Does this game have potential?

Hello.

I'm Just a 16 year old game developer wannabe or whatever. I am currently working on a game called "Hellashapes" which is an infinite rougelite bullet-hell platform 2d game where you teleported to a mysterious world that expands as you progress and must fight to survive and become more stronger. I have been making this game for a month but as I progress developing this game, I seem to have loss my passion, determination and motivation for this game. Even visualizing the end product of this feels trashy at my perspective and started think of deleting this project.

I feel like that this game will not stand out even for a tiny amount of viewers and may likely to be a waste of time just to see a bit of gameplay. before deciding the destination of my project. I would like to ask for you feedback about your first impression about the early development of the game.

I also posted a devlog on youtube for more trashy content:

let me know what you think if I should delete my project , or it has potential.

This is a fantastic game idea with a great gimmick, I think continuing work on it is worth it. The graphics even look relatively polished. If I had anything to criticize, though:

  • The gameplay is pretty slow, so over time it can get boring. Perhaps make enemies smarter/faster over time?
  • I’m pretty patient, so I watched the whole video. If you want to catch the majority’s attention, though, it needs more eye candy. Some more visuals in the background than just slowly floating rectangles would be nice.

Those are my two cents, good luck with your project.

thank you. can i ask you. how can give the game more appealing at first glance?

More vibrance, probably; a little vibration on some events, also. Really just anything to not make it so “static”.

thank you for your feedback

The game seems really fun. If you were to add some sort of way to have the path or wtvr split, then maybe the map could be larger. I think what could be fun is playing around with the idea of local multiplayer, as I see this possibly being a party game.

thanks for your feed back.  my plan is making the map larger is to generate box(what the platform is made of)/ platform ad you progress.

Hi ShadowPeterX,

Based on your post, I assume this is one of your first projects, since you mention you want to be a game dev. Based on that I have some feedback for you:

  • Never call one of your creations trash. You are significantly undervaluing your work. If you see any of the games I made when I was 16, you would call your game a complete masterpiece.

  • The way you describe the game, it sounds like it has quite the chunky scope, especially for a new dev. If you are not having fun, it will destroy your motivation. Not just on this game, but maybe in game dev in general. If you are indeed burnt out on this project, I would suggest to “wrap things up”, make some final changes and polish, and publish the game for what it is. You are 16, making a game like this will be AMAZING experience for your future. Start a new project, with a smaller scope, and work yourself up slowly. As you get more experience, you will learn how to organise a project, so that most of its parts are automated. This will allow you to make games with bigger scale, without it feeling any more complicated than smaller ones.

  • Assuming you want to be a game dev because you like it, especially at this age, you shouldn’t be thinking “Will people like this? Otherwise I’m not even gonna try”. There have been numerous times when I was making a game, and thought it would flop, only to see users enjoy it, and times where I’ve worked on something that I thought would be a success and did nothing. Make something that you like, and slowly you will build the game design experience to make things more and more fun.

  • Don’t be too hard on yourself, you are young and at the perfect age to earn experience. The more games you make, the more experience you will earn. This includes game that you decide not to publish at the end.

  • I strictly advice against deleting a project. It doesn’t matter how small it is, or how much you don’t like it. In 10 years from now you will be looking at this project and be like “This is how it all started”.

  • You do not “want to be a game developer”, you are a game developer, since you develop games :)

This is my advice as a game dev working in the industry full time. I’ve met people that haven’t touched code until they were 18 and went to college, and they’ve made great game devs. You are on the right path, and doing great.

I truly appreciate your feedback.  also I started gamedev at 14 so I have almost 2 years of game dev experience. I am starting to make a game at larger scale for the effort of my 2 year game dev experience. The game  has lack of content because the first month was mostly on back end stuff like ground pathfinding, flexible and reusable code, random world generation, etc.

your feedback still gives me motivation to finish my project. Thank you very much.
