons.  I do appreciate your honesty about the game’s progress and what you plan to do next for the “Yorkshire Gubbins” project.

Even if it doesn’t pan out, I still love what you’ve done with this wacky world you’ve created, especially “Aye Fair Lady” which is honestly one of my favourite point-&-click adventure games.  I wish you all the best, including lots of luck, on this project and any others you have in the future.

Aghgh thank you. In a way I sort of wish I'd never made Aye Fair Lady  😬. I genuinely felt like it was impossible to make anything better, and I didn't want to make anything worse, obviously. So, all I can say is, in order to make progress I'm not going to be able to compare them. I think this new episode just needs to exist because it does, and that's how I can make finally make progress.

Trying to just focus on how fortunate I am that I made something that people actually like at all, you know?

Speaking as an internet rando, it was a wonderful thing you made, and I'm extremely happy it exists in the world. Hopeful that there will be more Gubbins but hope that happiness

Extremely excited and wishing you the very best of luck and health <3

Thank you Pyro. I really hope this works.

Good luck! 💜

Thank you, my friend :)

This is incredibly exciting to me! Big Gubbins fan, I never stopped believing you will pull through eventually.

Thank you for saying that. I really hope I have good news for you soon :)
